Confiscation By Another Name

The media should stop using absurdly lazy phrases like “mandatory gun buybacks.†Unless the politician they’re talking about is in the business of selling firearms, it’s impossible for him to “buy back†anything. No government official—not Joe Biden, not Beto O’Rourke, not any of the candidates who now support “buyback†programs—has ever sold firearms.

So how has that worked out? Well, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s conservative estimate, New Yorkers owned about 1 million “assault weapons” at the time the ban was passed. So the 44,000 that were actually registered are about 4 percent of the total. This noncompliance with the law is widespread and mostly open, but the police aren’t doing much about it.
I could give several more examples of such reporting. But the upshot is that gun owners are overwhelmingly ignoring the law—and the police are overwhelmingly looking the other way.
22 Washington Counties Refuse To Enforce Gun Law

The Sheriffs of Washington’s rural counties are increasingly pledging to not enforce the new gun control bill (I-1639) that was passed in November by ballot initiative, citing it as unconstitutional. 22 out of 39 counties make up the latest count, with more expected as the court battles ramp up across the state.

Roughly “100 people†showed up, including Sheriff Wheeler. Those assembled waved an American flag, a Gadsen flag, and sang patriotic songs. Wheeler said: “I took an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution and uphold the laws of Idaho. This seemed appropriate to show my support. I was going to make sure Mr. Arnold’s rights weren’t going to be breached.â€
I wonder why I haven’t seen this on the national news? Maybe because the media doesn’t want The People to get the idea that they can effectively nullify federal overreach just by saying “no”.
NY SAFE Act Registration Numbers Indicate Mass Non-compliance

Since New York’s SAFE Act gun control law went into effect in January 2013, a total of 23,847 people have applied to register their newly defined assault-style weapons with theState Police.
Those individuals have registered a total of 44,485Â weapons.
New York State has a population of just under 20 million.
SF Gun Laws Don’t Trump My Safety

If I lived in San Francisco, I would violate that law. San Francisco’s anti-gun ideology is simply not worth risking my family’s safety. I do not have confidence that — even with practice — my wife and older children would be able to unlock a safe as quickly as necessary, under extreme stress (nor am I completely confident that I could do it). In fact, it’s hard to see a clear downside to violating the law. Yes, there are criminal penalties for noncompliance, but San Francisco isn’t doing house-to-house searches for gun safes. It simply doesn’t have the resources to systematically enforce this law, and it never had any intention of systematically enforcing the law. Instead, it’s counting on the least dangerous gun owners in America (the law-abiding cohort) to voluntarily render themselves more vulnerable. I would dissent. In fact, I have dissented in other, similar jurisdictions in years past.

Three counties—Fulton, Albany, and Schenectady— were chosen in January to take part in the pilot program for pistol permit renewals. Five hundred “invitations,†as the state government dubbed them, are being sent to residents in each of the counties.
“I’m asking everybody who gets these invitations to throw them into the garbage—that’s where they belong,â€Â Fulton County Sheriff Thomas Lorey said at a meeting with Second Amendment supporters.

As the RSVPs in advance of the rally grew to over 6,000, the police – most who probably detest I-594 – decided not to enforce the law. The Washington State Patrol announced there would be no arrests for exchanging guns – not even for selling guns. Seim refused to obtain a permit to hold the rally, citing the right of people to peaceably assemble.
If you can choose when to enforce or not enforce laws then what is the point of having laws in the first place?
