AG Floats Expanded Background Checks

From Reason:

Both proposals share the same problems as any other effort to expand the reach of background checks. First, the categories of prohibited buyers are irrationally and unfairly broad, encompassing millions of people who have never shown any violent tendencies, including cannabis consumers, unauthorized U.S. residents, people who have been convicted of nonviolent felonies, and anyone who has ever undergone mandatory psychiatric treatment because he was deemed suicidal.
Second, background checks are not an effective way to prevent mass shootings, since the vast majority of people who commit those crimes do not have disqualifying criminal or psychiatric records. Third, background checks, even if they are notionally “universal,” can be easily evaded by ordinary criminals, who can obtain weapons through straw buyers or the black market. Fourth, voluntary compliance is apt to be the exception rather than the rule, and enforcement will be difficult, if not impossible.

New Castle County Superior Court Judge Vivian L. Medinilla agreed with big box retailer Cabela’s that the lawsuit, brought by the Brady Campaign last year over the sale of a pistol that was later traded by a felon and used in a shooting that killed an area woman, and dismissed the case. Medinilla noted in her ruling that the gun control group, representing the family of slain 19-year-old Keshall “KeKe” Anderson, did not make their case.

Guns Continue Record Sales

From The Washington Examiner:

The FBI just reported that the number of gun sales background checks for May was the highest ever for that month, 1,942,677, a trend that will make 2017 the first or second highest year for gun sales.

The continued growth of gun sales is in stark contrast to some in the media and industry who feared that the election of President Trump would snuff out sales that in 2016 were driven in part by concerns Hillary Clinton would win and implement strict gun control and an assault weapons ban.

California Shooting Causes Spike in Gun Sales

From the Daily Democrat:

The gun dealers’ holiday season got off to a rousing start. State data show that sales transactions spiked on Black Friday — the traditional start of the holiday shopping season — to four times the average number for other November days.

That spike was roughly double the uptick in the days after Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, armed with two semi-automatic rifles and two semi-automatic handguns, killed 14 and injured 21 in a hail of bullets Dec. 2 at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino. All of their firearms were purchased legally in California, which has some of the nation’s strictest gun laws.

Black Friday Sets Gun Sales Record

From Examiner.com:

Last Friday’s gun sales activity overwhelmed the National Instant Check System and provided retailers all over the country with a very green “Black Friday,” but did it also provide government anti-gunners a clue about how to suspend the Second Amendment?

From USAToday:

The FBI fielded 154,873 calls, a roughly 20% increase from last year’s previous one-day record of 129,166, according to bureau records.

From Market Daily News:

Fueled by fears that the Obama administration will go after gun rights during a lame duck term, the FBI reported 154,873 background check requests on Friday – a 20 per cent increase on last year’s record total of 129,166 checks.

The number of guns sold could actually be double or more that figure because only one background check is recorded per sale even if buyers purchase multiple firearms.
