Iran arms itself with cutting edge, long-range missiles
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Threat Watch on 7/Aug/2010 16:07
“Iran has received four S-300 Russian long range surface-to-air missile systems even though Moscow decided not to implement a contract it had with Tehran to deliver them because of the new United Nations sanctions.”
Iranian Shock Troops in Venezuela?
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Threat Watch on 30/Jul/2010 18:30
“A Pentagon report to Congress about Iran’s current and future military strategy noted the activities of an elite unit, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps – Qod Force.
The Qod Force’s role is to “clandestinely exert military, political and economic power to advance Iranian national interests abroad.†Those activities range from gathering intelligence to supplying training, arms and financial support to surrogate groups and terrorist organizations, according to the 12-page unclassified version of the report. Those groups include Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Palestine.
The Qods Force is well-established in the Middle East and North Africa “and recent years have witnessed an increased presence in Latin America, particularly Venezuela,†the Pentagon report said, noting that if the U.S. gets more involved in local conflicts in those regions, contact with the Qods Force “directly, or through extremist groups it supports, will be more frequent and consequential.â€
“US more likely to attack Iran”, Former CIA head Hayden
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News on 25/Jul/2010 20:26
“A US military strike on Iran has become more likely and could be justifiable in the future, former CIA chief Michael Hayden said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“My personal view is that Iran left to its own devices will get itself to that step right below a nuclear weapon,” said Hayden, “and frankly that will be as destabilizing as their actually having a weapon.â€
The former CIA director stated that an attack on Iran had not originally been a serious option, but in light of Iran’s intensified pursuit of nuclear materials, the military option “may not be the worst of all possible outcomes.â€

‘Iran closer to developing nuclear bombs’ Russia warns
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Threat Watch on 12/Jul/2010 18:19
“Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says Iran is “moving closer” to having the potential to create nuclear weapons.
Russia, which has strong economic and military ties with Iran, has traditionally been an ally of Tehran.
“Iran is moving closer to possessing the potential which in principle could be used for the creation of nuclear weapons,” Mr Medvedev told a meeting of ambassadors in Moscow.”
Dan Plesch: “They are gearing up totally for the destruction of Iran,†Fidel Castro warns of immenent war
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News on 11/Jul/2010 16:25
“They are gearing up totally for the destruction of Iran,†according to Dan Plesch, director of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy at the University of London.
“US bombers and long range missiles are ready today to destroy 10,000 targets in Iran in a few hours,†he said. “The firepower of US forces has quadrupled since 2003,†accelerating under Obama.
The Arab press reports that an American fleet (with an Israeli vessel) passed through the Suez Canal on the way to the Persian Gulf, where its task is “to implement the sanctions against Iran and supervise the ships going to and from Iran.†British and Israeli media report that Saudi Arabia is providing a corridor for Israeli bombing of Iran (denied by Saudi Arabia).
The Obama administration has been rapidly expanding its offensive capacity in the African island of Diego Garcia, claimed by Britain, which had expelled the population so that the US could build the massive base it uses for attacking the Middle East and Central Asia.
The Navy reports sending a submarine tender to the island to service nuclear-powered guided-missile submarines with Tomahawk missiles, which can carry nuclear warheads. Each submarine is reported to have the striking power of a typical carrier battle group.
According to a US Navy cargo manifest obtained by the Sunday Herald (Glasgow), the substantial military equipment Obama has dispatched includes 387 “bunker busters†used for blasting hardened underground structures. Planning for these “massive ordnance penetrators,†the most powerful bombs in the arsenal short of nuclear weapons, was initiated in the Bush administration, but languished. On taking office, Obama immediately accelerated the plans, and they are to be deployed several years ahead of schedule, aiming specifically at Iran.
Fidel Castro is warning of an imminent war in the Persian Gulf. Released yesterday, this document reveals that Iran, Cuba, Chavez and their Axis are truly scared that the political war will soon be over and Iran will soon face punishment for their defiance.”

