Mexico sending more troops to zone next to Texas
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Threat Watch on 25/Nov/2010 17:19
“MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico will send more troops and federal police to try to control drug violence that has spiraled into warfare in parts of the northeast along the U.S. border, the government said Wednesday.
The goal of “Coordinated Operation Northeast” is to reinforce government authority in the two states most heavily affected by a surge in violence following a split between the Gulf and Zetas drug gangs, federal police spokesman Alejandro Poire said.”

“Hazmat teams are very, very carefully clearing the residence of a Serbian national living in the San Diego County town of Escondido— the home was filled with the “the largest” cache of various varieties of homemade explosives ever found in one place in the US.”
Badass of the Week: Dwight Johnson
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News on 24/Nov/2010 21:53
“You don’t really think of Vietnam as being a tank warfare kind of affair… mostly because trying to drive a tank through a jungle is a logistical undertaking that borders on being retarded.
Perhaps that’s why Specialist Dwight Johnson of the 1st Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment holds the impressive distinction of being the only tank driver to receive the Medal of Honor for actions in combat during Vietnam.
Although, as you might expect, the actions that led to Spc. Johnson receiving America’s highest award for bravery in combat actually had very little to do with this ultra-over-the-top hardass actually sitting behind at the controls of his M48A3 battle tank, and a lot more with taking on an entire North Vietnamese Army offensive by himself armed with nothing more than a .45-caliber handgun and a complete lack of anything resembling fear or restraint.”

California man gathering signatures for proposed immigration law similar to Arizona’s
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News on 24/Nov/2010 15:34
“California voters may get a chance to weigh in on a proposal similar to Arizona’s controversial immigration law, after the secretary of state gave the go-ahead to a Belmont man to collect signatures for a proposed ballot initiative.
The proposal would require state law enforcement officials to investigate a person’s immigration status if they are “reasonably suspicious” the person is in the country illegally, and would make it a state crime for undocumented immigrants to “seek work while concealing their immigration status.” It would also make it a crime, under state law, for employers to hire an illegal immigrant either intentionally or unknowingly.
Erickson said he was careful to tailor the California proposal to address some of the concerns expressed by a federal judge over the Arizona law”

Pentagon report: Afghans believe Taliban victory inevitable
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News on 23/Nov/2010 22:33
“Washington (CNN) — A new Defense Department report on Afghanistan says dramatic increases in fighting against the Taliban have failed to convince the local population that the Afghan government and coalition forces will succeed.
“The Taliban’s strength lies in the Afghan population’s perception that Coalition forces will soon leave, giving credence to the belief that a Taliban victory is inevitable,” the report says.”

North Korean Artillery Attack on a Southern Island

RED ALERT
North Korea and South Korea have reportedly traded artillery fire Nov. 23 across the disputed Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the Yellow Sea to the west of the peninsula. Though details are still sketchy, South Korean news reports indicate that around 2:30 p.m. local time, North Korean artillery shells began landing in the waters around Yeonpyeongdo, one of the South Korean-controlled islands just south of the NLL. North Korea has reportedly fired as many as 200 rounds, some of which struck the island, injuring at least 10 South Korean soldiers, damaging buildings and setting fire to a mountainside. South Korea responded by firing some 80 shells of its own toward North Korea, dispatching F-16 fighter jets to the area and raising the military alert to its highest level.
South Korean President Lee Myung Bak has convened an emergency Cabinet meeting, and Seoul is determining whether to evacuate South Koreans working at inter-Korean facilities in North Korea. The barrage from North Korea was continuing at 4 p.m. Military activity appears to be ongoing at this point, and the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff are meeting on the issue. No doubt North Korea’s leadership is also convening. Read the rest of this entry »
New Light Machine Gun for Marines
Military.com reports on the introduction of the IAR (Infantry Automatic Rife) to replace the SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon).
The introduction of the M-27 is a return to the roots of the Marine infantry squad, Flynn argued, which featured an “automatic rifleman” that eventually evolved into a light machine gunner with the introduction of the SAW in the 1980s.The Corps’ adoption of the IAR has been fraught with controversy, with critics arguing the limited firepower of an M-27 — which shoots a 30-round magazine — would leave Marines vulnerable. The lead-spitting power of the M-249 and its 200-round drum helps keep bad guys in place while grunts maneuver in for the kill, skeptics argued.
GunSafe iPhone App

