Coincidence? Murder Rate Fell Over 6% After Bruen Decision

The FBI’s annual crime report, released Monday, found that violent crime in the U.S. last year decreased while property crime is on the rise. Overall, violent crime dropped 1.7 percent, including a 6.1 percent decrease in murder and non-negligent manslaughter. 

The murder rate in the U.S. continues to fall after it jumped nearly 30 percent during the pandemic in 2020. In 2022, the rate was 6.3 homicide offenses per 100,000 people. This is down from the 2021 rate of 6.8 homicides per 100,000 people.

In Detroit Citizens Shoot Back, Murder At 50 yr Low

Detroit’s population in 2018 was listed as 672,662. The number of murders in Detroit were listed as 261. This equates to a homicide rate of 38.8 per 100,000 population. It is the second highest city in the nation. However, the number of murders are considerably lower than they were in 2012, just before Chief Craig took over. The numbers of murders are the lowest in 50 years. The population of Detroit has dropped; thus the rate of murders is still high. The rate was 55.2 per 100,000 in 2012. In 2012, the interim police chief, Chester Logan, blamed the homicide rate on guns.

Gun Ownership Icreases As Murder Rate Drops

“firearm-related murder and non-negligent homicide” rate was 6.6 per 100,000 Americans in 1993. Following the exponential growth in the number of guns, that rate fell to 3.6 per 100,000 in 2000.
