“There is a lot of bullshit out there in the home defense shotgun arena. A lot of money can be made in the plastic tactical whizbang market, and it leaves the newbie wondering if the shotgun itself is really a necessity if he has all that extra junk to throw at an attacker.
The truth is, a combat shotgun needs very little to be a devastatingly effective weapon, and they can be bought on the used market very cheaply. There is no reason for any home not to have one.
I’m going to dispense with the crap and keep things simple.”

First, let’s ask ourselves why a shotgun is being used for home defense. Understanding that will help us make the ammunition choice. A shotgun has some advantages that make it desirable as a home defense weapon.
While any firearm powerful enough to use for defense will penetrate most walls, shotguns are slightly less likely to over penetrate.
A shotgun has the ability to fire a shell with multiple projectiles, increasing the likelihood of a solid hit and thus of stopping the threat. Some say the ominously large bore and unique sound of the action tend to make bad guys choose another activity… one far away from you and your family.”

Home Defense Remington 870

“On the list of firearms held as suitable for home defense, the nearly undisputed king is the 12 gauge pump action shotgun. Whether it’s the unmistakable noise of a round being chambered or the (rightly or wrongly) perceived massive stopping power, the big bore shotgun has a respected place in self defense.
The same things that make it suitable for police use make it desirable as a home protection weapon. Heavy firepower over a short range, coupled with an intimidating visual image and ease of operation.
In this article, a typical 12 gauge pump action shotgun will get a simple conversion to a home defense weapon. In this case, a Remington 870 Express, but any decent quality hunting shotgun can be drafted to house duty with a few changes.”

Glen Rhodes: shot point blank in the chest

“I was shot point blank in the chest Friday the 13th of July 2007, the bullet entered near the front edge of my left armpit about 4 in. to the left of my left nipple and about 2 in above it.
The bullet traveled through my left lung destroying about 30% of it then the bullet nicked my aorta and heart sack it then ricocheted of of the inside front of my ribcage.
It then tore through my diaphragm leaving a 3 in by 2 in hole in my diaphragm. From there it tore through my stomach destroying 3 acid ducts and causing me to lose about 20% of my stomach.
From there the bullet nicked my liver and spleen then it traveled through the back third of my spinal cord canal from about the middle of T11 on my left side to about the middle of T12 where it exited my spinal canal and traveled about another inch to my right parallel with the skin of my back and came to rest.
The bullet was a Speer Gold dot 9mm that was fired from a Glock model 17.
This was all caused by a fellow soldier who was being stupid and playing with his personal handgun.
Now I have a few rules that I make damn sure are followed around me…
#1 When a firearm is cleared everyone in the room checks it not just the handler.
#2 Do not put a magazine in your weapon without alerting others around you. (physically stick your finger in the chamber area and make sure that there is not possibly a round, this is used as a double check. first look then feel.)
#3 Pay attention to barrel awareness, flagging (accidently or purposefully crossing someone with your muzzle) around me will defiantly get someone a “boot camp ass chewing” and possibly shot.
#4 No matter how trained and experienced your with weapons you can still screw up. (I find that sometimes people with more experience can be at a higher risk of messing up due to becoming lax with their firearms handling.
#5 Always keep yourself and others around in check about safety and have them keep you and each other in check as well. (If someone corrects you listen to them don’t just blow them off and possibly get mad about being corrected, listen to them.)”

Montreal: Veiled women breeze through security

“OTTAWA – Transport Minister John Baird said a video posted to YouTube showing veiled passengers boarding a plane without showing their faces at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport was “deeply disturbing.â€
The video, filmed July 11 and posted last month by a British traveller, purports to show a man presenting passports to an Air Canada check-in clerk for himself and four women, two of whom have veils covering their faces, two of whom do not.
The clerk does not check to see the faces of the veiled women, and all five board flight AC 864 from Montreal to Heathrow.”

Study ties civilian deaths to attacks on US forces

“WASHINGTON — Each time U.S. or NATO forces accidentally kill Afghan civilians, insurgents and their sympathizers typically retaliate with six additional assaults on foreign forces over the next six weeks, researchers using newly declassified NATO data conclude.
A new study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research supports the prevailing view of counterinsurgency strategists who believe civilian casualties help Taliban recruiting drives. The study found that attacks on foreign forces increase slightly even when the insurgents are to blame for the deaths of non-combatants.
“Our results show that if counterinsurgent forces in Afghanistan wish to minimize insurgent recruitment, they must minimize harm to civilians despite the greater risk this entails,” says the study, to be released Tuesday through the Washington-based New America Foundation.”

“A former member of Guyana’s parliament and another man were convicted Monday of plotting to blow up jet fuel tanks at John F. Kennedy International Airport, a plan that authorities said was meant to outdo the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and avenge perceived U.S. oppression of Muslims around the world.
Russell Defreitas, a former airport cargo handler, and Abdul Kadir, once a member of Guyana’s parliament, were convicted of multiple conspiracy charges.”

“PHOENIX — A sheriff in Arizona known for his anti-immigration policies says his office is investigating a report of a $1 million bounty on his head.
A spokeswoman for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says the report was relayed by the FBI and by a caller who told Fox affiliate KSAZ-TV in Phoenix that the threat was from a Mexican drug cartel. Phoenix is the seat of Maricopa County.
Lisa Allen says it wasn’t known whether the threat actually came from a drug cartel but authorities believe it was made using a disposable cell phone in Mexico.
Arpaio says it’s not unusual for him to receive death threats as sheriff and an outspoken advocate of immigration enforcement.”

Ciudad Valles: Gunmen in convoy of 8 vehicles kill six policemen

“Gunmen in a convoy of eight vehicles killed six policemen, a city worker and a civilian and terrorized the population in Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosi, during a string of consecutive attacks as the convoy crossed the length of the city.
Local media reported that the convoy entered the city between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Friday, July 30, and drove boulevard Mexico-Laredo Boulevard and arrived first at a Coca Cola bottling where they shot down and killed two state police officers without stopping.
Several blocks later the gunmen stormed a municipal police installation and opened fire, killing three policemen and a civilian worker. Another policeman died later that night in a local hospital of his wounds.
On Sunday, August 1, the Mexican Army officially took control of police duties in the city.”
US to end its combat mission in Iraq by the end of this month?

“…the United States is on track to end its combat mission in Iraq by the end of this month, transitioning from a military to a civilian-led effort.
Though Iraq is now grappling with political uncertainty five months after a parliamentary election, and with bomb attacks in Baghdad and other cities, the president and others in his administration are highlighting the coming formal end of the U.S. combat mission.
The president said 90,000 troops will have come home from Iraq by the end of August. He noted the United States is in the process of moving millions of pieces of equipment from Iraq, and continues to close or turn over military bases to Iraqi government troops.”

“WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is considering ways it could go around lawmakers to let illegal immigrants stay in the United States, according to an agency memo.
The internal draft written by officials at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services outlines ways the government could provide “relief” to illegal immigrants – including delaying deportation for some, perhaps indefinitely, or granting green cards to others – in the absence of legislation revamping the system.
It’s emerging as chances fade in this election year for a measure President Barack Obama favors to put the nation’s estimated 12 million illegal immigrants on a path to legal status, and as debate rages over an Arizona law targeting people suspected of being in the country illegally.”
