Army Delaying Training Women Infantry

From Military Times:

“Our view is, when we open [the military occupational specialty], we start sending women to the training,” Brinkley said Dec. 4 after briefing the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services. “When we open infantry up, we start sending women.”

The female Marines who graduated from infantry basic training will not be assigned to infantry jobs because those jobs in the Marine Corps are not yet open to women. The women will go to different MOSs.

Women To Join Marine Infantry

Soon, enlisted women also will have an opportunity to attend infantry training, Dunford said. Marine officials are developing plans to assign female Marines to the Corps’ Infantry Training Battalions, which fall under the Schools of the Infantry.

Starting in May, women will be considered for about 400 positions within six types of battalions:

• Amphibious assault

• Artillery

• Combat assault

• Combat engineer

• Low-altitude air defense

• Tank.

The Right to Fight: Womens’ Role in the Military

Women’s roles in the military have always served as a case for controversy, and women continue to struggle not only for equality of positions and duties, but to surpass barriers that lead to promotion, which sometimes cannot be achieved unless access to certain positions are granted.

Many of us question how this can even be an issue in the 21st Century Western world, where women assume an array of powerful and influential roles. The cold, hard truth is women are not yet given the same opportunities in the military as men. The issue, however, is being addressed and laws are slowly being passed to change this.
