Overuse of SWAT Teams

Recent incidents in Oregon and Missouri should give many people pause. In Columbia Missouri a SWAT team raided the house of a suspected marijuana dealer killing one of his dogs and injuring another. They found only a few ounces of the drug. In Oregon a man was taken into custody for what appears to be crimes the police thought he would commit:

This supposedly voluntary exchange involved two SWAT teams, officers from Medford and nearby Roseburg, sheriff’s deputies from Jackson and Douglas counties, and the Oregon State Police. Pyles hadn’t committed any crime; nor was he suspected of having committed one. The police never obtained a warrant for either search or arrest. They never consulted with a judge or a mental health professional before sending military-style tactical teams to take Pyles in.

“They woke me up with a phone call at about 5:50 in the morning,” Pyles says. “I looked out the window and saw the SWAT team pointing their guns at my house. The officer on the phone told me to turn myself in. I told them I would, on three conditions. I would not be handcuffed. I would not be taken off my property. And I would not be forced to get a mental health evaluation. He agreed. The second I stepped outside, they jumped me. Then they handcuffed me, took me off my property, and took me to get a mental health evaluation.”

One story involves a nonviolent crime and the other there was no crime committed at all. Neither situation called for the use of SWAT teams. The problem is that cities are incentivized to create SWAT teams when they have no use for them. Once the teams are in place the cities force the teams in to situations where they are not needed.

Army Aviation Summit

Army Aviation Summit

Preparing Army Aviation for the Future
The US Army has been making great strides in Aviation advancement. Due to the mountainous terrain and extreme climate conditions faced in the Afghan and Pakistani theaters, The US Army has increased focus and resources on Helicopters and UAVs to provide support, transportation, intelligence, deadly force and to rescue troops as they combat the insurgency.

IDGA’s Army Aviation 2010 is the premier event in the US that examines the link between emerging requirements, technology, and the long term focus of US Army Aviation Programs. Did The Daily Show Ask Aasif Mandvi to Stop Talking About Muslim Extremism?

“Aasif Mandvi is a funny guy. He is also The Daily Show‘s “Senior Islamic Correspondent.” So why would the show ask him not to talk about Muslim extremist threats after the Times Square bombing attempt?

Fox411—”Your First Call for Celebrity News, If Stephen Baldwin Counts as a Celebrity”—has a scoop! And their scoop is: Islam is ruining TV! No one is allowed to say the bad things about the Moslems anymore, due to “the supercharged climate.”

Home of Swedish cartoonist attacked

“The home of a Swedish artist who once drew a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad as a dog has been hit by a suspected arson attack, police said Saturday.

Lars Vilks, who lives in Nyhamnslage in southern Sweden, was not at home during the attack late Friday night and no one was reported injured.

It was the latest in a week of attacks on the 53-year-old cartoonist, who was assaulted Tuesday by a man while he lectured at a university and saw his Web site apparently attacked by hacker on Wednesday.”

My favorite comment on this story: “If you think that tea baggers and religious conservatives are the enemy, but come up with excuses why muslims are justified in their rage over cartoons, you have no ability to think rationally.”

I’m not making any judgment on tea baggers or religious conservatives, but I find it curious how selective humans can be with their outrage.

And so, now, everyone will be afraid to express anything that might upset these people?

From: Royal Marines

Marine killed in Afghanistan

It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must announce that a Marine from 40 Commando Royal Marines serving as part of Combined Forces Sangin, Helmand, was killed in Afghanistan today, Sunday 9 May 2010.

The Marine was killed in an explosion that happened near Patrol Base Blenheim, in Sangin, Helmand Province, this morning.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel James Carr-Smith, said:

“It is with deep sorrow I must inform you that a Marine from 40 Commando Royal Marines was killed by an explosion in Sangin this morning.

“He was part of a foot patrol in an operation which was being conducted in support of the Afghan National Army when he was struck by an explosion.

“He died in the course of his duty, seeking to provide reassurance and security to the local nationals in Sangin. He will be sorely missed and his sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.

US-born cleric inspired Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad

“The influence of US-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki looms again as new evidence strengthens the notion that Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad was inspired by a global extremist network stretching from Yemen to Pakistan.

New evidence is deepening a notion, albeit still unverified, that the failed car bombing in Times Square was not the work of one disgruntled young man, but inspired by a global extremist network stretching from Yemen to Pakistan, united by the Internet and a common radical vision of faith.”

Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees

“They said we could wear it on any other day,” Daniel Galli said, “but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it’s supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today.”

The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts “incendiary” that would lead to fights on campus.

Grants for Shooting Ranges

Press Release

NSSF to award up to $500,000 to shooting ranges

NEWTOWN, Conn. — To help public and private shooting facilities jump start their recruitment and retention efforts, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) will be awarding up to $500,000 in grants this year to ranges around the country.

This is the third year that NSSF has distributed funding to qualifying ranges through its Range Partnership Grant Program.

“These grants will help shooting range managers create new strategies to drive traffic to their facilities and, in turn, benefit the future of our sports,” said Chris Dolnack, NSSF senior vice president. “Research tells us that millions of Americans would like to try shooting, and the place to get started is at one of the thousands of ranges across the country.”

The projects funded by the grants will also serve as pilot programs, which, if successful, can be used by other facilities.

“The best way to increase participation is to enhance and promote shooting opportunities at the local level,” said Melissa Schilling, NSSF recruitment and retention manager. “We’re looking for unique proposals that move the needle on recruiting new shooters, attracting lapsed shooters back to the range and increasing opportunities for active shooters.”

Shooting ranges interested in applying for a grant can learn more about NSSF’s Range Partnership Grant Program at http://nssf.org/shooting/grants.
