The More Laws They Pass The More People Will Innovate Around Them
From Times Union on the New York SAFE Act:
“It’s basically an AR-15 without the features,” said James Tresmond, a western New York lawyer representing H&H Firearms, a Lackawanna gun shop that’s seeking to sell such a rifle.”
Thanks to modifications by a Texas-based machine shop, the stripped-down rifle has an adapter that connects the spot where the grip would go to the stock, or portion of the rifle that the shooter braces against her shoulder.

Head of DHS Says Syria a Threat to U.S. Security
Posted by Brian in News, Threat Watch on 9/Feb/2014 09:28
From MilitaryTimes.com:
Johnson said he and other law enforcement and security officials around the world were focused on foreign fighters heading to the bloody war, including those from the United States, Canada and Europe.
U.S. intelligence officials have said a handful of Americans and hundreds of Europeans have already returned to their home countries. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the topic.
Syria isn’t the problem, it’s the people who traveled there and are now in this country.

Britain “Inadvertently” Censors the Web
From: Ars Technica
Your government has inadvertently censored the Web, but it’s working on a “fixâ€
Two days after Internet porn-blocking campaigner MP Claire Perry announced ISP filters were not overblocking content, the government has announced it is.
In fact it’s such a problem the government is creating a whitelist of sites that should be protected, as well as a system anyone can use to directly report the inadvertent blocking of their site to ISPs or check if their site is affected.
Privacy at the Olympics

From Silent Circle:
Russian authorities have openly acknowledged that widespread monitoring of phone, Internet and other communications systems is in place during the games and have framed these measures as part of overall security preparedness. Safety and security aside, this degree of persistent surveillance creates severe risks for visitors worried about sensitive personal and business communications being compromised when they keep in touch with colleagues and others from Sochi. There have been a number of stories over the past week warning that visitors and athletes can expect to be hacked, noting “it isn’t a mater of ‘if,†but a matter of ‘when.’â€
Americans Want Less-Strict Gun Laws
From The National Journal:
…the most dramatic rise in dissatisfaction comes from the contingency of Americans who feel gun laws are too strict, rather than from those who think they aren’t strict enough. This percentage jumped to 16 percent this year, a rate that more than triples the 5 percent recorded by Gallup last year. Meanwhile, the percentage of Americans favoring stricter gun laws fell seven points in 2014, from 38 to 31 percent.
Google Removes Privacy Feature From Android, Claims Release Was Accidental
Posted by Gary in Comms, News, Threat Watch on 6/Feb/2014 15:05
From: EFF
Google told us that the feature had only ever been released by accident — that it was experimental, and that it could break some of the apps policed by it. We are suspicious of this explanation, and do not think that it in any way justifies removing the feature rather than improving it.

New Book On The History Of Blacks And Firearms
The author writes about his book, Negroes and the Gun, in The Washington Post:
Speaking to both fugitives and freemen in 1854, Frederick Douglass advocated, “A good revolver, a steady hand and a determination to shoot down any man attempting to kidnap…. Every slave hunter who meets a bloody death in his infernal business is an argument in favor of the manhood of our race.†Douglass, like others in the early freedom movement, would come to view slavery as basically a state of war.
