How To End Mass Shootings Quickly

From James Gagliano at City Journal:

The era of patiently awaiting arrival of homogenous, highly trained tactical-resolution teams outfitted with special equipment and superior training is over. To borrow Martin Luther King’s exhortation, police in Uvalde should have recognized “the fierce urgency of now.”

Culture Is The Problem, Not Guns

From The Federalist:

Americans are losing interest in the purpose and community that faith and church offer, losing respect for the sanctity of human life, and losing sight of the notion that a higher moral good exists than immediate self-gratification. Instead, we live under a cultural ethic that idolizes the indulgence of selfish desires even up to the point of taking the life of another.

Feds Payout $127 Million After Failing To Follow Tips On Parkland Shooter

From The Daily Mail:

The US government has agreed to pay $127.5m to the relatives of 17 killed in a 2018 school shooting after admitting the FBI failed to follow up two tips that could have prevented it.

Federal officials confirmed the settlement with families of those murdered, as well as survivors, following the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, by former student Nikolas Cruz.

TX Supreme Court Dismisses Suit In Sutherland Springs Attack

From The Truth About Guns:

The Texas Supreme Court says survivors and relatives of those killed in a 2017 mass killing at a church can’t sue a sporting goods chain for selling the gunman the rifle used in the attack.

The court on Friday threw out four lawsuits against Academy Sports and Outdoors that alleged a San Antonio-area store negligently sold the gun to Devin Kelley in 2016.

Unserious Gun Proposals

From National Review:

The usual ghouls were on their usual soapboxes before the blood had even dried. “Background checks!” they cried. Federal authorities then revealed that the killer already had been denied during an earlier attempt to purchase a firearm; our background-check system works when we work it. Which we do not always do: Sometimes, sales are approved when they should not be, as the result of delays in the background-check system; when the authorities become aware that such a sale has been wrongly approved, they make no effort at all to recover the firearms. It just is not done. Why? Bureaucratic inertia.

Ignorant Republicans Support “Assault Rifle” Ban

From Bearing Arms:

Most Republicans would support legislation banning assault-style weapons, a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll found Wednesday — a finding that contradicts President Donald Trump’s claim earlier the same day that there’s “no political appetite” for such restrictions.
The poll found that nearly 70 percent of all voters would back such a ban. Support for an assault-weapons ban was higher, at 86 percent, among Democrats, who have been pushing for new restrictions on the firearms in the wake of two mass shootings over the weekend.

NZ Crime Boss Says They Will Keep Their Guns

From New Zealand Herald:

“Will gangs get rid of their weapons? No. Because of who we are, we can’t guarantee our own safety,” he told Stuff.
He admitted many of the gang’s estimated 1000 associates hold illegal firearms but says they should be trusted not to harm innocent people.

“It’s not in our culture to inflict harm on innocent people like what happened in Christchurch,” Fatu said.

Conn Court Rules Against Civil Rights

From Powerline Blog:

The Connecticut Supreme Court’s decision is not a good faith exercise of judicial judgment. The four-judge majority engaged in political activism by issuing an anti-gun ruling that is obviously wrong under the Constitution and federal law. It will be reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court. But there is a lesson here: liberals love to talk about the rule of law, but what they mean is rule by lawyers. Rule by lawyers who dictate policies that the people and their elected representatives don’t want, and that are likely to be at odds with the Constitution. This Connecticut decision is a prime example.

School Buys Hockey Pucks To Fend Off Shooters

From Reason:

A college in Michigan thinks the best way for students and professors to defend themselves in the event of a mass shooting might be to throw hockey pucks at the gunman.

To that end, Oakland University’s faculty union purchased 800 pucks for professors and 1,700 for students, according to NPR. Oakland Police Chief Mark Gordon described the hockey pucks as a “spur-of-the-moment idea that seemed to have some merit to it.”

Bump Stock Ban Coming?

From Reason:

CNN was the first to report the news yesterday evening, citing “officials familiar with the matter.” An administration official confirmed to The New York Times that the rule would be unveiled “in the coming days to weeks.” Under Trump’s new regulation, a source tells CNN, bump stock owners would have 90 days to get rid of the devices on their own or turn them over to authorities.

Education Is Power

From The Mercury News:

Do you want to reduce shootings? Educate. No young person I have ever known who has been taught proper gun safety and taught the seriousness of handling/owning a firearm has ever committed any criminal shooting. I teach Boy Scouts gun safety and marksmanship. Anyone is welcome to come when we have a class and I promise you will be impressed by how seriously Scouts as young as 11 take this.

Make firearms taboo and that is exactly what a young person will want to get their hands on.
