Press release:
New model from Safariland™ ABA® Xtreme® Series offers competitive performance and price
June 01, 2010
Jadksonville, Florida
Safariland, a BAE Systems line of business, announced today that it has released an additional armor model that satisfies the requirements of the National Institute of Justice’s (NIJ) new Voluntary Body Armor Compliance Testing Program under NIJ Standard-0101.06 (NIJ-06).
The XT01 Type II is part of the ABA®, Xtreme Series of concealable armor. Tested against the 9mm & .357 mag. NIJ-designated rounds, the XT01 Type II is a hybrid armor design that combines the high performance of Honeywell® Gold Shield® ballistic material with Twaron® Microlaminate for enhanced ballistic and chemical resistance. The combination of these materials provides reliable protection against a wide array of threats, while also offering an enhanced degree of flexibility.
“The XT01 gives us a baseline, entry-level offering that adds to our existing family of armor solutions,†says Tim O’Brien, Concealable Armor Product Manager. “The package is competitively priced and offers the performance and comfort that many officers desire.â€
The NIJ introduced the Ballistic Resistance of Body Armor NIJ Standard-0101.06 to establish minimum performance requirements and test methods for the ballistic resistance of personal body armor. The standard provides improved performance of body armor so that officers receive adequate protection against those threats likely faced over the next decade. According to the new NIJ-06 standard, body armor must now be able to defend against increased velocities of ammunition calibers to better reflect current street threats and law enforcement duty weapons. These new performance requirements are critical components to improving the life-protecting equipment being used by law enforcement today.
All Safariland concealable armor models are certified using NIJ approved size templates C1 and C5, which offer law enforcement the widest range of production sizes available. In addition to these models, Safariland offers an array of concealable and tactical products, which are available and posted to the NIJ Compliant Products List (CPL) at http://www.justnet.org/Pages/06_CPL.aspx.
Safariland’s body armor models combine the heritage and expertise of American Body Armor, Second Chance®, SAVVY® and PROTECH® Tactical. In doing so, Safariland offers the most comprehensive line of body armor available in the industry. Safariland’s NIJ-06 body armor provides law enforcement officers with enhanced performance, durability, comfort and value, which deliver on the company’s motto: Together, We Save Lives™.

Wired’s Danger Room has a great article on a program to enhance the ability of US snipers. This is on the heels of a British soldier who took out the enemy at over 1.5 miles.
Darpa, the Pentagon’s way-out research arm, is hoping to use lasers and advanced optical systems to make other snipers Harrison-accurate, even when the winds are howling. The agency is looking for 15 ultraprecise sniper scopes to put in shooters’ hands by next year.
New Ruger SR-556C Piston Carbine

Press Release
Sturm, Ruger Introduces The SR-556Câ„¢ Piston Driven Carbine With A Shorter, Lighter Barrel
Southport, CT: May 13, 2010 – Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. (NYSE:RGR) is pleased to announce the introduction of the new Ruger® SR-556Câ„¢, a carbine-length derivative of the popular SR-556 two-stage piston driven AR style rifle. The new SR-556C features a heavy contour, fluted barrel that is 1-3/4″ shorter and a half-pound lighter than the original SR-556.
The 16.1″ barrel on the new SR-556C features an integrally machined flash suppressor, which minimizes the overall length of the barrel while maintaining compliance with ATF regulations for civilian and commercial sales. The SR-556C maintains the mid-length gas system and the heavy (.850″) barrel contour under the handguard of the original SR-556, however the barrel under the handguard is fluted for weight reduction and to promote barrel cooling.
“Many of our customers appreciate the limited muzzle rise when shooting the original SR-556, which allows them to re-acquire their sight picture more quickly between shots,” said Todd Wilkinson, Ruger’s Chief Engineer for Rifles. “However, some customers requested a shorter, lighter, faster handling gun that can more quickly acquire separate targets. This new SR-556C drops a full half pound off the front end of the gun, which changes its handling dynamics considerably, something our customers are really going to appreciate.”
The SR-556C offers the same great features that made the original SR-556 such a success: it includes the two-stage piston driven operating system with a four position adjustable gas regulator; chrome plated, cold hammer forged barrel; Troy Industries Folding Battlesights, Quad Rail, and rail covers; chrome plated bolt carrier group and operating system, six-position stock, Hogue® Monogrip® and three 30-round MAGPUL PMAG™ magazines.
For more information on the SR-556C, or any of the other rifles, pistols, or revolvers offered by Ruger, please visit www.Ruger.com, or visit your local firearms retailer.
Surefire M620V – Infrared Light without a Filter

