ATF “Tweaking” “Sporting” Definition For Ammo

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ classification of pistol grip only firearms with 14†barrels that fire shotgun shells and are over 26†in overall length as neither “shotguns†nor National Firearms Act “Destructive Devices†or “Any Other Weapons†has created a situation wherein the agency must either quietly save face or have it exposed that untold numbers of good faith gun owners currently legally possess firearms problematic for the government to allow. In order for that status quo to continue, ATF, in conjunction with certain members of Congress and lobbying interests, is working at “tweaking†its definition of the arbitrary “sporting use†term, insider sources tell Gun RightsExaminer. And with that will come a push to expand definitions to allow for further importation bans on certain types of presently legal ammunition.

The only people who should have access to these bullets are law enforcement and the military. There is no conceivable reason for anybody else to need access to a handgun round that can pierce body armor. It is our responsibility to do whatever we can to keep law enforcement safe – to protect them while they protect us. And when the gun industry fights to keep ammunition like this on the street, we must stand up.
Hunters and law-abiding gun owners have no need for a compact, semi-automatic firearm with ammunition that punches through body armor. Deer don’t wear Kevlar. Yet over and over again, we hear the gun industry lobby arguing to ensure that civilians have access to cop-killing bullets.
Police Challenge ATF in Bullet Ban

“Any ammunition is of concern to police in the wrong hands, but this specific round has historically not posed a law enforcement problem,” said James Pasco, executive director of the Washington office of the Fraternal Order of Police, the world’s largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers, with more than 325,000 members.
He told Secrets that the round used mostly for target practice “is not typically used against law enforcement.”
CA Bill To Require Ammo Registration and “Permit for Purchase”

SB 53 would require the purchasers of ammunition to register with the state Department of Justice (DOJ) prior to purchasing any ammunition. This registration would require the submission of fingerprints, a background check and fees to the DOJ. If passed and enacted into law, SB 53 would require the collection and reporting of personal consumer information and thumbprinting for all ammunition purchases throughout the state. It would also ban online and mail-order sales of all ammunition, including hunting and collectible ammunition. In addition, SB 53 would require anyone wishing to exercise their fundamental right to keep and bear arms to obtain a costly ammunition purchaser permit that must be renewed every two years.

Proposed Bill Would Mandate Better Accounting at the Pentagon for Ammunition
From USA Today:
The Pentagon would be required to modernize its accounting system for ammunition under an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that passed the House on Thursday.
The amendment, co-sponsored by Democrats Jackie Speier of California and Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, would require an authoritative source of data on the Pentagon’s $70 billion stockpile of conventional ammunition as recommended by the Government Accountability Office.

Man Arrested For Single, Used Shotgun Shell

Mr. Witaschek, a successful financial adviser with no criminal history, is the first known case of a citizen being prosecuted in D.C. for inoperable ammunition. Washington police and prosecutors have spent a year and a half trying to nail him for the possession of so-called unregistered ammunition.
Colorado Company Moving To Wyoming

Maverick Ammunition manufactures target-grade ammunition and ammunition for hunting. It also manufactures tactical-grade ammunition for use in law enforcement. The company’s product line includes well-known shooting sport brands such as Hornady, Nosler, Lake City and Berry’s, according to a statement released by Maverick Ammunition CEO Curt Perry.
The company is expected to employ more than 50 people. There will be full-time and part-time positions, ranging from entry-level manufacturing, to clerical and bookkeeping, to experienced warehouse and distribution managers, Perry wrote.
Update on Lead Smelter Closure

“Sierra uses no primary lead at all and never has, so we use nothing directly from this facility,†the company said in a statement on its website. “[W]e do not see any reason for alarm. We expect our supply to continue and keep feeding our production lines which are still running 24 hours per day to return our inventory levels to where they should be.â€
“No impact upon any cast bullet manufacturing operation whatever. We do not use virgin lead, which is what Doe Run provided,†Brad Alpert, operations manager for the Missouri Bullet Company, told TheBlaze in an email. “We use foundry alloy from major foundries derived from scrap sources, purified and cleaned to purity.â€
“The jacketed bullets companies (Winchester, Remington, Federal, et al.) use the same sources that we do,†Alpert wrote.
Ammo Prices to Increase Due to Pollution Regulations

According to reports from the National Rifle Association and Charlotte-based Ammoland.com, the primary lead smelter at Herculaneum, Mo., will close its doors at year’s end.
The smelter, owned and operated by the Doe Run Company, has been in existence at the same location since 1892. It is the only smelter in the country that can convert raw lead ore into lead bullion mined from large deposits in Missouri.

Hunting Calibers Hard To Find?
It’s not just .223 that is in short supply.
Shotgun loads for shot and rifled slugs remain easy to find. But reflecting a national trend, availability of rifle and handgun ammunition in Pittsburgh area sporting goods stores is spotty and inconsistent. Many shelves are empty. A clerk at one local store, who asked that he and the retailer remain anonymous, said customers are going from store to store searching for common calibers and sometimes not finding them.
