TX Campus Carry Allowed
From Dallas Morning News:
An effort by three University of Texas at Austin professors to block the implementation of the state’s divisive campus carry law has failed, after a federal judge on Monday denied their request for a preliminary injunction.
Texas Attorney General’s response to the ruling:
“I am pleased, but not surprised, that the court denied the request to block Texas’ campus carry law. There is no legal justification to deny licensed, law-abiding citizens on campus the same measure of personal protection they are entitled to elsewhere in Texas. The right to keep and bear arms is guaranteed for all Americans, including students, and I will always stand ready to protect that right.”
Texas Campus Carry Goes Into Effect
From Reason:
A Texas law that affirms the right of students and faculty to carry guns on public university campuses went into effect today. Much has been made of the significance of the date, given that the University of Texas tower shooting—one of the most infamous school massacres in history—occurred exactly 50 years ago.

Rape Survivor’s Story Saves Woman

From Hot Air:
Obama commended Corban for overcoming a horrific event in her life, adding that his executive actions don’t make it harder for her to purchase firearms, and proceeded to mansplain to her how owning guns could lead to the owner becoming a fatality—an awful thing to say to a survivor of sexual assault, but that’s for another time. Flash-forward to the National Rifle Association’s Annual Meeting in May, Kristi McMains needed to meet Corban, as her story helped her save her life from a would-be robber that attempted to stab her.

D.C. Concealed Law Ruled Unconstitutional
From The Washington Post:
A federal judge ruled Tuesday that a key provision of the District’s new gun law is probably unconstitutional, ordering D.C. police to stop requiring individuals to show “good reason†to obtain a permit to carry a firearm on the streets of the nation’s capital.
U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon found that the law violates the “core right of self-defense†granted in the Second Amendment, setting aside arguments from District officials that the regulation is needed to prevent crime and protect the public.
Current Trends Of First Time Gun Owners
From The Outdoor Wire:
Today, I was told, “typical” customers may be male or female, but they’re far more likely to be looking for a small concealed carry handgun than a modern sporting rifle or a traditional hunting gun. And that “typical” customer already has a pretty good idea about what they’re shopping for – and that first choice sometimes came a a big shock to the staff members behind the counter.
As a general trend, first-time buyers seem to have baseline knowledge when it comes to potentially suitable products, but are generally lacking any sort of hands-on quality time with firearms. And they were universally looking for sources of quality instruction- a requirement for anyone seeking a North Carolina concealed carry permit.
300,000 Concealed Carry Holders In Wisconsin
From Townhall:
Wisconsin reached a major milestone this week: 300,000 of its residents are licensed to carry a concealed firearm. That’s eight percent of the state’s population. Of course, you have some liberals who feel that this trend is “alarming,†and that it leads to an increase in violent crime–despite the fact that such crime is at its lowest rates in nearly five decades.
Mississippi Becomes 10th State With Constitutional Carry
The Mississippi Governor signed the bill with a pistol on his desk.
From OutdoorHub:
On Friday, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed House Bill 786 into law, officially making his state the 10th in the nation to adopt permitless firearm carry. In addition, the bill will also give residents the right to carry firearms into houses of worship. With a holstered Glock on his desk during the signing, Bryant made his support for the bill and the Second Amendment crystal clear.
Adm. McRaven Doesn’t Want Students Carrying Guns
From The Daily Texan:
“I’m a big second amendment guy, you know; I’m a strong supporter,†McRaven said. “But my position today — I’m an educator. As I look across the students and the faculty and the administrators and the staff and their concerns that they have voiced to me about this creating an unsafe environment with more guns on campus, it’s hard for me to support campus carry when I see their concerns.â€
Veteran With CHL Saves Deputy’s Life
From The Austin American-Statesman:
“I’m alive today because of him,†the deputy, 23-year-old Dylan Dorris said Wednesday, reflecting on the events surrounding a disturbance call outside a Bastrop County gas station Jan. 16. “There are no words to explain it. He’s such an outstanding citizen. He’s here for our country, our community and you really feel the love.â€
Perkins’ actions caused the suspect to leave Dorris and flee, before he was detained and taken into custody by another deputy and Dorris shortly after.
Virginia To Revoke Concealed Carry Reciprocity With Most States
From The Washington Post:
Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring announced Tuesday that the commonwealth will no longer recognize out-of-state concealed handgun permits, part of a national push to circumvent legislatures opposed to tightening gun laws.
Herring (D) said 25 states have lax laws compared with Virginia, where a history of stalking, drug dealing or inpatient mental health treatment can disqualify someone from carrying a concealed handgun. The move is in step with actions governors and attorneys general are taking to address gun violence without going through Republican-controlled legislatures.
Detroit CHL Holder Charged With Recklessness For Shooting At Car Thief
From The Daily Wire:
Forty-six-year-old Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez heard screams in a Home Depot parking lot and saw a man jump into a car with stolen goods. Duva-Rodriguez pulled out her pistol and fired off two rounds into the escape car’s tires, flattening one of them.
From The Washington Post:
Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez thought she was doing the right thing when she pulled out her pistol and fired at a pair of shoplifters as they fled from a Home Depot near Detroit.
She wasn’t, at least in the eyes of the law.
On Wednesday, a Michigan judge sentenced Duva-Rodriguez to 18 months of probation and stripped the 46-year-old of her concealed gun permit.
NY Times: Self Defense is a Fantasy
From The New York Times:
This foolhardy notion of quick-draw resistance, however, is dramatically contradicted by a research projectshowing that, since 2007, at least 763 people have been killed in 579 shootings that did not involve self-defense. Tellingly, the vast majority of these concealed-carry, licensed shooters killed themselves or others rather than taking down a perpetrator.
Mass Killings That Were Prevented
From Volokh Conspiracy:
Backers of laws that let pretty much all law-abiding people carry concealed guns in public places often argue that these laws will sometimes enable people to stop mass shootings. Opponents occasionally ask: If that’s so, what examples can one give of civilians armed with guns stopping such shootings? Sometimes, I hear people asking if even one such example can be found, or saying that they haven’t heard of even one such example.
1. In Chicago earlier this year, an Uber driver with a concealed-carry permit “shot and wounded a gunman [Everardo Custodio] who opened fire on a crowd of people.â€
2. In a Philadelphia barber shop earlier this year, Warren Edwards “opened fire on customers and barbers†after an argument. Another man with a concealed-carry permit then shot the shooter; of course it’s impossible to tell whether the shooter would have kept killing if he hadn’t been stopped, but a police captain was quoted as saying that, “I guess he [the man who shot the shooter] saved a lot of people in there.â€
Anit-gun Group Encouraging “SWATTING” Of Lawful Carriers
From National Review:
Having failed for decades to achieve any of its broader aims, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) has decided to experiment with a new tactic: annoying peaceful gun owners into submission. “If you see someone carrying a firearm in public — openly or concealed — and have ANY doubts about their intent,†a recent missive from the group proposed, “call 911 immediately and ask police to come to the scene.†Thus did one of the nation’s leading “anti-violence†outfits casually mark 12 million people as targets.
