FN Producing Semi Auto M249 Para

Here at SHOT Show’s annual industry day at the range, the company — the maker of the military’s M249 squad automatic weapon — introduced the M249S Para, a closed-bolt semi-automatic rifle that nonetheless retains the look and feel of the original, down to the belted ammunition. The gun, which features the collapsible buttstock first designed for parachute missions and special operations, follows FN’s M249S Standard, released last year.

New LMG Being Tested For The Army

Compared to the gun currently used, the M249 SAW, the LMG is 21.5 pounds, or 41 percent, lighter in weight and also has a 12 percent reduction in ammunition volume. It was recently tested at Fort Benning, Ga., and 15 of 19 soldiers said they preferred it to the M249 SAW, according to the Army.

New Light Machine Gun for Marines

Military.com reports on the introduction of the IAR (Infantry Automatic Rife) to replace the SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon).

The introduction of the M-27 is a return to the roots of the Marine infantry squad, Flynn argued, which featured an “automatic rifleman” that eventually evolved into a light machine gunner with the introduction of the SAW in the 1980s.The Corps’ adoption of the IAR has been fraught with controversy, with critics arguing the limited firepower of an M-27 — which shoots a 30-round magazine — would leave Marines vulnerable. The lead-spitting power of the M-249 and its 200-round drum helps keep bad guys in place while grunts maneuver in for the kill, skeptics argued.
