Ruger 556 Available in 6.8 SPC

Seems kind of strange that a rifle called the 556 is now available in 6.8, but more calibers can’t be a bad thing right?
Mossberg’s New AR style 22LR
Posted by Gary in Long Guns, Mossberg, Training Tools, Warrior Tools on 23/Sep/2010 14:40
Mossberg is joining S&W and others in the AR style .22Â rimfire market with the introduction of thier Tactical .22.
Press Release
Introducing the Tactical .22 Autoloading Rimfires by Mossberg International
North Haven, CT – Mossberg International introduces the Tactical .22–an alternative firearm for those shooters and enthusiasts who want the look and feel of an AR-style .22 rimfire with an affordable price. With the rising costs of centerfire ammunition, the new Tactical .22 rimfires are a great choice for recreational shooters, as well as those searching for a cost-effective training platform.
The lightweight and fast-handling Tactical .22 parallels the look and feel of today’s AR-style rifle while being built around Mossberg International’s reliable .22 autoloader. Taking cues from their proven 702 autoloader, the Tactical .22 matches an 18†barrel to a quad rail forend allowing the operator to fit the rifle with lights, lasers or other tactical accessories. Two stock configurations will be offered in this series: a six-position adjustable and fixed stock. The six-position polymer stock adjusts the length of pull from 10-3/4†– 14.5†accommodating youth and smaller framed shooters up to adults. The fixed position stock has a standard 13†LOP. The Tactical .22 is integrated with an A2-style carry handle and an adjustable rear sight aligned with a front post sight. The Picatinny handle mount is included, allowing versatility in scopes and other optics while providing the clearance necessary to utilize the AR-style sights. Other features included with the Tactical .22 are sling mounts and a ten round magazine.
MSRP: $276

Voices From the Field: More Bang for the Buckby Paul Markel
The boom in black rifle (AR) sales naturally led to a boom in the sale of .223 Remington or 5.56x45mm ammunition. This was no big surprise to anyone as that is the most popular chambering for that rifle. What you had was thousands of new AR owners now added to the .223 gene pool. The days of paying three dollars for a box of Winchester white box .223 are gone and not likely to return.
There is little doubt that feeding these self-loading, centerfire rifles has become a pricey endeavor. They are enjoyable to shoot, hence we do a lot of it. Your budget might allow for 100 rounds shooting sessions or 500 round extended weekends. Regardless, it’s always good to get more bang for your buck.
It was with this in mind that I first acquired a S&W M&P15 carbine chambered in 5.45×39 Russian. The price of the Russian equivalent to our 5.56mm runs about half. Simply put, you can buy 1000 rounds of 5.45×39 for what you’d pay for 500 in .223 Remington. That’s training or practice ammo mind you, match grade and controlled expansion .223 Rem runs much high at about a buck a shot.
Remington 870: America’s Choice For A Defensive Shotgun
Posted by Jack Sinclair in Remington on 12/Sep/2010 18:57
Is buying American, supporting American companies, important to you?
Then consider the Remington 870 as a strong option for home defense.
We suggest you consider the Remington 870 first and foremost because it is a quality, reliable weapon with a long history of dependability. But it’s also made right here in the USA. You can pick up cheaper shotguns, such as the NEF (made in China), Charles Daly (made in Turkey) or other foreign made, lower priced shotguns. But when you’ve got one of the best options made right her, the Remington 870, why not support a business in your own country, not China or Turkey!

Effectiveness of 00 Buckshot? 25 Yard Test.

Of course, whether or not 00 buckshot is a good choice for use as home defense, in the confines of your home, is a completely different question. But this illustrates the effect of 00 buckshot at 25 yards.