Defense Review has a nice review of a new iPhone app that logs all the information for all your firearms.
GunSafe allows you to securely load, store, and categorize information on every firearm they own. You can load the weapon’s make, model, serial number, purchase/transfer location, date of purchase/transfer, purchase price, and provide notes on it. You can also store a photo of the weapon.
New Etymotic Hearing Protection/Enhancement
Posted by Gary in Accessories, Warrior Tools on 21/Nov/2010 18:16
From: MIT Technology Review
Etymotic’s BlastPLG earplugs are designed to safeguard troops from long-term hearing damage without compromising their “situational awareness.”
… Remember that scene in Black Hawk Down where a soldier literally goes deaf because his buddy is shooting a giant machine gun right next to his head? The movie played it for laughs, but military hearing loss is no joke. According to high-end audio company Etymotic Research, “an alarmingly high percentage of deployed soldiers” sustain permanent hearing loss and tinnitus.
Earplugs are the obvious solution, but you can’t exactly stay frosty on patrol when you’ve got foam jammed in your ears blocking everything out. Etymotic’s EB15 BlastPLG earplugs attempt to square the circle by electronically attentuating sudden blast sounds while letting normal decibel levels through — or even enhancing them.
The $450 price tag makes sense when you consider that the EB15 is a state of the art hearing aid and earplug at the same time.
M1 Abrams Tanks Arrive in Afghanistan
Posted by Brian in News, Threat Watch on 19/Nov/2010 17:02
In another increase of force, a small contingent of Abrams tanks are headed to Afghanistan.
From The Washington Post:
The deployment of a company of M1 Abrams tanks, which will be fielded by the Marines in the country’s southwest, will allow ground forces to target insurgents from a greater distance – and with more of a lethal punch – than is possible from any other U.S. military vehicle. The 68-ton tanks are propelled by a jet engine and equipped with a 120mm main gun that can destroy a house more than a mile away.
The Marines had wanted to take tanks into Afghanistan when they began deploying in large numbers in spring 2009, but the top coalition commander then, Army Gen. David D. McKiernan, rejected the request, in part because of concern it could remind Afghans of the tank-heavy Soviet occupation in the 1980s. As it became clear that other units were getting the green light to engage in more heavy-handed measures, the Marines asked again, noting that Canadian and Danish troops had used a small number of tanks in southern Afghanistan. This time, the decision rested with Petraeus, who has been in charge of coalition forces in Afghanistan since July. He approved it last month, the officials said.
The strange case of Brian Aitken
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News on 18/Nov/2010 22:54
In August, Brian Aitken — who followed New Jersey’s draconian firearm laws to a “T†— was convicted by the state’s anti-gun kangaroo court of “unlawful possession of a handgun.â€
You see, in New Jersey you’re required to get a permit to purchase a handgun by Big Brother State Government. This is not a permit to OWN, simply to purchase: however, the jackboots in New Jersey’s state police treat anyone in possession of a handgun without such a permit as a felon.
While moving from Colorado to New Jersey, Brian was transporting three handguns — which were legally purchased in Colorado — between his mother’s house and his new apartment.
Because of some stress factors in his life, Brian’s mother called the police for a “welfare†check of Brian. Brian’s mother was a social worker who had been conditioned by years of government work to trust the state to oversee emotionally charged situations.
The state police searched his car and discovered the handguns, locked in cases and separate from ammunition, as New Jersey law requires.
Despite not violating ANY of New Jersey’s outrageous firearms laws, Brian was arrested for the “unlawful†possession of a handgun.
Throughout his trial, the anti-gun statists in the New Jersey legal system routinely blocked Brian’s attorney from presenting evidence of Brian’s innocence. New Jersey law specifically states that the transportation of handguns between residences is legal.
Jurors even asked the judge three times if state law contained exemptions for the transportation of handguns from one residence to another, but the … judge refused to answer.
Brian Aitken was convicted of felony possession of a handgun and faces up to seven years in jail.
