Is The Gun Culture To Blame For America’s Foreign Policy?

Tyler Cowen seems to think so:

Gun possession breeds a certain kind of kick-ass mentality—”martial culture”—that doesn’t stop at the border’s edge, but spills “over there.” Therefore, if libertarians want to restrain America’s adventurism abroad, they will have to stop looking at guns from a narrow rights-based perspective, as is their wont, and start looking at them from the standpoint of the undesirable foreign policy consequences they produce—and so accept some gun regulation.

Reason’s reply:

As a naturalized American from India, I have always been both amused and bemused by the American romance with guns. I have also observed firsthand the destabilizing effect of America’s post-9/11 “martial interventions” near my native country. Thus, if there were a serious chance that restrictions on gun rights would help reduce Uncle Sam’s war mongering, I would consider it. But color me dubious.

Cowen’s argument is intriguing and original—not to mention refreshing in that it doesn’t put the religious faith that liberals do in gun control diminshing violence. It also has a certain intuitive plausibility. But does support for private gun rights actually generate a spirit of martial interventionism? Actually, as far as libertarians are concerned, the connection runs in the other direction.

A Brit Comes To Terms With American Gun Culture

From Takimag.com:

In summary, I am pro-gun, as I am, for example, pro-car, and didn’t see my belief in licensing users with a mandated level of skill, sanity, and noncriminality as making me “anti” either of them. I had assumed—and here lay my error and arguably my arrogance—that a similar sort of belief existed among “reasonable” gun owners in the United States: that they too thought it seriously worrying that they were 33 times more likely to die by someone else shooting them in their country than I am in mine, and if only someone who actually liked guns and knew a bit about them made a sensible case then they might listen. I see much similar commentary in the center-right press today.

I was wrong—and not just in my belief about the pro-gun lobby listening, but in the very fundaments of my argument. Here is the first thing that many anti-gun Americans and almost everyone else in the civilized world does not understand, not least because it is seldom explicitly acknowledged: A significant number of U.S. citizens, perhaps even a majority, are willing to accept these levels of gun violence as collateral damage for a greater good, the liberty to own arms.

Canada Reversing Gun Control Laws

From Sun News Network:

The act would limit the powers of provincial chief firearms officers, make all firearm licences possession-and-acquisition (PAL) licences, make it easier for legal gun owners to transport restricted firearms around their home province, provide a grace period to renew expired gun licenses, make the gun safety course mandatory for new shooters, and crack down further on domestic abusers owning guns.

New Book On The History Of Blacks And Firearms

The author writes about his book, Negroes and the Gun, in The Washington Post:

Speaking to both fugitives and freemen in 1854, Frederick Douglass advocated, “A good revolver, a steady hand and a determination to shoot down any man attempting to kidnap…. Every slave hunter who meets a bloody death in his infernal business is an argument in favor of the manhood of our race.” Douglass, like others in the early freedom movement, would come to view slavery as basically a state of war.

DoD: Founding Fathers Were Terrorists and Your Ideas About Liberty Are “Extreme”

From Judicial Watch:

Judicial Watch announced today that it has obtained educational materials from the Department of Defense (DOD) depicting conservative organizations as “hate groups” and advising students to be aware that “many extremists will talk of individual liberties, states’ rights, and how to make the world a better place.” The documents repeatedly cite the leftwing Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as a resource for identifying “hate groups.”

Dept. of State Takes Down DEFCAD Gun Files

The Blaze reports that the Department of State has claimed ownership of the information which Defense Distributed had on its website.

A letter to Defense Distributed from the Department of State, Bureau of Political Military Affairs, Office of Defense Trade Controls Compliance, Enforcement Division (DTCC/END) explains that while conducting a review of the data posted on DEFCAD it found that the licensed firearm manufacturer might have released ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations)-controlled information without authorization and would thus be in violation.

New Jersey - -(Ammoland.com)- The newly emerged Firearms Equality Movement is gaining more steam among manufactures and gun rights supporters alike.
The firearms industry, in reaction to the Governor of New York ramming through the NY SAFE Act which banned AR15 style rifles, has seen multiple manufactures revise their firearms sales polices to restrict LEO and Police Agencies from only buying the same level of firepower as is allowed for the average citizen of their state.
Thereby helping to make the citizens equal to police and law enforcement agencies with in the same state, and, in some part, making rouge politicians accountable for their actions trying to disarm the people.
It is important to note that the Movement is not asking industry to join a “conspiracy” but only to make their own sales policies support the right of the individual to keep and bear the same arms as all other classes of people in their respective states. The Firearms Movement is just that, a movement and not collusion, as some have suggested. In the end each and every company is free to do business as they wish.
The List of Manufactures as complied by NC Gun Blog has continued to grow and at last count (2-27-2013) included the following.

As of yet we have not seen the big four manufactures, Glock, Sig Saur, Smith & Wesson and Ruger, that supply the majority of police contracts, make the same policy changes but I am still hopeful that they will move to support their biggest customer of all, the American people.

It is great to see manufactures banding together to protect the rights of their customers and hold politicians accountable for their acts disarming the American public.
As this movement evolves I would like to see this become an unsaid blanket policy that apply to all states, especially New Jersey, Maryland, California and anywhere else where honest law abiding citizens right to keep and bear arms of equal fire power as the state the live in.

Emotional Liberals Pass Gun Legislation in New York

The state of New York doesn’t deserve to have the Statue of Liberty. They no longer know what the word liberty means. I have suggested to a few friends, that we need to find a liberty loving billionaire, and just take the statue from them.

From the Washington Times:

Current owners of a now-certified “high capacity ammunition feeding device” — over 7 rounds — will have one year to sell or give them away out of state or face a class A misdemeanor charge. Dealers will have to start recording every ammunition sale with the buyer’s name, age, occupation and residence.

Gun retailers will have to record for the state police every sale that involves a firearm. The seller will have to record the buyer’s name,  age,  occupation and home address, along with the calibre, make, model, manufacturer’s name and serial number.
