The AR As A Hunting Rifle

From Guns.com:

As the AR design has reached maturity, large-frame and small-frame rifles have become prevalent. This means that gun owners and hunters have many more options to choose from. Small frame AR’s run traditional cartridges like the .223/5.56, which have always been a good choice for hunting small game and varmints.

If bigger game is on your list, then a large-frame AR chambered in something like 6.5 CM or .308 Winchester would be an excellent option. There are even a few companies out there making XL-framed AR-style rifles that are chambered in magnum cartridges, making nearly any North American animal potential prey. All this while maintaining the same modularity and manual of arms common to the AR-style rifle. This extremely adaptive nature of the AR continues to open doors for its use in hunting purposes.

5.7 Has Been Standardized By NATO

From American Rifleman:

The FN-designed 5.7×28 mm caliber has been officially standardized by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Its development began in the late 1980s when, “Jean-Paul Denis and Marc Neuforge, designers at FN Herstal, started from scratch to design a new cartridge and then a platform to launch it,” according to Dave Campbell’s story for American Rifleman.

ATF Backs Down On Pistol Braces

From Guns.com:

Five days after the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives posted the 15-page notice and request for comments in the Federal Register, igniting a firestorm of criticism, the agency backpedaled and withdrew it. The action mimicked the rapid reversal on the proposed regulation on M855 Greentip ammunition in 2015 that saw a similar outcry.

First Bump Stock As A Machine Gun Prosecution Dropped

From Houston Chronicle:

A federal prosecutor withdrew the unique charge before the trial began for a Houston man accused of owning the device. However, the defense was prepared to call an ATF expert to testify that bump stocks, attachments that cause a rifle to fire more rapidly, do not render a semiautomatic gun a machine gun.

Experts had conflicting views on the matter, said defense attorney Tom Berg. But Rick Vasquez, a retired ATF agent and firearms expert, would have told the court the bump stock did not meet the statutory definition of a machine gun. The prosecution dismissed case, he said, because the government couldn’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt the bump stock was a machine gun.

Cabela’s Sued For Legal Ammunition Sale

From The Truth About Guns:

Federal law states that people can’t be sued for engaging in lawful trade of guns and ammo. Oh, if someone breaks the law or if the products are faulty, that’s different, but just for engaging in lawful trade? Nope.

Of course, that doesn’t stop lawsuits from happening. Usually, they’re thrown out, but an anti-gun court decision against Remington didn’t just hurt the company, it’s likely to hurt the entire gun industry as now the vultures are out and about. Since a judge ruled that the lawsuit against Remington could continue, they’re hoping other judges will follow suit.

Advantages Of A Two Point Sling

From SOFREP:

To put it simply: the one-point sling is not versatile enough. It’s really good at a specific role, and that is accommodating a direct action based use of the weapon. It is extremely good in this capacity but because it is such a specialized piece of kit, it lacks the versatility of the two-point. I am fully aware that they make hybrid slings that can be configured for both set-ups — honestly, this is a good option. But in my mind, the two-point is the appropriate choice when options are limited.

The AR As A Defensive Rifle

From SB Statesman:

Handguns and shotguns usually become significantly less effective at 100 yards, which is problematic for defending large properties such as farms. Violent crime rates in rural areas rose above the national and suburban averages in 2016. Rifles make up for this disadvantage and, with the right ammunition, are also effective in shorter ranges. Defensive use, however, requires the ability to fire again — quickly and accurately — if one misses. Manually-loaded firearms are impractical for that purpose, especially without significant practice.
As other weapons may not be suitable, law-abiding citizens should be allowed semi-automatic rifles to defend themselves from realistic threats.