CIA Chief: Iran will have nuclear weapons, Taliban not interested in reconciliation
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Threat Watch on 28/Jun/2010 23:12
“We think [the Iranians] have enough low-enriched uranium right now for two weapons. They do have to enrich it, fully, in order to get there. And we would estimate that if they made that decision, it would probably take a year to get there, probably another year to develop the kind of weapon delivery system in order to make that viable.â€
A peace deal in Afghanistan? “The bottom line is that we really have not seen any firm intelligence that there’s a real interest among the Taliban, the militant allies of Al Qaeda, Al Qaeda itself, the Haqqanis, TTP, other militant groups. We have seen no evidence that they are truly interested in reconciliation.â€

Ahmadinejad: postponing nuclear talks to “punish the West
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Threat Watch on 28/Jun/2010 21:59
“Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Iran is willing to resume nuclear talks, but not until August, so as to “punish” the West. His comments were included in a flurry of anti-Western rhetoric to mark the anniversary of a 1981 explosion that killed key figures and dozens of supporters of Iran’s revolution.
Mr. Ahmadinejad says Iran is postponing nuclear talks because the West issued a Security Council resolution against it, supposedly to give them the upper hand in negotiations. He says Iran considers it immoral, and for this reason Tehran is delaying negotiations until late August, to “punish the West so they learn how to speak properly with other nations.”
Indicators of possible imminent attack on Iran?
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Threat Watch on 25/Jun/2010 23:26
“Recently Saudi Arabia gave Israel permission to fly over to strike Iran.
A US Carrier group was seen transiting the Suez Canal with IDF naval vessels on their way to the Persian Gulf.
News agencies have reported that IAF jets have landed at airfields in Saudi Arabia and that nuclear armed Israeli submarines are stationed off of Iran.
There are currently as many as three US Carrier groups in the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea and US Troops have been reported to be massing in Azerbaijan.”

Warfighting 101

“A universal peace … is in the catalogue of events, which will never exist but in the imaginations of visionary philosophers, or in the breasts of benevolent enthusiasts.” –James Madison
I spent much of the last week participating in a national security forum organized by the Air War College and hosted by the Twelfth Air Force and the 355th Fighter Wing at Davis-Monthan AFB.
Discussing the challenges of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and the surge for Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan with command personnel makes for lively debate, but the best part of these forums is incidental — the opportunity to meet many enlisted airmen and those flying the planes they make ready.
I have been on military bases across the nation, and without fail I am most impressed by the young uniformed Patriots who are the foundation of our military might. Simply put, their dedication, talent and spirit are second to none.
A Defensive Buildup in the Gulf
“This report is republished with permission of STRATFOR”
By George Friedman
This weekend’s newspapers were filled with stories about how the United States is providing ballistic missile defense (BMD) to four countries on the Arabian Peninsula. The New York Times carried a front-page story on the United States providing anti-missile defenses to Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman, as well as stationing BMD-capable, Aegis-equipped warships in the Persian Gulf. Meanwhile, the front page of The Washington Post carried a story saying that “the Obama administration is quietly working with Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf allies to speed up arms sales and rapidly upgrade defenses for oil terminals and other key infrastructure in a bid to thwart future attacks by Iran, according to former and current U.S. and Middle Eastern government officials.â€
Obviously, the work is no longer “quiet.†In fact, Washington has been publicly engaged in upgrading defensive systems in the area for some time. Central Command head Gen. David Petraeus recently said the four countries named by the Times were receiving BMD-capable Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) batteries, and at the end of October the United States carried out its largest-ever military exercises with Israel, known as Juniper Cobra.
More interesting than the stories themselves was the Obama administration’s decision to launch a major public relations campaign this weekend regarding these moves. And the most intriguing question out of all this is why the administration decided to call everyone’s attention to these defensive measures while not mentioning any offensive options.