Wilson Combat 6.8 Project
Posted by Gary in Long Guns, Warrior Tools, Wilson Combat on 18/Aug/2010 16:22
“6.8 SPC was developed for better terminal effects while still having an acceptable long range trajectory. “
After a tremendous amount of research and testing by Bill Wilson and the Wilson Combat team we are excited to announce the availability of our custom AR platform rifles chambered in 6.8 SPC caliber.
The 6.8 SPC (6.8x43mm) was initially developed by MSG Steve Holland and Chris Murray a United States Army Marksmanship Unit gunsmith to offer superior downrange lethality over the 5.56 NATO/.223 Remington in an AR pattern service rifle with minimal loss of magazine capacity and a negligible increase in recoil. When built to the level of quality and precision Wilson Combat has achieved the 6.8 SPC is also capable of outstanding accuracy and reliability.
In our match-grade, Spec II chambered 16†barrels, The 6.8 SPC is capable of pushing a .277 caliber, 85gr bullet to over 2900 FPS. 110gr bullets easily achieve 2500 FPS with factory loaded ammunition. Appropriate hand loading can achieve even higher velocities and enable the use of heavier projectiles up to 130 grains, which dramatically improves terminal ballistics over a 5.56 Nato/.223 Remington at long range.
This added ballistic performance makes the 6.8 SPC perfect for home protection and SRT/SWAT teams. The 6.8 is a truly ideal hunting round for medium to heavy game and turns the AR into a serious hunting rifle.
The Knoxx recoil reduction stock
Posted by Jack Sinclair in Accessories, Long Guns on 3/Aug/2010 19:47
“The Knoxx stock uses fairly massive internal springs to absorb and spread out the recoil pulse of the heavy hitting shotgun. The kick is still there, but instead of a painful jab it’s reduced to a long ‘shove’.
This technology shines in two areas; Letting recoil sensitive people shoot the thumper without fear, and aiding in shear controllability of the shotgun.
It’s hard to argue that heavy recoil reduces ones ability to control a weapon, and mitigating the recoil helps the shooter stay on target. This is the point behind every rifle muzzle brake and ported competition pistol.
The Knoxx recoil reduction stock is indeed a gadget, but unlike so many… this one actually works.
On top of that, it has passed the ‘Carteach0 Gorilla of Doom Destruction Testing’. In plainer words, I attempted to break the stock in some very unreasonable ways. By simply pulling it apart with my bear hands (pun intended), and even beating it against a range bench (shotgun won, bench lost).”

“I can shoot power point slugs all day long without injuring my shoulder..
before i put this stock on, I literally couldn’t get through 10 rounds before wanting to switch to bird shot..
I’m NOT kidding it makes that much of a difference…this is a MUST for ANY shotgun..”
“This product is amazing. I’m a small woman who can now shoot full 3″ Magnum Slugger loads with one hand!!! AMAZING! There is almost no felt recoil what so ever and target reacquisition is incredibly fast.
I’d highly recommend this product to everyone.”
Home Defense Shotguns: Mossberg 500

“There is a lot of bullshit out there in the home defense shotgun arena. A lot of money can be made in the plastic tactical whizbang market, and it leaves the newbie wondering if the shotgun itself is really a necessity if he has all that extra junk to throw at an attacker.
The truth is, a combat shotgun needs very little to be a devastatingly effective weapon, and they can be bought on the used market very cheaply. There is no reason for any home not to have one.
I’m going to dispense with the crap and keep things simple.”

Home Defense Remington 870
Posted by Jack Sinclair in Remington, Warrior Tools on 3/Aug/2010 18:06
“On the list of firearms held as suitable for home defense, the nearly undisputed king is the 12 gauge pump action shotgun. Whether it’s the unmistakable noise of a round being chambered or the (rightly or wrongly) perceived massive stopping power, the big bore shotgun has a respected place in self defense.
The same things that make it suitable for police use make it desirable as a home protection weapon. Heavy firepower over a short range, coupled with an intimidating visual image and ease of operation.
In this article, a typical 12 gauge pump action shotgun will get a simple conversion to a home defense weapon. In this case, a Remington 870 Express, but any decent quality hunting shotgun can be drafted to house duty with a few changes.”

Home Defense Shotgun Project

The Remington 870 Express Project

For home defense the Shotgun may be legitimately argued to reign supreme especially down a short hallway, or across the Boudoir. Multiple pellet loads like the Remington Reduced Recoil Buckshot, or even a simple “Dove” or trap load, will accomplish their task awfully decisively. The vast majority of the resultant semantic debate involves “stopping” power and ammunition interchangeability/versatility.
…The total cost for this Home Defense project shotgun was less than many of the packages offered for Home defense, Tactical shooting use, and still allows quick conversion for the option of politically correct “legitimate sporting” purposes.
