How Suppressors Work

Silencers are continually a hot topic of debate between gun owners and gun control advocates. The debate usually starts when asking what exactly we should call these devices.
The term “silencer” is really a colloquial term for firearm suppressors, and one of the most misleading aspects of the whole debate. Contrary to the term, “silencers” do not completely silence a firearm.
National Hearing Org Supports Suppressor Reform

In a letter sent at the end of May, the Academy of Doctors of Audiology, vouching support for “evidence-based practices in the delivery of audiovestibular care,” endorsed the Hearing Protection Act (H.R. 152/S.401) to improve access to suppressors. Holding that at least 7.5 million Americans hunt with a firearm each year and another 19 million regularly participate in target shooting, the organization recognized that “Firearm users are at high risk of developing NIHL (noise-induced hearing loss).”
Hearing Association Supports Suppressors

On October 28th, the National Hearing Conservation Association sent its new position paper on firearms suppressors to the American Suppressor Association. The paper, in short, recognizes the important role that firearm suppressors play in reducing hearing loss associated with firearms and endorses the Hearing Protection Act, which would eliminate the current antiquated and overly complicated process for acquiring suppressors and instead use the same instant background check system that is used for almost all firearms.

What if a cheap, reliable method of preventing a common, but serious injury were available and ready for the market? As an ear surgeon who has seen hundreds of patients with irreversible noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), I would welcome it with open arms.

Etymotic’s BlastPLG earplugs are designed to safeguard troops from long-term hearing damage without compromising their “situational awareness.”
… Remember that scene in Black Hawk Down where a soldier literally goes deaf because his buddy is shooting a giant machine gun right next to his head? The movie played it for laughs, but military hearing loss is no joke. According to high-end audio company Etymotic Research, “an alarmingly high percentage of deployed soldiers” sustain permanent hearing loss and tinnitus.
Earplugs are the obvious solution, but you can’t exactly stay frosty on patrol when you’ve got foam jammed in your ears blocking everything out. Etymotic’s EB15 BlastPLG earplugs attempt to square the circle by electronically attentuating sudden blast sounds while letting normal decibel levels through — or even enhancing them.
The $450 price tag makes sense when you consider that the EB15 is a state of the art hearing aid and earplug at the same time.
