Mexico Drug Cartels use Gory Videos to Spread Fear
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Threat Watch on 6/Aug/2010 02:00
http://www.borderlandbeat.com/2010/08/mexico-drug-cartels-use-gory-videos-to.html
“Powerful drug cartels are increasingly using gruesome videos of executions and interrogations to intimidate their rivals, police and an already terrified public in Mexico’s vicious drug war.
In one video, a man with a black eye is tethered to a chair in his underwear and appears to be strangled to death with a tourniquet by his captors. There is a “Z” scrawled across his chest, for Zetas, a spinoff of the Gulf Cartel.
In another video, a man is slowly beheaded with a knife.”
Seems somehow familiar…where have we seen this tactic before…?
Saddam Hussein’s right-hand man, Tariq Aziz: US is “leaving Iraq to the wolves”
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News on 6/Aug/2010 01:54
“Saddam Hussein’s right-hand man, Tariq Aziz, has accused Barack Obama of ‘leaving Iraq to the wolves’ by pulling out combat troops from the country.
Iraq’s former deputy prime minister said the United States would destroy the country if it pressed on with the policy of withdrawing combat forces to concentrate on the war in Afghanistan.
The late dictator’s henchman said that he had been initially encouraged when Mr Obama was elected president, because he thought he was going to correct some of former president George Bush’s ‘mistakes’.

WikiLeaks and the Afghan War

On Sunday, The New York Times and two other newspapers published summaries and excerpts of tens of thousands of documents leaked to a website known as WikiLeaks. The documents comprise a vast array of material concerning the war in Afghanistan. They range from tactical reports from small unit operations to broader strategic analyses of politico-military relations between the United States and Pakistan. It appears to be an extraordinary collection.
Tactical intelligence on firefights is intermingled with reports on confrontations between senior U.S. and Pakistani officials in which lists of Pakistani operatives in Afghanistan are handed over to the Pakistanis. Reports on the use of surface-to-air missiles by militants in Afghanistan are intermingled with reports on the activities of former Pakistani intelligence chief Lt. Gen. Hamid Gul, who reportedly continues to liaise with the Afghan Taliban in an informal capacity. Read the rest of this entry »
Mexico’s Juarez Cartel Gets Desperate

“This report is republished with permission of STRATFOR”
By Scott Stewart
On Aug. 3, the U.S. Consulate in Juarez, Mexico, reopened after being closed for four days. On July 29, the consulate had announced in a warden message that it would be closed July 30 and would remain closed until a review of the consulate’s security posture could be completed.
The closure appears to be linked to a message found on July 15, signed by La Linea, the enforcement arm of the Juarez cartel. This message was discovered at the scene shortly after a small improvised explosive device (IED) in a car was used in a well-coordinated ambush against federal police agents in Juarez, killing two agents. In the message, La Linea claimed credit for the attack and demanded that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and FBI investigate and remove the head of Chihuahua State Police Intelligence (CIPOL), who the message said is working with the Sinaloa Federation and its leader, Joaquin “El Chapo†Guzman Loera. The message threatened that if the intelligence official was not removed by July 30, La Linea would deploy a car bomb with 100 kilograms of high explosives in Juarez.
The deadline has now passed without incident and the consulate has reopened. Examining this chain of events provides some valuable insights into the security of U.S. diplomatic facilities as well as the current state of events in Juarez, a city that in recent years has experienced levels of violence normally associated with an active war zone. M-22 stress testing
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Training, Training Tools on 3/Aug/2010 19:00
“Following in the best time honored Carteach0 tradition of monkey curiosity coupled with the destructive ability of a small boy, testing of the ISSC M-22 continues. This time, a torture test involving a big stack of rimfire ammunition, and the noticeable lack of a cleaning kit. 500 rounds of function testing in one range visit, without cleaning.
Overall impressions of the M-22’s function during the extended run? Pretty good. Not perfect, and not flawless, but better than most other .22 autos might have done. In fact, better than any other .22 pistol in the Carteach0 armory just now. It’s entirely possible a quick shot of CLP every few hundred rounds, with a cursory wipe down, might be all that’s needed to keep the pistol chugging along like Thomas the Train.”

Los Zetas vs CDG battleground spreads to Piedras Negras.
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Threat Watch on 3/Aug/2010 18:43
“The bloody battles between Los Zetas and the Cartel del Golfo (CDG) for control of the Tamaulipas plazas in la Frontera Chica (Reynosa, Miguel Aleman, Camargo and Guerrero) and Nuevo Laredo are now spreading west to the Piedras Negras, Coahuila area.
All these cities and towns face the Rio Grande and South Texas and together with the Ciudad Juarez-El Paso plaza are major conduits for the trafficking of drugs and humans north into the Mid-Western and East Coast areas of the U.S..”

Montreal: Veiled women breeze through security

“OTTAWA – Transport Minister John Baird said a video posted to YouTube showing veiled passengers boarding a plane without showing their faces at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport was “deeply disturbing.â€
The video, filmed July 11 and posted last month by a British traveller, purports to show a man presenting passports to an Air Canada check-in clerk for himself and four women, two of whom have veils covering their faces, two of whom do not.
The clerk does not check to see the faces of the veiled women, and all five board flight AC 864 from Montreal to Heathrow.”

Study ties civilian deaths to attacks on US forces
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Threat Watch on 2/Aug/2010 20:27

“WASHINGTON — Each time U.S. or NATO forces accidentally kill Afghan civilians, insurgents and their sympathizers typically retaliate with six additional assaults on foreign forces over the next six weeks, researchers using newly declassified NATO data conclude.
A new study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research supports the prevailing view of counterinsurgency strategists who believe civilian casualties help Taliban recruiting drives. The study found that attacks on foreign forces increase slightly even when the insurgents are to blame for the deaths of non-combatants.
“Our results show that if counterinsurgent forces in Afghanistan wish to minimize insurgent recruitment, they must minimize harm to civilians despite the greater risk this entails,” says the study, to be released Tuesday through the Washington-based New America Foundation.”
