US woman fatally wounded in Mexico, dies in South Texas hospital

DALLAS — “A woman described by police as a U.S. missionary died at a South Texas hospital Wednesday after her husband brought her mortally wounded over a Rio Grande bridge from Mexico, where he said she had been shot in the head by gunmen in a pickup truck.
Nancy Davis, 59, died in a McAllen hospital about 90 minutes after her husband drove the couple’s truck against traffic across the Pharr International Bridge, according to a statement issued by the Pharr Police Department.
Her husband told investigators that he and his wife were traveling about 70 miles south of the Mexican border city of Reynosa when gunmen in a pickup truck tried to stop them. When the Davises sped up, the gunmen fired, wounding Nancy Davis in the head, the statement said.”

Beheaded and Castrated in Ciudad Altamirano

December 3, 2010, naked bodies of three decapitated and castrated men were thrown from a vehicle outside the offices of the newspaper “El Debate de los Calentanosâ€, just a few blocks away from PRI’s very own mayor, Juanchi Gustavo Adolfo Quiñones.
Along with the bodies, a message was left in green paper, “This is going to happen to all those who support La Familia Michoacanaâ€.

“US and Mexican police have discovered a tunnel used to smuggle drugs across the California-Mexico border and seized some 25 tonnes of marijuana.
The tunnel, equipped with ventilation, lighting and a pulley system, was 550m (1,800ft) long but just waist high.
Police said it connected a warehouse on the US side with one in Tijuana, the main gateway for drugs into California.”

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (AP) — “Four U.S. citizens were shot to death in separate attacks in the border city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexican authorities said Monday.
Chihuahua state prosecutors’ spokesman Arturo Sandoval said Edgar Lopez, 35, of El Paso, was killed Sunday along with two Mexican men when gunmen opened fire on a group standing outside a house.
On Saturday, a 26-year-old U.S. woman and an American boy were slain shortly after crossing an international bridge from El Paso. Giovanna Herrera and Luis Araiza, 15, were shot to death along with a Mexican man traveling with them just after 11 a.m., Sandoval said.”

Mexico / Texas Border lashed by gunfire and bombing

“Narco violence†was unleashed again in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas (bordering the Rio Grande River and the Gulf of Mexico). It surged almost simultaneously in the three main cities of this state, where there were attacks on government facilities, shootouts and innocent civilians wounded. In Matamoros (right across from Brownsville, Texas), a grenade was thrown at the military base of this border; four civilians and two soldiers were wounded. Neighboring businesses and a school were forced to shut their doors.
In Nuevo Laredo, shootouts and “narcoblockades†caused traffic chaos. A grenade was also thrown at a police facility, and yesterday afternoon stolen trucks and cars were used to block streets while rival gangs shot at each other. One of the blocked streets was where the U.S. Consulate is located.
And just outside Reynosa (right across from McAllen, Texas), a military convoy and a group of men in light trucks engaged in yet another shootout.”

Press records show that murders of women in the Ciudad Juarez area have taken place this year as follows: 16 in January, 9 in February, 28 in March, 15 in April and 17 in May. June closed with 29 victims, July with 25 cases and August ended with 41 violent deaths. The number for September was 44, a new record. October has already had 28 assassinations of women in 19 days. The 23 year old woman whose body was found abandoned on a street in Juarez just a couple of days ago died after a guitar string was wrapped around her neck and then was twisted until her head was severed.
While in fourteen years, from Jan. of 1993 to Dec. of 2007, there were 427 women murdered there, this year there have already been 252 such cases.”

Texas National Guardsman slain in Ciudad Juarez

“The Texas National Guard today has confirmed that a man murdered in Ciudad Juarez this Wednesday, Jose Gil Hernandez, 22, of El Paso Texas, was an off-duty private first class assigned to the Headquarters Battery 3rd Battalion, 133 Field Artillery.
Gil Hernandez and another man, Rafael Ramirez Reza, 43, were gunned down from a moving vehicle by an unknown group of armed men as they spoke outside of a home in the colonia Revolucion Mexicana in south Juarez. Another man, Manuel Galindo, 19, survived the attack and was hospitalized.”

