Anti-Lead Petition Rejected By Fish and Wildlife

In a surprise to many, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently rebuffed demands from a series of environmentalist groups to phase out the use of traditional ammunition and fishing tackle on public land.
The FWS, part of the Department of Interior, reports to Debra Haaland, a former Democrat lawmaker from New Mexico who was backed for her current position by well-known anti-hunting groups such as WildEarth Guardians and the HSUS. In 2022, the agency was presented with a 63-page petition from the Center for Biological Diversity – an activist organization that pro-gun groups have characterized as one that “fights against regulated sport hunting at nearly every opportunity” – to ban lead ammo and fishing gear on the more than 500 million acres of federal lands by 2024.

Hunting Increases During Lockdown

More people appear to be picking up hunting as a hobby during the pandemic. Hunting license sales for May are up compared to the same time last year, and Arizona Game and Fish say sales have stayed steady since then.
More Federal Lands Open For Hunting

The proposed rule would include big changes such opening Green Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin to hunting and fishing for the first time and opening of Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge in Wyoming to deer and elk hunting for the first time. Other facilities would see smaller expansions with the net result of some 1.4 million new acres of public land opened for access to sportsmen.
MN To Add Gun Safety To P.E. Classes

The omnibus environment and natural resources spending bill, SF 7, was approved by lawmakers last week by a large, bipartisan vote and presented to Walz. Included in the plan is $500,000 from the state’s game and fish fund for grants to school districts to increase firearms safety, trap shooting, archery, hunting, and angling activities in physical education classes.
Police Draw Guns On Open Carriers

Gun rights advocates are livid after Miami Beach Police on Sunday briefly detained a group of fishermen on a public pier over questions on their holstered handguns.
The anglers, members of Sunshine State gun rights group Florida Carry, are shown in a live-streamed video of the event being interviewed by responding officers who have their sidearms drawn. While the advocates, who were ultimately released after two hours, hold they were within their rights as state law allows for legal open carry while hunting or fishing, police feel they responded within guidelines.
