Shootings: Perception vs Reality

From Mises.org:

And when it comes to things like homicides, there is no evidence that things are getting worse. It is indeed true that things aren’t like they were “when we were kids,” but that’s a good thing. There were far more homicides in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s than there are today. Things were even worse than that during the 1970s. In fact, the homicide rate in the US was cut in half between 1991 and 2014. And while the homicide rate has inched up over the past two years, it is nowhere near where it was “when we were kids.”

Arizona beheading raises fears of drug violence

CHANDLER, Ariz. – The gruesome case of a man who was stabbed and beheaded in a suburban Phoenix apartment has police investigating whether the killing is potentially the most extreme example of Mexican drug cartel violence spilling over the border.

Martin Alejandro Cota-Monroy’s body was found Oct. 10 in a Chandler apartment — his severed head a couple feet away. One man suspected in the killing has been arrested, and a manhunt is under way for three others.

Small-town mayor stoned to death in western Mexico

“MORELIA, Mexico (AP) – A small-town mayor and an aide were found stoned to death Monday in a drug-plagued western state, the fifth city leader to be slain in Mexico since mid-August.

Michoacan state Attorney General Jesus Montejano said the bodies of Tancitaro Mayor Gustavo Sanchez and city adviser Rafael Equihua were discovered in a pickup truck abandoned on a dirt road near the city of Uruapan.

Montejano’s spokesman, Jonathan Arredondo, said initially that the victims were hacked to death with a machete, but the attorney general said they were killed with stones.”

Texas: Falcon Lake Killing Blamed on Blunder by Cartel lower-level Operatives

Members of the Mexican military search for David Hartley's body in Falcon Lake.

“BROWNSVILLE — A global intelligence company Wednesday said the death of U.S. citizen David Michael Hartley on Falcon Lake was a case of mistaken identity in a turf war between rival drug cartels.

Hartley, who was shot during a Sept. 30 sightseeing trip to the Mexican side of the binational reservoir, was shot by Zeta cartel enforcers because he was mistaken for a spy of the rival Gulf Cartel, according to the report by STRATFOR, and Austin-based think tank specializing in intelligence and international issues.

The report goes on to say Hartley’s body likely was destroyed as Los Zetas went into “damage control” mode and that the lower-level operatives responsible for the unauthorized strike against him now are on the Zetas’ hit list.”

The lead Mexican investigator in his case has been beheaded Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1319997/Severed-head-Mexican-police-officer-Rolando-Armando-Flores-Villegas.html?ito=feeds-newsxml#ixzz12LuGglMR

Lead Mexican investigator Rolando Armando Flores Villegas was hunting for the men who killed a U.S. citizen, a Texas man who was jet-skiing on Falcon Lake, in Texas.

The Investigator’s decapitation is a ‘message to White House’: Mexican drug cartels are declaring that the U.S. ‘no longer controls border’.

“The lead Mexican investigator hunting for an American man who disappeared after he and his wife were ambushed on Falcon Lake has been beheaded, a Texas lawmaker claimed today.

The severed head of Rolando Armando Flores Villegas was delivered to the Mexican military in a suitcase, Aaron Pena said today.

His wife Tiffany has told police she and her husband were ambushed by pirates while jet-skiing on the popular lake on September 30.

They shot her husband in the head, she claimed. She tried to rescue him but was forced to abandon his body when the pirates opened fire at her.

His body still has not been found.”

Ciudad Juárez, Mexico: They Poured Gasoline on Him and Lit a Match

They Took Him Out of the Vehicle, Poured Gasoline on Him, and Lit a Match

http://www.oem.com.mx/elmexicano/notas/n1762169.htm

While more than 2,030 homicides have taken place in Ciudad Juarez during this year, the state attorney general prosecutors have only been able to find suspects in 67 of those cases, that is, one in every hundred. This is seen as a motivating factor for others to commit crimes, since the local perception is that killing has no consequences here.

Jesus Camarillo, a law professor at the University of Ciudad Juarez, said in an interview that, “In civilized societies, every conflict must be resolved by a third party, which is the State, now practically excluded, and then the conflict is resolved by private vengeance, and that is what we see presently: a state of barbarism, because the state’s presence is totally excluded, since there is no one to challenge crimes, no one to investigate them.”

Violence Rampant in Ciuadad Juarez

Three bodies found among the trash along a road in "Curvas del Perico" executed with multiple gunshots to the head.

“Around-the-clock executions, routine kidnappings, burnings of rural homes, hangings of murder victims from overpasses, scatterings of body parts on public streets, a car bomb, and threats of more violence have all put Ciudad Juarez and the state of Chihuahua on extreme edge.

The violence boils as the administration of Chihuahua Governor Jose Reyes Baeza, state legislature and municipal governments enter their last months in office and prepare to hand over political leadership to others from the same Institutional Revolutionary Party.”
