CSAT Advanced Patrol Tactics Class

From: Officer.com

Two years ago, in the summer of 2006, I attended my first training class taught by MSG Paul Howe, USA Retired. Howe taught proper rifle shooting positions, transition drills, and laid out a baseline of skillsets that every rifleman should be able to perform on demand. Howe expertly taught the fundamentals of basic rifle shooting in addition to briefing the class on weapon maintenance, gear placement and preparing for medical emergencies. I took so much away from the class, that I immediately started looking forward to my next training class with Howe.

In 2006, Paul Howe operated under Triple Canopy’s training division, but now he is on his own and works out of his CSAT (Combat Shooting and Tactics) facility in Nacogdoches, TX. The CSAT facility has on-site lodging for up to 24 students, a classroom, and an extensive range facility.

Bolt Gun vs. Gas Gun for LE Operations By Paul Howe

Bolt Gun vs. Gas Gun for LE Operations
By Paul Howe

From CSAT

I’ve have started to teach Urban Marksman (Sniper) courses to Law Enforcement personnel and wanted to address the issue of whether to use a Bolt Action Rifle (Bolt Gun) or Semi-Automatic Rifle (Gas Gun) for law enforcement applications. I think both have their pros and cons, but I want to go over them with you. Here are a few topics I wish to discuss:

  • Safety
  • Accuracy
  • Reliability
  • Training Time
  • Cost
  • Courses of Fire
  • Conclusions

While assigned to Special Operations in the 90’s, I served two years as a sniper. In the “old days,” I used a bolt action platform which fired a .300 Winchester Magnum cartridge and a gas operated platform, the .308 M1A magazine fed rifle. Since that time, a variety of both bolt and gas guns have hit the markets, from custom makers to major manufacturers. Read the rest of this entry »

From the GearScout blog:

The win for 300BLK is significant because it shows a use for the round outside of clearing rooms in unfriendly nations. 300BLK allows shooting sports competitors to use the lightweight and ubiquitous AR platform to compete effectively against heavier, higher caliber guns.

Sheepdogs

“Sheep can be controlled by the sheepdog for the same reason they fear the wolf – they are both predators.

The same relationships hold with the general population, the police, and the criminals. Most people are sheep, but you don’t have to be.

If you have the skills and attitude of a predator the criminals will leave you alone – because they will recognize you as a predator and there is easier game available.”

Gunfighting in the “Red Zone”

From: Officer.com

Red ZoneThe basic premise for The Red Zone, a one day class I recently attended in Camden, Tennessee was that during an actual life or death encounter there are far more things that should not be shot than those than should be.   Johnny Jihad is evil and can shoot up the landscape.  You are the good guy and cannot do so.  David Biggers former U.S. Army Officer and dedicated student of the gun led a dozen men and women through several drills designed to force the shooter to fire their defensive pistols in a deliberate and discriminating manner.

Up Close and Personal

The FBI compiles the most thorough statistics of actual gunfights in the United States. According to the 2009 stats, 19 of the 48 officers murdered in the line of duty where a firearm was used were 0-5 feet from their attacker.  We’ve all accepted the 21 foot average, but the truth seems to be that 21 feet is more likely to be the outer limit than the minimum.
