Colleges Can Apply For NSSF Grants
To encourage collegiate target shooting at both varsity and club levels, NSSF is inviting schools to apply for a total of $300,000 in grants to be awarded through its Collegiate Shooting Sports Initiative. “Interest among college students in target shooting and firearms safety is growing at schools nationwide, and NSSF grants are helping to support the programs in which students can participate at whatever level they choose,” said Zach Snow, NSSF manager of shooting promotions. NSSF has awarded more than $650,000 to 75 colleges to help establish, expand and sustain shooting clubs and teams. Grant applications are available at www.nssf.org/CSSI/grants.
More Insanity From the “Gun Ban” State
Democrats (surprise!) in the California state legislature want to make a law to restrict the purchasing of ammo. They also want a law to force the reporting of any purchase over a thousand rounds, to the federal government. You can find the text of the law here. More info on the idiots who proposed the legislation here.
Would anyone let this happen if they were proposing such restrictions on speech? The only time a person can be charged on what they say is when it is blatantly obvious that the person acted recklessly and negligently. That is exactly what happened in Colorado only the perpetrator used weapons. The tool should not be the focus of the crime, but the manner in which the tool was used. If someone is murdered with a butcher knife, we don’t try to ban knives, we punish the person for murder. We don’t try to ban alcohol (we tried that once) when a drunk driver kills someone, again we punish them because they were negligent. The busy bodies in government should focus on people and personal responsibility, not the inanimate objects that the people use.

6th Circuit: No Warrant Needed to Track Cell Phones
From the EFF:
In what can only be described as a results-oriented opinion, the court found Skinner had no reasonable expectation of privacy in the cell phone location data because “if a tool used to transport contraband gives off a signal that can be tracked for location, certainly the police can track the signal.” Otherwise, “technology would help criminals but not the police.” In other words, because cell phones can be used to commit crimes, there can’t be any Fourth Amendment privacy rights in them. If this sounds like an over-simplistic description of the legal reasoning in an opinion we disagree with, the sad reality is that the court’s conclusion really did boil down to this shallow understanding of the law.

Top U.S. General: We Don’t Know Why Afghan Troops Are Killing Us
Posted by Gary in News, Threat Watch, Warriors on 23/Aug/2012 17:43
From: Danger Room
During the past several weeks, Afghan forces have turned their guns on the U.S. troops that mentor them with increasing frequency. The Afghan troops have killed at least 40 U.S. and allied forces this year, the most since the war began, and Karzai’s government insists the blame lies with Pakistani infiltrators, not Afghans themselves. Allen diplomatically said he was “looking forward to the Afghans providing us with the intelligence†they’re using to reach that conclusion.

Gun Legislation In Progress
-
URGE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE TO VETO SB 1315 . . . NSSF is urging all California sportsmen, retailers and firearm owners to contact Gov. Brown’s office and urge him to veto SB 1315, which would repeal the current state preemption over local laws affecting the manufacture, sale, possession or use of Airsoft, BB or pellet guns in the County of Los Angeles and in any city located within the county. SB 1315 would allow each local government to adopt its own different local ordinances and set a dangerous precedent that could spread to the rest of the state and to all firearms as well. Please contact the governor and urge him to veto SB 1315.
- PRO-GUN REFORM LEGISLATION MOVING IN MICHIGAN . . . Last week, the Michigan Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation to repeal Michigan’s “permit-to-purchase” (HB 5225) and the state’s registration requirement for handguns. HB 5225, along with companion bills HB 5498 and HB 5499, seeks to make substantive changes that will benefit federally licensed retailers and their customers. NSSF is urging you to please begin contacting your state senator and ask him or her to support HB 5225, 5498 and 5499.
SB 249 Defeated in California
From NSSF News:
VICTORY ON SB 249 IN CALIFORNIA . . . In response to overwhelming grassroots opposition from law-abiding gun owners and California’s firearms industry members, SB 249, which would have resulted in the unconstitutional confiscation of lawfully purchased rifles, was pulled from committee last week. Since no action was taken and the deadline passed on Friday evening, the bill is effectively dead for the year. Congratulations to everyone who responded to NSSF’s legislative alerts and radio ad and called their California state legislators to oppose SB 249. Without your efforts, this victory would not have been possible.
NSSF President Re-appointed to Wildlife Hunting Heritage Conservation Council
NEWTOWN, Conn. — Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack today named Stephen L. Sanetti, president and CEO of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), to serve a second term on the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council (WHHCC). Sanetti is one of 18 people to be appointed to the council, an advisory group established in 2010 that will help to promote and preserve America’s hunting heritage for future generations.
“I am honored again to be named to this council by Secretary Salazar and Secretary Vilsack,” said Sanetti. “I look forward to working with the other distinguished appointees to secure the successful future of America’s hunting and recreational shooting sports heritage. I commend Secretary Salazar and Secretary Vilsack for continuing this council and its important work.” Read the rest of this entry »
California Tries to Ban More Guns
Posted by Brian in Law, News, Threat Watch on 21/Aug/2012 08:24
From NRA-ILA:
Senate Bill 249, as amended, would make a small but profound change to the definition in state law of what constitutes a detachable magazine for a semi-automatic firearm. By doing so, as many as one million semi-automatic rifles (with a “bullet button†or other magazine locking device), which were legally sold in California over the last twelve years, would become illegal on July 1, 2013. If you’re one of the hundreds-of-thousands of Californians who purchased one of these modern sporting rifles (a centerfire semi-automatic rifle with a magazine locking device that prevents detachment of the magazine without a bullet or tool) since 2000, your firearm will have to be surrendered or may be confiscated.
