Armor Up: A Coalition Perspective on Personal Protective Gear
This FREE webinar will be on: December 8, 2010 9:00:00 AM EST
Presenters: Carl Thompson, Cameron Finch, Dr. Kelechi Anyaogu,
Body Armor is one of the most important pieces of equipment a soldier has and can mean the difference between life and death.
Amidst the heightened tempo of operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, body armor and personel protection equipment have attracted renewed interest. This interest has come from several sectors: military procurement, civilian defense production, operational units (regular and special forces), as well as command level strategists.
- Yet NATO and the US Military still face many challenges, including: The extremely high price of underperforming and obsolete technologies.
- The employment (or deployment?) of such systems in the field can have direct and immediate impacts on soldier endurance and performance.
- Aside from dollar cost per unit, the use of body armor exacts a certain physical toll—increased risk of heat exhaustion and reduced mobility and speed.
Body Armor in Action:
The first living Congressional Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam War, Staff Sgt Salvatore Giunta can attribute his survival to his personal protective gear. In Afghanistan Staff Sgt Giunta was shot in the chest while braving enemy fire to come to the aid of comrades and was saved by his ballistics vest.
Latest version of Medal of Honor used by Army for training – but does not name the enemy

“This past week marked the release of the latest version of Medal of Honor, a videogame that has come under a great deal of fire since it was revealed that in its newest iteration players would be able to assume the role of Taliban fighters and fire on American troops. After fielding protests and complaints, Electronic Arts made a last-minute decision to rename the terrorists in the game, calling them “an opposing force†instead of “the Taliban.â€
The controversy is hardly a surprise, given that the game addresses an ongoing conflict, a fight where moms and dads, brothers, sisters and friends are still in harm’s way. What is surprising is that playing a videogame where players can assume the role of terrorists is something that the U.S. Army not only understands, but actively develops and plays on a regular basis.”

Lone Star Medics – Medicine X
I’ve taken a grab bag of Tac classes and pretty much all of them were primarily about putting holes in bad guys, so I got to thinking diversifying a little bit with a medic class would be a good idea. No one really likes to think about themselves or their buddies getting seriously injured, but when the time comes, wishing it away is not going to do a lot of good. Thus getting a least some sort of basic medical education can go a long way which will be helpful outside of tactical situations as well. Having first met up with Lone Star Medics at Shotshow, I jumped at the offer to check out one of their classes this summer. Although I’m decent with a gun, my medical skill didn’t go too far past Band-Aids and fortunately the 2 day Medicine-X class fits that skill level quite well.

“Meet Tac Pro Shooting Center’s owner, Bill Davison. Bill tells us about his past, his experience, and what’s motivated him to become a firearms instructor.
Also, Ruger’s own, Ken Jorgensen, joins Bill as they meet with students one-on-one to discuss firearms, and what steps the students as well as you at home, can take when deciding which handgun will be right for you.
[This episode is] midway through the course with some of the biggest challenges still ahead. The students look back on their progress, and express their feelings for the new challenges that still lay ahead.”

Just remember, your sights are ABOVE that hole where the bullets come out. I have seen one shooter put a 5.56 round through a piece of angle-iron at point blank range (ouch) and another shoot a windshield-wiper off a mini-van with a 10mm pistol. Also, I don’t recommend popping your head out of the same location two times in a row. If you have ever done Force-on-force training you learn to put your sights on the spot the last place you took fire from and more often than not, you can get a head-shot within a second or two. Food for thought.

Press Release
Team SureFire Stands Tall on the Podium at USPSA Multi-gun Nationals
Fountain Valley, CA — SureFire, LLC, manufacturer of high-end illumination tools and tactical products, is proud to announce Team SureFire’s incredibly successful weekend at the USPSA Multi-gun Nationals. Women’s shooting captain, Maggie Reese, was crowned the female Open Division National Champion for the second time in a row, and every member of the team placed third place or above in their divisions.
“Last year’s championship was so incredible that it was hard to wrap my head around because it was my first win and just my second competition,” said Reese. “This year is just as exciting, but it’s also more satisfying because now I have a whole team to share it with.”
Reese, a Southern California native, just started shooting competitively three years ago. Now she’s a back-to-back national champion in her only two attempts. Reese signed on as SureFire’s female shooting captain only two months ago and now has won another national championship for one of the most dominant teams in the sport.
Mossberg’s New AR style 22LR

Mossberg is joining S&W and others in the AR style .22Â rimfire market with the introduction of thier Tactical .22.
Press Release
Introducing the Tactical .22 Autoloading Rimfires by Mossberg International
North Haven, CT – Mossberg International introduces the Tactical .22–an alternative firearm for those shooters and enthusiasts who want the look and feel of an AR-style .22 rimfire with an affordable price. With the rising costs of centerfire ammunition, the new Tactical .22 rimfires are a great choice for recreational shooters, as well as those searching for a cost-effective training platform.
The lightweight and fast-handling Tactical .22 parallels the look and feel of today’s AR-style rifle while being built around Mossberg International’s reliable .22 autoloader. Taking cues from their proven 702 autoloader, the Tactical .22 matches an 18†barrel to a quad rail forend allowing the operator to fit the rifle with lights, lasers or other tactical accessories. Two stock configurations will be offered in this series: a six-position adjustable and fixed stock. The six-position polymer stock adjusts the length of pull from 10-3/4†– 14.5†accommodating youth and smaller framed shooters up to adults. The fixed position stock has a standard 13†LOP. The Tactical .22 is integrated with an A2-style carry handle and an adjustable rear sight aligned with a front post sight. The Picatinny handle mount is included, allowing versatility in scopes and other optics while providing the clearance necessary to utilize the AR-style sights. Other features included with the Tactical .22 are sling mounts and a ten round magazine.
