Gates: the fight against corruption needs to be Afghan-led
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News on 2/Sep/2010 18:03
“KABUL — U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday that while the fight against corruption must be led by Afghans, the U.S. is working on new ways to prevent millions of American dollars flowing into the nation from underwriting bribery and graft.
Gates spoke to reporters in the Afghan capital with President Hamid Karzai, who complained about the tactics of two Western-backed anti-corruption units that recently arrested one of his top aides on suspicion of bribery, likening them to heavy-handed Soviet tactics.”

Foreign and Afghan troops have repelled pre-dawn attacks on two bases in east Afghanistan from Taliban insurgents wearing US military uniforms.
Major Patrick Sheba, from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Kabul said at least fifteen insurgents were killed at one base and six at another.
The attacks targeted the US military’s Forward Operating Base Chapman and Forward Operating Base Salerno in Khost province near the eastern border with Pakistan, where coalition forces have been stepping up operations against a resurgent Taliban.

Afghan Elemetary Education: For Soldiers
From Wired’s Danger Room
Right now, only 18 percent of those 243,000 cops and grunts have more than a Kindergarten-level ability to read. Which means they’ve got major trouble doing everything from keeping track of their gear to following a battle plan to getting paid, the general in charge of the NATO training effort says.
“We’re talking about giving them anywhere from between a first grade-level education to about a third grade-level education. For many back in America, that’s really hard to comprehend. And I understand that. It was for me, too.â€
Why do we have to find this information on a technology website? Why can’t the news networks do this kind of reporting? Why can’t the president explain that this is why it is taking so long for that backward country to pull itself out of the 3rd century?
Faith: Two-legged dog that learned to walk upright inspires veterans with debilitating war injuries
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Warriors on 22/Aug/2010 22:36
Faith is no ordinary dog. The labrador-chow mix was born missing one front leg, with the other so badly deformed that it had to be amputated when Faith was still a puppy.
Veterinarians suggested putting her down but Faith’s owner, Jude Stringfellow of Oklahoma City, instead taught the dog to walk on its hind legs.
Since appearing on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 2006, Faith has toured veterans hospitals in the U.S. to inspire servicemen injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, Faith is set to travel to the U.K. to greet wounded British soldiers returning from the war in Afghanistan.
“Faith seems to inspire these young men,” Stringfellow tells Britain’s Sun. “It’s very emotional watching them respond to her. She shows what can be achieved against great odds.”

Next target of the US military: “Taliban is the home team here.”
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News on 22/Aug/2010 13:38
“As Lt. Col. Peter N. Benchoff prepares for an assault next month into the birthplace of the Taliban, he doesn’t sugarcoat the hurdles his troops face in this crucial swath of southern Afghanistan.
“Security sucks. Development? Nothing substantial. Information campaign? Nobody believes us. Governance? We’ve had one, hour-long visit by a government official in the last 2 1/2 months,” the battalion commander says. “Taliban is the home team here.”
“Here” is 116 square miles (300 square kilometers) of Zhari, a district just west of Kandahar through which the insurgents funnel fighters, drugs, explosives and stage attacks into the city.”

“Afghans, while not necessarily fond of the Taliban actions, do not seem to see huge differences between Taliban and government control. In fact sometimes they prefer the former as the Taliban can be better at governance and creating working relations with the population, largely because the government is so incompetent and corrupt. “Even though the enemy was firing from just 10 feet, Roland immediately climbed out of the relative safety of his armored vehicle and started attacking enemy fighters in a nearby wadi, or dry streambed.
He and his fellow soldiers killed two of the enemy and cleared the rest of the wadi of enemy attackers, all while under fire from snipers. Their actions meant the enemy was no longer a threat to his unit’s rear flank.
