Following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s crackdown on citizens in Ottawa protesting COVID-19 restrictions, Republican Rep. Yvette Herrell (R-NM) compared Trudeau’s actions to “an authoritarian regime like Venezuela” and said she plans to introduce legislation to grant asylum to Canadian freedom protesters.

After three weeks of non-violent civil disobedience outside the Canadian parliament in Ottawa by truckers and other Canadian citizens struggling to uphold their right to not be subjected to forced “vaccination,” Justin Trudeau unleashed the goon squads. Thousands of militarized riot police (and other unidentified heavily-armed operatives) swarmed the area, surrounded the protesters, started breaking into trucks and arresting people, and beating them with batons and the butts of their rifles.

Fortunately, no one has been killed or even injured during the convoy and blockades, but introducing threats of government force greatly increases the likelihood of that possibility. Knowing truckers and their respect for both law enforcement and the rule of law, the ideal outcome will be that the drivers simply go home having made their presence and voices known in noble fashion. Trudeau loses in this situation because he comes off as an unimaginative tyrant whose creativity to deal with peaceful political expression is limited to bringing in storm troopers.

The leader of that party does what he wants, when he wants, and no one dares question him. Would a Prime Minister Trudeau arbitrarily whip the vote and outlaw certain moral questions? Could Prime Minister Trudeau be trusted to make decisions for the good of the country, not just for his personal self-worth? Would Trudeau call in the police to enforce his vision? Let’s hope we never have the opportunity to ask those questions.

Last summer, I warned readers of Common Sense that financial deplatforming would be the next wave of online censorship. Big Tech companies like PayPal were already working with left-wing groups like the ADL and SPLC to define lists of individuals and groups who should be denied service. As more and more similarly minded tech companies followed suit (as happened with social media censorship), these deplorables would be deplatformed, debanked, and eventually denied access to the modern economy altogether, as punishment for their unacceptable views.

Now Justin Trudeau is mad and he’s gone and invoked war measures, known as the Emergencies Act. He wants that hot tub off the streets, pronto, and he needs wartime powers to get it done. Civil liberties remain ‘temporarily’ suspended… just for two weeks, while we flatten the protesters!
