Juarez violence leaves 8,500 orphans

(Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua) More than 7,000 murders in Ciudad Juárez over the past three years attributed to the drug war, have left nearly 8,500 children orphaned, according to an official source for the state of Chihuahua.

To support these children, the government of Chihuahua has created a trust fund to benefit those minors under 14 years old.

Ciudad Juarez is considered the most violent city in Mexico with 3,100 murders in 2010. So far this year, there have been 350 people killed, according to the Attorney General.

Suspect Julian Zapata Espinoza: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent killed by mistake

MEXICO CITY- Mexican soldiers have arrested an alleged Zetas drug cartel member who allegedly confessed to killing a U.S. immigration agent, but said the attack was a case of mistaken identity.

Suspect Julian Zapata Espinoza – known by the nickname “El Piolin,” or Tweety Bird, apparently because of his short stature – told soldiers that a group of gunmen from the Zetas mistook the officer’s vehicle for one used by a rival gang.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jaime Zapata was shot to death and fellow agent Victor Avila was wounded while driving on a highway near the northern city of San Luis Potosi on Feb. 15.

Dudley Brown, of National Association for Gun Rights, on current gun control threats

“Whether it was the Columbine tragedy, or the Virginia Tech massacre, gun-grabbers never hesitate to blame law-abiding Second Amendment supporters for the actions of bloodthirsty lunatics and criminals.

And when the pressure is on, weak-kneed Republicans and so-called “blue dog” Democrats who mouthed pro-gun rhetoric in their campaigns seem all too willing to just “fall in line.”

Supposedly “pro-gun” Republicans like former Vice President Dick Cheney, U.S. Senator Richard Luger (IN) and House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter King (NY) have all joined in on the anti-gun hysteria, as well.

You and I can’t let that happen again. Just consider what is at stake, including:

* A new so-called “Assaults Weapon Ban” — targeting ALL semi-automatic rifles and shotguns — which, unlike the Clinton ban, will NEVER expire;

* An outright BAN on “high capacity” magazines — banning the sale and manufacture of magazines holding more than just a handful of rounds;

* A National Concealed-Carry “Standard” — designed to make it even more difficult for law-abiding citizens to carry a gun to protect themselves and their families from murderers like Jared Loughner;

* Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s “Catch All Gun Control Scheme” — to create a national “cannot buy registry,” allowing citizens to be stripped of their Second Amendment rights on a Justice Department whim and effectively banning all private gun sales.”

Saudi with student visa in West Texas Arrested For “Attempted Use of Weapon of Mass Destruction”

“Moments ago, the Department of Justice announced that an investigation by the FBI’s Dallas Joint Terrorism Task Force has led to the arrest of 20-year-old Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, who was born in Saudi Arabia but came to the United States in 2008 on a student visa so he could attend South Plains College in Levelland, just outside Lubbock.

The feds allege that Aldawsari attempted to buy chemicals needed to make an improvised explosive device, posted repeatedly to blogs promising to help defeat “the infidels” and kept a list of “potential U.S. targets.” Says the Department of Justice:

On Feb. 6, 2011, the affidavit alleges, Aldawsari sent himself an e-mail titled “Tyrant’s House,” in which he listed the Dallas address for former President George W. Bush. The affidavit also alleges that Aldawsari conducted research that could indicate his consideration of the use of infant dolls to conceal explosives and possible targeting of a nightclub with an explosive concealed in a backpack.”

Disabled Vets Return To Service

Tactical Wire has a great article on a pair of disabled vets that returned to service and went on to compete in the Army’s Marksmanship program.

As if by fate for these two noncommissioned officers, the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit with the assistance of the World Class Athlete Program was in the process of building a ground-breaking Paralympic section, thus creating a unique opportunity for wounded veterans deemed able to continue to serve on active-duty to demonstrate the strength of our Soldiers in Paralympic competition.

Interest in Concealed Carry Permits Increases

From Tactical Wire:

Of particular significance, however, is the finding that the handgun owners who don’t already possess a concealed-carry permit, about 40 percent said they intend to apply for one within the next 12 months. This strong interest in obtaining concealed-carry weapon (CCW) permits could mean a real demand for training and CCW-related accessories and firearms in the coming year.

The Threat of Civil Unrest in Pakistan and the Davis Case

The Threat of Civil Unrest in Pakistan and the Davis Case is republished with permission of STRATFOR.

By Scott Stewart

On Feb. 13, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) issued a statement demanding that the government of Pakistan execute U.S. government contractor Raymond Davis or turn him over to the TTP for judgment. Davis, a contract security officer for the CIA, has been in Pakistani custody since a Jan. 27 incident in which he shot two men who reportedly pointed a pistol at him in an apparent robbery attempt.

Pakistani officials have corroborated Davis’ version of events and, according to their preliminary report, Davis appears to have acted in self-defense. From a tactical perspective, the incident appears to have been (in tactical security parlance) a “good shoot,” but the matter has been taken out of the tactical realm and has become mired in transnational politics and Pakistani public sentiment. Whether the shooting was justified or not, Davis has now become a pawn in a larger game being played out between the United States and Pakistan.

When one considers the way similar periods of tension between the Pakistanis and Americans have unfolded in the past, it is not unreasonable to conclude that as this current period plays out, it could have larger consequences for Davis and for American diplomatic facilities and commercial interests in Pakistan. Unless the Pakistani government is willing and able to defuse the situation, the case could indeed provoke violent protests against the United States, and U.S. citizens and businesses in Pakistan should be prepared for this backlash. The Difference Between .223 and 5.56

Richard Johnson has written a good article for Guns and Patriots at Human Events on the dangerous differences between the calibers.

The significant difference between the .223 Rem and 5.56 NATO lies in the rifles, rather than the cartridges themselves.  Both the .223 and 5.56 rounds will chamber in rifles designed for either cartridge, but the critical component, leade, will be different in each rifle.

Indiana Expands Concealed Carry

From Evansville Courier & Press:

Hoosiers who have permits could take their guns to libraries, public hospitals and city council meetings under a measure the state Senate approved Monday.

“They are your first responder,” Tomes said, referring to those carrying concealed weapons. Senate Bill 292 passed on a 38-12 vote. It now moves to the House.

Ammo Ban Overturned in California

From The Volokh Conspiracy:

The lawsuit alleged that, “It is practically impossible, both for those subject to the law and for those who must enforce it, to determine whether any of the thousands of different types of ammunition cartridges that can be used in handguns are actually ‘principally for use in’ or used more often in, a handgun. The proportional usage of any given cartridge is impossible to determine, and in any event changes with market demands.”
