New Software Designed to Prevent 3D Printing of Firearms

From ArsTechnica:

On Tuesday, Create it Real announced that in the coming months its software would include an option to find and block gun parts. When it detects a file that contains firearm parts, the software will shut down and disallow printing. Create it Real’s software will likely be licensed to 3D printer manufacturers for around “several thousand euros annually” and then bundled with a 3D printer sold to individual consumers.

AR-15: More Than A Gun

From WNCW:

There’s a lot of name-calling in the gun control debate. Gun control advocates are slammed as elitist, urban liberals who want to take everyone’s guns away. Gun rights people are accused of being paranoid rednecks who think the government is out to get them. And then there are the special labels reserved for people who love their assault rifles.

First-time Gun Buyer Study

The NSSF has released a new study on first-time gun purchasers and their reasons for buying a gun.

The top-ranking factors driving first-time gun purchases are home defense (87.3 percent), self-defense (76.5 percent) and the desire to share shooting activities with family and friends (73.2 percent). Women, in particular, are highly focused on personal defense and self-sufficiency.

Gun Confiscation During Katrina

This is one person’s experience during a terrible situation. From The Bang Switch:

Yes, some guns were confiscated in New Orleans, LA (NOLA) following hurricane Katrina, but it was nowhere near as widespread as some would have you believe. They were isolated incidents and the majority of those were done by out of town LEO and MIL.

What you are about to read are my personal experiences and recollection of events as I saw them. While not all-inclusive, I think they lend a fiar account of what really happened on the ground.

Illinois Mayor No Longer Supports Mayors Against Illegal Guns

From Rockford Register Star:

“Any doubt that I might have had in my opinions about concealed carry when I first came into office changed quickly as I became an elected official and became very familiar with the types of crimes we’re dealing with,” Morrissey said. “The focus should not be against law-abiding citizens.”

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday gave the state of Illinois an extra 30 days to lift its ban on concealed weapons.

Pink Pistols: Gay Gun Rights Group

Their website is mostly a list of press releases but they do have information on starting a local chapter. The organization is mostly focused on self defense and CHLs because gays have been specifically targeted in the past. It is no different than the sixties when blacks were targeted for beatings. The minority used guns to defend itself then and they are doing so now.

Louisiana Introduces Bill to Allow Lifetime Carry Permit

From Guns.com:

Prior to the passage of House Bill 265, Louisiana gun owners who wanted to carry a firearm for self-defense outside the home had to renew their concealed carry permit every five years and pay a fee of $125.  Now, though, assuming Gov. Bobby Jindal signs HB 265 into law, gun owners can purchase a lifetime CCW permit for $500 provided they agree to undergo firearm training and education classes every five years.

Brits Want Handgun Ban Reconsidered

From Guns&Ammo:

Rounding up a list of six ideas proposed by readers—including term limits on Parliament members, a flat tax and even a ban on spitting in public—is a repeal of the U.K.’s ban on private handgun possession, a result of the Firearms Act of 1997.

The reasoning sounds awfully familiar: “After all, why should only criminals be ‘allowed’ to possess guns and shoot unarmed, defenceless citizens and police officers?” wrote user Colliemum.

Colorado Gun Laws Violate Constitution and ADA says David Kopel

From Westword.com:

“The ADA requires state and local governments to make accommodations for disabled people, particularly in regard to major life activities,” he says. “And many disabled people have less ability when they’re attacked in their home to retreat to a point of safety or get behind cover from which they can change a magazine. They may have less mobility, or some might have only one arm, for example.

“So it’s more difficult for them to change magazines than do other people — and therefore, even if the magazine ban were constitutional in general, which we argue it is not, the people with relevant disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations to larger magazines.”

5th Circuit Says No Handguns for 18-20 yr olds

From SFGate.com:

…the court said that the Second Amendment does not confer a right to carry weapons beyond the home, and therefore the law was within the Legislature’s authority.

What!? The Second Amendment doesn’t allow a person to carry a firearm beyond the home? What world are those justices living in? At 18 a person can join the military and vote for the leader of the free world, both of which impart far more responsibility on that person than carrying a firearm. This is another example, out of hundreds, of our inconsistent laws.
