AK vs. AR – Lone Star Lowdown

This has nothing to do with Alaska and Arkansas.

Voices From the Field: More Bang for the Buckby Paul Markel
The boom in black rifle (AR) sales naturally led to a boom in the sale of .223 Remington or 5.56x45mm ammunition. This was no big surprise to anyone as that is the most popular chambering for that rifle. What you had was thousands of new AR owners now added to the .223 gene pool. The days of paying three dollars for a box of Winchester white box .223 are gone and not likely to return.
There is little doubt that feeding these self-loading, centerfire rifles has become a pricey endeavor. They are enjoyable to shoot, hence we do a lot of it. Your budget might allow for 100 rounds shooting sessions or 500 round extended weekends. Regardless, it’s always good to get more bang for your buck.
It was with this in mind that I first acquired a S&W M&P15 carbine chambered in 5.45×39 Russian. The price of the Russian equivalent to our 5.56mm runs about half. Simply put, you can buy 1000 rounds of 5.45×39 for what you’d pay for 500 in .223 Remington. That’s training or practice ammo mind you, match grade and controlled expansion .223 Rem runs much high at about a buck a shot.

The importance of training

Training with the Shotgun for Home Defense
Posted by Jack Sinclair in Training on 7/Aug/2010 18:08
by Silver at Wolfesblog
“I’ve hunted with a shotgun for over 40 years, and I’ve kept one handy for almost that long just in case an intruder needed some persuasion regarding the wisdom of breaking into my house or apartment. I was trained to hunt by my father and other male relatives, but I had never been trained in the defensive uses of the shotgun.
That changed recently when I spent 2 full days at a professional firearms training center learning the theory and practice of close quarters combat with the shotgun and pistol.
The short version of this story is easy: if you plan to use any weapon in self defense, you need to train. Hunting, target practice, and home defense are utterly different. In a real defensive situation, your pulse will race, your hands will shake, and your fine motor skills will vanish. It’s much worse than the worst case of buck fever.
If you’ve practiced working under those conditions, you might have a chance. If all you’ve ever done, as I had, was target practice at the range and hunting, your odds of surviving a defensive encounter are greatly reduced.”

M-22 stress testing
Posted by Jack Sinclair in News, Training, Training Tools on 3/Aug/2010 19:00
“Following in the best time honored Carteach0 tradition of monkey curiosity coupled with the destructive ability of a small boy, testing of the ISSC M-22 continues. This time, a torture test involving a big stack of rimfire ammunition, and the noticeable lack of a cleaning kit. 500 rounds of function testing in one range visit, without cleaning.
Overall impressions of the M-22’s function during the extended run? Pretty good. Not perfect, and not flawless, but better than most other .22 autos might have done. In fact, better than any other .22 pistol in the Carteach0 armory just now. It’s entirely possible a quick shot of CLP every few hundred rounds, with a cursory wipe down, might be all that’s needed to keep the pistol chugging along like Thomas the Train.”
