Afghans Aren’t Willing to Fight for their Country?

“Though our media doesn’t often point this out, the 134,000 heroes serving in the Afghan National Army have made extraordinary sacrifices in the name of freedom and Afghanistan. Next time someone says “Afghans aren’t willing to fight for their country, so why should we bother?” show them this video.

Another thing: Nine years into this war, we are realizing that if we ever hope to pull our troops out, we must have competent Afghan security forces to take over our task of keeping Afghanistan secure and free from the clutches of the Taliban and other Wahhabi lunatics. So we really must pray for, help train, and assist the Afghan Army and Police – they are our key to finally leaving Afghanistan.”

If you are wondering if there is anything you can do to support these heroes, you might like Spirit of America’s fundraising project for caps, boots, and jackets for the Afghan National Army located here:

Impact comparison: cinder block hit by 9mm, .40, .45, .223 and .308 rounds

This is not exactly a scientific analysis, but it’s a strong visual showing the impact of some common rounds on a cinder block, and you see clearly the power of a .308 rifle round.

(and you might think twice before relying on a cinder block wall for cover from rifle fire)

Report: Women should be allowed in combat units

By Uriel Sinai, Getty Images A female soldier from the mixed-sex battalion, Karakal, is in action during training near the Israeli-Egyptian border on Dec. 14, 2010.

“WASHINGTON (AP) — Women should finally be allowed to serve fully in combat, a military advisory panel said Friday in a report seeking to dismantle the last major area of discrimination in the armed forces.

Opponents of putting women in combat question whether they have the necessary strength and stamina. They also have said the inclusion of women in infantry and other combat units might harm unit cohesion, a similar argument to that made regarding gays. And they warn Americans won’t tolerate large numbers of women coming home in body bags. Those arguments have held sway during previous attempts to lift the ban.”

Barrett REC7 PDW

Press Release From Barrett®

ANNOUNCING THE NEW REC7® PDW (PERSONAL DEFENSE WEAPON) IN 5.56 NATO AND 6.8 SPC

(Murfreesboro, TN) Barrett announces the newest configuration of the REC7 piston-operated rifle line; the 8-inch REC7 PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) is now available.

Our REC7 PDW was developed to meet the needs of military and law enforcement customers, and it has caught their attention by offering rifle-cartridge power and precision in a submachine gun-sized package. The REC7 PDW comes in 5.56 NATO or the 6.8 SPC cartridge, and it is available with either a mil-spec single-stage trigger or select-fire trigger group (agency/export only).

The REC7 PDW offers all the refinements of its full-size counterpart, such as the 9310 steel Barrett Enhanced Piston Bolt, which is proofed and magnetic-particle tested to ensure reliable performance. The anti-tilt bolt carrier with integral piston strike face is machined from 8620 steel. The gas block is chrome–lined, forward venting and has a fluted gas piston cylinder. This increases reliability by eliminating carbon buildup. Forward venting also keeps the operator’s hands clear of hot gasses.

REC7’s piston is made of 17-4 stainless steel and is the strongest on the market. The piston is easily accessed for cleaning without needing to remove the rail system. This enables optical sights or laser devices to maintain their zero after routine maintenance. The Barrett PDW piston system eliminates issues experienced by ultra-short rifles, increasing reliability with or without a suppressor. Designed for suppressed operations, the PDW has a two-position (suppressed/unsuppressed) nitride finished gas plug, which is easily manipulated with gloves. The REC7 PDW’s upper supports a free-floated, hammer-forged, chrome-lined barrel that is proofed and magnetic particle tested for quality assurance.

Shotgun Home Defense Ammunition

BEST shotgun round for home defense?

(According to Firearms Tactical Institute)

Federal Classic 2 ¾-inch #1 buck load (F127)

(The Federal shotshell uses both a plastic shot cup and granulated plastic shot buffer to minimize post-ignition pellet deformation, whereas the Remington and Winchester loads do not.)

What about Birdshot?

“With birdshot you are wise to keep in mind that your gunfire has the potential to NOT PRODUCE an effective wound. Do not expect birdshot to have any decisive effect.

Number 1 buckshot has the potential to produce more effective wound trauma than either #00 or #000 buck, without the accompanying risk of over-penetration. The IWBA believes, with very good reason, that number 1 buckshot is the shotshell load of choice for quickly stopping deadly criminal violence.

Birdshot, because of its small size, does not have the mass and sectional density to penetrate deeply enough to reliably reach and damage critical blood distribution organs. Although birdshot can destroy a great volume of tissue at close range, the permanent crush cavity is usually less than 6 inches deep, and this is not deep enough to reliably include the heart or great blood vessels of the abdomen.

A gruesome, shallow wound in the torso does not guarantee a quick stop, especially if the bad guy is chemically intoxicated or psychotic. If the tissue crushed by the pellets does not include a vital cardiovascular structure there’s no reason for it to be an effective wound.”

Nutnfancy: “Knoxx Recoil Shotgun Stocks Suck”

There are many positive reviews about the Knoxx Recoil Shotgun Stock out there, several have been posted here on Warrior Times.

Nutnfancy does not agree.

Nutnfancy:

“I really wanted to like the Knoxx and we actually tried it in multiple shooting sessions over the last year and half. But despite many rounds fired with an open mind….it still sucks.

The Knoxx Recoil Reduction stock, or Blackhawk Spec Ops stock as marketed, has many shortcomings in my estimation. First and foremost it ruins consistency in the art of combat shotgunning, an all-important commodity that allows you to actually hit things with the gun.

A shotgun is a high recoil weapon with “high-base” or full-power rounds like 00 Buck or full power slugs. In my experience, that requires a nice low check weld on the stock that is consistent and repeatable, especially when using a simple bead sight. That results in an effective sighting plane that’s fast and solid.

And then there’s the pain: the Knoxx stock can slam your cheek bone hard!. The flare out ridge at the tube portion was found to be a painful reminder that you did not have the stock properly adjusted (too short). And even when it is properly adjusted, cheek smacks with FULL POWER loads can be expected. This stock should also allow a easily repeatable and solid stock weld as well. Through the recoil of shooting, these “welds” should not change and the should be predictable.”

Congressional Security and the Tucson Shooting

Congressional Security and the Tucson Shooting is republished with permission of STRATFOR.

By Fred Burton and Sean Noonan

Following the Jan. 8 shooting of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, Federal District Judge John McCarthy Roll and 17 others in Tucson, Arizona, discussion has focused on the motivations and ideology of the accused shooter, Jared Loughner. While it was important to make a quick assessment of Loughner’s profile in order to evaluate the possibility of an organized threat, all the available evidence (though not conclusive) indicates that he acted alone.

For the most part, discussion of the event has not touched on a re-evaluation of security for members of Congress. STRATFOR has previously analyzed the issues surrounding presidential security, and while there are common concerns in protecting all branches of government, Congress and the judiciary involve much larger numbers of people — 535 representatives and senators and more than 3,000 federal judges. And members of Congress put a high priority on public accessibility, which makes them more vulnerable.

A common mindset of politicians and their staffers is that better security will limit their accessibility and thus hinder their ability to do their job (and win elections). In fact, there are a number of measures that members of Congress and other public officials can institute for better security without limiting accessibility. While staying in a secure facility would be the safest, it isn’t a realistic option. What is realistic — and effective — is the prudent employment of protective intelligence as well as some measure of physical protection on the move. Read the rest of this entry »