Press Release
M620V
Scout Light® WeaponLight – White and IR Output
Fountain Valley, CA — SureFire, LLC, manufacturer of high-end illumination tools and tactical products, has unveiled a new lightweight LED WeaponLight capable of seamlessly switching from white to infrared light-no IR filter required. The new 620V, the latest in SureFire’s Scout Light® line, features a high-output white-light and IR LED in one sealed unit, both of which are fully selectable on the fly. And for military and law enforcement personnel who rely upon both white and infrared light to conduct their business, the 620V represents a major technological advancement.
Previously, if an operator wanted high-output white and IR light from one light source, the best option was an incandescent WeaponLight paired with an infrared filter. This is because white-light LEDs produce negligible infrared radiation and cannot be paired with an infrared filter for use on covert missions involving night vision devices (NVDs). However, incandescent lamps can break and will eventually burn out, and filters can be lost or damaged in the heat of battle, which made it necessary for operators to carry extra lamps and/or filters in the field. The 620V eliminates this problem by offering both white-light/IR capability and superior durability. Durability specifically in the form of weather-sealed, solid-state LEDs, which, unlike incandescent lamps, have no filament to break or burn out, so they never need replacing.
By incorporating a selectable white and IR light LED into one head, SureFire has given operators the ability to switch from a 150 lumens of blinding white light to 120 mW of invisible (to the naked eye) infrared light in under a second. A Total Internal Reflection lens focuses the light in either mode to create a beam with plenty of reach and enough surround light to accommodate peripheral vision, making the 620V suitable for both close-quarter and longer-range applications. And to ensure the WeaponLight never accidentally switches modes in the heat of combat, a spring-loaded selector ring automatically locks in place when a mode is selected.
Along with eliminating the need to carry spare lamps and filters in the field, fewer spare batteries are also needed with this new Scout Light. This is because LEDs operate far more efficiently than incandescent lamps. The 620V generates nearly two hours of tactical-level (enough to temporarily overwhelm night-adapted eyesight) white light on a set of batteries, or eight hours of useful infrared light on that same set.
The light itself won’t bog down a weapon or add to an operator’s load, either. It’s constructed of aerospace aluminum, hard anodized with a Mil-Spec finish, that’s as strong as steel but much lighter. And its compact size-less than six inches long and under eight ounces-doesn’t compromise a weapon’s maneuverability or eat up a lot of space on an accessory rail. A quick-attach/detach throw-lever mount securely attaches the 620V to any Picatinny rail, even out-of-spec ones, in seconds. And an included tape switch gives an operator the choice of activating the light via tailcap switching or, for even more surgical control, via the pressure-sensitive tape switch.
The Scout Light 620V is available in black or tan (Desert Sand) and retails for $550. For more information visit SureFire at www.surefire.com.
Hornady Critical Defense Ammo

From: Tac-Life.com
Conventional hollow points have always had issues with the cavity becoming clogged with fibers from clothing, rendering them ineffective in terms of expansion in soft tissue after they encounter the clothing barrier. But Hornady’s Critical Defense cartridge plugs this with their closely-guarded rubber material making for a clean penetration and predictable expansion with every shot.
As of 10-May-2010 available at Cabelas.
