Wisconsin expected to expand gun owner rights

(Reuters) – “Wisconsin, one of two states in the nation that prohibits citizens from carrying a concealed weapon, is expected to reverse this law during the upcoming state legislative session, according to a local newspaper.

Only Illinois and Wisconsin forbid carrying concealed weapons. A Republican was elected governor and Republicans won majorities in both houses of the Wisconsin legislature in November, bringing many more supporters of gun rights to the state government.

“You’re going to see a concealed carry bill pass the Legislature, I have no doubt,” Chris Danou, a Democratic legislator from Trempealeau, Wisconsin, told the LaCrosse Tribune newspaper. “The question is what kind of bill it’s going to be.”

Draconian Gun Laws

Reason.com reports on a man who was sentenced to 7 years in prison because of New Jersey’s gun laws and a judge who refused to allow critical evidence into the trial:

Aitken was sentenced in August after he was convicted of felony possession of a handgun. Before his arrest, Aitken, an entrepreneur and owner of a media consulting business, had no criminal record, and it appears he made a good-faith effort to comply with New Jersey’s stringent gun laws. Even the jurors who convicted him seem to have been looking for a reason to acquit him. But the judge gave them little choice. Aitken’s best hope now is executive clemency. He is petitioning New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for a reprieve this week.

The Second Amendement Get Its Due

From Reason Magazine’s October issue:

The invalidation of handgun bans throughout the country, accomplished in the space of two years, was sudden and surprising even to those who have spent decades laying the groundwork. Take Alan Gottlieb, founder and president of the Second Amendment Foundation, which began backing Gura’s various gun lawsuits after Heller. Since founding the SAF in 1974, Gottlieb has been hosting academic conferences, supporting legal scholars and historians, and filing carefully targeted lawsuits in defense of gun rights. Still, he says, “six years ago if you had said [the gun rights community would] see two cases get to the Supreme Court and two victories, I would have said, ‘Not in my lifetime. Maybe in someone else’s.’ ”

President Forbids Sale of Korean War Rifles

This story comes on the heels of the EPA trying to ban lead ammunition. The South Korean government is trying to sell thousands of M1s and M1 carbines to U.S. citizens to raise money. Gun control advocates don’t want the transfers to occur:

“Guns that can take high-capacity magazines are a threat to public safety,” said Dennis Henigan of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. “Even though they are old, these guns could deliver a great amount of firepower. So I think the Obama administration’s concerns are well-taken.”

The State Department’s excuse was:

“The transfer of such a large number of weapons — 87,310 M1 Garands and 770,160 M1 Carbines — could potentially be exploited by individuals seeking firearms for illicit purposes,” the spokesman told FoxNews.com.

The problem is the federal government assumes the worst about the people who will buy these weapons. I doubt a single person who purchases one of these rifles will commit a crime with it. My guess would be that most will be bought by vets who actually fought in the war and collectors.

Elena Kagan will be a solid vote against the Second Amendment if confirmed

by Luke O’Dell, Director of Operations, National Association for Gun Rights

“Just a few days ago, Senator Graham (R – SC) voted with the gun-grabbers on the Judiciary committee for confirmation of Elena “not sympathetic to your gun rights” Kagan to the Supreme Court.

That kind of defeatist pandering makes me sick, especially when it’s clear that Kagan will bring an ardently anti-gun agenda to the Supreme Court.

Elena Kagan will be a solid vote against the Second Amendment if confirmed, but they don’t want the public to see that for themselves.

We know that:

– Kagan said she is “not sympathetic” to the right to keep and bear arms.

– Kagan supports gun licensing and registration.

– Kagan dismisses the notion that the Second Amendment deserves “unlimited protection against governmental regulation.”

– Kagan personally drafted an executive order for Bill Clinton that banned the importation of semi-automatic firearms.

On top of another Graham betrayal of conservatives, Indiana Republican Richard Lugar is planning to join Graham in support of Kagan’s nomination.

Make no mistake Lugar and Graham are complicit in selling out YOUR Second Amendment rights.”

How to Disarm America

This from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette is an oldie but goody. I like to trot this one out from time to time when people ask me “why so much politics”,  “Why do you feel the need to post and re-post every little political blurb about guns and the Constitution“? There is even a pretty good gun website where right on the home page banner it says ” No Politics, Just Guns”. Wouldn’t it be great if we didn’t have to worry about our freedoms? But if that was the case we wouldn’t need Sheepdogs or Warriors.  I could spend a lot more time drinking Scotch and smoking cigars and less time scouring the Internet and Old Media looking for the next threat vector. Until that day, we remain as always.  Now here from 2007:

Disarm America? Here’s how
We’re swamped with guns, but if we want to get rid of them, there is a way to do it
Sunday, April 29, 2007

The tragedy at Virginia Tech, with a mentally disturbed person gunning down 32 of America’s finest — intelligent working people with futures ahead of them — puts once again into focus for Americans the phenomenon of an armed society.

Dan Simpson, a retired U.S. ambassador, is a Post-Gazette associate editor (dsimpson@post-gazette.com).

The likely underestimate of how many guns are wandering around America runs at 240 million in a population of about 300 million. What was clear at Virginia Tech is that at least two of those guns were in the wrong hands. When people talk about doing something about guns in America, one of the points that comes to the fore is, “How could America disarm even if it wanted to? There are so many guns out there.” Today I want to address the question of “how” — if we decided to. Since I have little or no power to influence the “if” part of the issue, I will stick with “how.” Read the rest of this entry »

SD Gov Signs Firearms Freedom Act into Law

From: Dakota Voice

The South Dakota Legislature recently passed SB 89 which declares “exempt from federal regulation any firearm, firearm accessory, or ammunition manufactured and retained in South Dakota.”Now, a little more than a week later, South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds has signed the bill into law.

The bill is the latest of many crafted in states across the country in the last year which re-assert the Tenth Amendment rights of the states which have been carelessly trampled by the federal government for decades.