“An alleged plot by a Mexican drug cartel to blow up a dam along the Texas border — and unleash billions of gallons of water into a region with millions of civilians — sent American police, federal agents and disaster officials secretly scrambling last month to thwart such an attack, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
Whether or not the cartel, which is known to have stolen bulk quantities of gunpowder and dynamite, could have taken down the 5-mile-long Falcon Dam may never be known since the attack never came to pass.”

Municipal Official, Son Murdered in Ciudad Juarez

“A municipal commissioner and his son were murdered over the weekend in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, prosecutors said.
Rito Grado Serrano and his son, Rigoberto Grado Villa, were killed at their house in Ciudad Juarez, located across the border from El Paso, Texas, on Saturday night.
Several gunmen went to the house after 8:00 p.m. Saturday and opened fire on the 59-year-old Grado Serrano and his 37-year-old son, the Chihuahua state Attorney General’s Office said.”

Texas: Falcon Lake Killing Blamed on Blunder by Cartel lower-level Operatives

“BROWNSVILLE — A global intelligence company Wednesday said the death of U.S. citizen David Michael Hartley on Falcon Lake was a case of mistaken identity in a turf war between rival drug cartels.
Hartley, who was shot during a Sept. 30 sightseeing trip to the Mexican side of the binational reservoir, was shot by Zeta cartel enforcers because he was mistaken for a spy of the rival Gulf Cartel, according to the report by STRATFOR, and Austin-based think tank specializing in intelligence and international issues.
The report goes on to say Hartley’s body likely was destroyed as Los Zetas went into “damage control†mode and that the lower-level operatives responsible for the unauthorized strike against him now are on the Zetas’ hit list.”

Lead Mexican investigator Rolando Armando Flores Villegas was hunting for the men who killed a U.S. citizen, a Texas man who was jet-skiing on Falcon Lake, in Texas.
The Investigator’s decapitation is a ‘message to White House’: Mexican drug cartels are declaring that the U.S. ‘no longer controls border’.
“The lead Mexican investigator hunting for an American man who disappeared after he and his wife were ambushed on Falcon Lake has been beheaded, a Texas lawmaker claimed today.
The severed head of Rolando Armando Flores Villegas was delivered to the Mexican military in a suitcase, Aaron Pena said today.
His wife Tiffany has told police she and her husband were ambushed by pirates while jet-skiing on the popular lake on September 30.
They shot her husband in the head, she claimed. She tried to rescue him but was forced to abandon his body when the pirates opened fire at her.
His body still has not been found.”

Violence in Mexico: not simply “a country at war”

“Among all the talk of beheadings, bodies burned in acid, and hangings from bridges, there are a few missing pieces of context. Such as the fact that Mexico’s murder rate in 2009 was actually lower than it was in 1999. Or that the murder rate in Yucatán is comparable to that of Montana and Wyoming. Or that Washington, D.C.’s murder rate is nearly quadruple that of Mexico City’s.
Violence in Mexico is intense, but it is also highly localized along the borders, and in Michoacan, Guerrero, Sinaloa, and Zacatecas. This is because most violence is related to competition among drug gangs for exclusive access to production and transit routes.
But rather than focusing on these causes of violence, most U.S. media simply portray Mexico as a “country at war.†I think that comparisons of Mexico with Pakistan as a country “on the verge of becoming a failed state†are ridiculous. I think that Hillary Clinton’s description of drug cartel violence in Mexico as an “insurgency†is both irresponsible and frightening (in terms of its foreign policy implications).”

“It looks like you can get whatever guns you want in Mexico. Face it, if they have the network in place to get drugs from Central America and meth ingredients from Asia, the cartels have the network in place to get whatever weapons they want, from wherever they want.
Maybe if the people of Mexico were armed they wouldn’t have to cower beneath a corrupt government and criminals. Until the people down there are armed you’ll keep licking both of their boots.”
