Ignorant Congressman Doesn’t Understand Guns, Bullets or the Purpose of the Second Amendment

From The Journal News:

The only people who should have access to these bullets are law enforcement and the military. There is no conceivable reason for anybody else to need access to a handgun round that can pierce body armor. It is our responsibility to do whatever we can to keep law enforcement safe – to protect them while they protect us. And when the gun industry fights to keep ammunition like this on the street, we must stand up.

Hunters and law-abiding gun owners have no need for a compact, semi-automatic firearm with ammunition that punches through body armor. Deer don’t wear Kevlar. Yet over and over again, we hear the gun industry lobby arguing to ensure that civilians have access to cop-killing bullets.

Why do police need armor piercing bullets? How many crimes have been committed by people wearing body armor? Every .30 caliber rifle round can pierce soft body armor. If you are truly against “armor piercing ammo” then you should want all rifle ammunition banned. Hunting is a false argument, the second amendment never mentions hunting. At the time of the War of Independence the citizens of the colonies were just as well armed as the Redcoats. There were even towns that had their own armories stocked with cannons.

Senator Rubio Introduces Law To Protect Gun Businesses

From Sen. Rubio:

“Operation Choke Point is an attempt by the Obama Administration to weaken 2nd Amendment rights in America, which enable people to protect themselves and their families,” said Rubio. “We must stop this administration’s effort to target private industries and the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens.”

From NRA-ILA:

Sen. Rubio’s bill followed Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer’s (R-Mo.) re-introduction on February 5 of the Financial Institution Customer Protection Act. This legislation would institute numerous reforms to bring more transparency and accountability to federal oversight of banks, all aimed at preventing the sort of unchecked abuse of discretion at the heart of OPC.

NY Sheriff’s Deputy Turns Into Fascist

This is what happens when you give the government power over you. Police officers like this disgrace the profession. Police are there to serve the citizens. The citizens are not the enemy.

P.S. Note to cops everywhere: Act as though you are being filmed, because you are.

Update: The officer has been arrested, resigned and is now facing assault charges.

Judge Says AR-15s Not Covered Under Second Amendment

The case of Kolbe v O’Malley, stems from the Maryland law that severely restricted the sale and possession of AR and AK rifles. From the decision:

Upon review of all the parties’ evidence, the court seriously doubts that the banned assault long guns are commonly possessed for lawful purposes, particularly self-defense in the home, which is at the core of the Second Amendment right, and is inclined to find the weapons fall outside Second Amendment protection as dangerous and unusual.

First, the court is not persuaded that assault weapons are commonly possessed based on the absolute number of those weapons owned by the public. Even accepting that there are 8.2 million assault weapons in the civilian gun stock, as the plaintiffs claim, assault weapons represent no more than 3% of the current civilian gun stock, and ownership of those weapons is highly concentrated in less than 1% of the U.S. population.

Under this logic if only three percent of the public exercised their right to speak their minds and criticize their government, that would not be covered under the first amendment. Criticizing the government could be seen as dangerous and undermining it and if only a few people engaged in such criticisms it could be found that such speech is not protected.

An Open Letter to President Barack H. Obama by Gun Owners of America

Dear President Obama:

As Executive Director of Gun Owners of America, Inc., and Executive Vice President of Gun Owners Foundation, and on behalf of our over 300,000 members and supporters, I respectfully bring to your attention a matter that requires your immediate action.

The official White House website includes a page1 which purports to describe key provisions of the United States Constitution. With respect to the Second Amendment, the complete description of the Second Amendment on the website is as follows:

“The Second Amendment gives citizens the right to bear arms.” [Emphasis original.]

Even recognizing that the website attempts to present only a simple summary of provisions of the Constitution, the description is highly inaccurate, and should be immediately corrected so as not to mislead the American people as to the true nature and scope of the Second Amendment. There are two separate problems with the White House website. Read the rest of this entry »

An Anti-Gun Bill Too Strong For California

From TheRightToBear.com:

According to the authors of the bill, AB 1014 would help to create de-facto gun restraining orders. The bill would let police officers seize a weapon based solely off the testimony of an immediate family member or health care professional and hold it for up to a year without any due process being extended to the gun owner.

Expanding The Second Amendment

From Intellectual Conservative:

So how do we bring an 18th century Constitution written with sacred honor, into a 21st century world without honor, and get compliance with the Constitution, where officials who swear an oath to support and defend the Constitution actually do so? We do it like we do for everything else now. We amend the Constitution to include fines and prison time for not only non-compliance, but lack of active enforcement.

Second Amendment Cases To Follow

From Reason.com:

The Supreme Court hasn’t taken up any new Second Amendment cases since McDonald, but that doesn’t indicate a lack of interest. The Court receives thousands of petitions for review—or certiorari—each year, but it replies to only a few hundred. It has recently plucked a handful of Second Amendment cases from the submissions pile, asking for responses from the relevant parties.

Dropbox Talks Government Data Requests

From: Dropbox

Dropbox’s Government Data Requests Principles

We understand that when you entrust us with your digital life, you expect us to keep your stuff safe. Like most online services, we sometimes receive requests from governments seeking information about our users. These principles describe how we deal with the requests we receive and how we’ll work to try to change the laws to make them more protective of your privacy.

Be transparent:  Online services should be allowed to report the exact number of government data requests received, the number of accounts affected by those requests, and the laws used to justify the requests. We’ll continue to advocate for the right to provide this important information. Read the rest of this entry »
