California Gun Show Ban Challenged
From The Truth About Guns:
Part of the post-Bruen anti-gun furies that were unleashed in California was a new law that did what the state had been threatening to do for years. Senate Bill 264, signed into law by the state’s Carnival Barker-in-Chief, Gavin Newsom, banned gun shows on all public property.
USA Today: Gun Activism Could Turn Into Extremism
From USA Today:
Gun shows like this have long been part of the connective tissue between mainstream conservatism and the American extremist movement. The vast majority of gun owners are law-abiding citizens, but experts and former members of the extremist far-right said a passion for gun rights often serves as a gateway to radicalization – one eagerly exploited by recruiters and leaders in the movement.Â
CA Governor Goes Attacks Gun Shows
From NRA:
The bill, S.B. 264, “prohibits officers, employees, operators, lessees, or licensees of the 32nd District Agricultural Association from entering into any agreement to allow for the sale of any firearm, firearm parts, or ammunition on property that comprise the [Orange County] Fair and Event Center, or properties in Orange County and Costa Mesa that are owned, leased, operated, or occupied by the District,†as reported by the NRA Institute for Legislative Action (ILA).
Gun Events Resume

Emerging from two months of COVID-19 uncertainty and stay-home orders, shooting sports competitions and firearm events are slowly coming back.
CA Cops Staking Out Nevada Gun Shows
From LA Times:
Ten special agents from the California Department of Justice were watching as a man walked out of the Big Reno Show and placed his purchases in his car.
The black Isuzu with California plates headed west on Interstate 80 into the Sierra Nevada, eventually crossing the Nevada state line. That’s when the California Highway Patrol pulled Vincent Huey over. Inside the vehicle, state Justice Department agents found 18 high-capacity magazines, some capable of holding 30 rounds, according to court records.
Republicans Spreading Bad Idea On Background Checks
From Firearms Policy Coalition:
On September 18, 2019, a purported “idea†document reportedly being circulated among Republican senators and congressmen was leaked to the media. The document, entitled “Idea for New Unlicensed-Commercial-Sale Background Checksâ€, is both frighteningly vague and callous in its disregard for the Second and Fourth Amendments, as well as the federalist principles that animate the Commerce Clause.
The document suggests that “many commercial sales are conducted outside of FFLs without any background check or record-keeping requirements.†This is either incorrect or uses a definition of “commercial sale†beyond the scope of common understanding. Present law requires anyone “engaged in the business†of selling firearms to acquire a Federal Firearms License. Incidental, intrastate transactions between private individuals are regulated by the states.
DEA Wanted to Spy on Gun Show Attendees
From The Wall Street Journal:
A federal agent proposed using license-plate readers to scan vehicles around gun shows in order to aid gun-trafficking investigations, according to an internal Justice Department email.
Justice Department officials said Tuesday that the 2009 proposal was rejected by superiors and never implemented. The email was part of a series of Drug Enforcement Administration documents describing how the agency is building a national database tracking the movements of vehicles in the U.S. The documents were obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union through a Freedom of Information Act request and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
