Open Carry: in the states where it’s legal, is Open Carry Provacative or Positive?

“OpenCarry.org was founded in 2004 by then Virginia residents John Pierce and Mike Stollenwerk to be a pro-gun Internet community focused on the right to openly carry properly holstered handguns in daily American life.
The idea to establish OpenCarry.org arose in Virginia where state law (now repealed effective July 1, 2010) actually required open carry at restaurants serving alcohol. In July, 2004, Fairfax County, VA police briefly appeared at the Reston, VA Champps restaurant to investigate a 911 call about patrons openly carrying holstered handguns. Mike was at Champps eating a steak and drinking a coke that night while openly carrying and he describes the police response as something Cesar might have said: “They came, they saw, they left.”
But then the Washington Post ran a series of very critical articles and scathing editorials attacking the practice of open carry. Reacting to this “news” coverage, gun owners in Virginia and across the United States naturally wondered about the law of open carry in the fifty states – but gun rights Internet resources at that time focused almost exclusively on “concealed” carry. Research soon revealed that state legislatures and courts have largely protected open carry rights since the time of our nation’s founding, and that most states require no permit to open carry.
So thanks to the Washington Post’s “sky is falling” hoplophobic coverage of the Champps non-incident, OpenCarry.org was born!”

In addition to being an invaluable “starting point” legal resource and discussion forum for gun owners, OpenCarry.org has grown to become the social networking portal for the open carry movement. Tens of thousands of “OCDO” registered members have already made a difference in their communities! Over the last 6 years, the open carry of handguns has become much more common and less controversial as open carriers’ friends, neighbors and local law enforcement discover that open carry is legal and wholesome. In fact a recent FBI report essentially concludes that criminals don’t open carry handguns.
Anthropologist Charles Springwood sums it up nicely when he commented that open carriers are trying to “naturalize the presence of guns, which means that guns become ordinary, omnipresent, and expected. Over time, the gun becomes a symbol of ordinary personhood.”
OpenCarry.org believes that “a right unexercised, is a right lost,” and increasingly gun owners are agreeing – it’s time gun carry comes out of the closet across America!

“A defensive carry weapon must work, must be there, and be big enough to do the job at hand.
My opinion? The largest reliable pistol you can carry, comfortably concealed all day, that is the way to go.

Oklahoma: Woman defends herself from robbers/rapists who broke into her apartment

“One gun isn’t enough.”
That was what Linda Smith (a pseudonym) was thinking after two thugs broke into her Oklahoma apartment. One was holding a weapon … at her throat, and the other was pacing back and forth while holding her purse and demanding her money and valuables. She screamed, and was told if she screamed again, she’d be dead.
She was doing as police recommend in robberies – comply with a robber’s demands. But her Lady Smith & Wesson .38 special, which she carries by permit, was hidden in her purse – and the purse was being held by one of the attackers.
Then the situation, suddenly, got much, much worse: One of the robbers demanded that she take off her clothes.
“Come on, what are you waiting for,” he told her as he started to yank on her sweatpants, trying to take them off.
Smith pleaded for her safety and distracted the attackers by telling them she would get her money, which was “in my purse.”
The robbers inexplicably allowed her to drop to her knees and crawl across the floor to her purse, which the second attacker had dropped.
She reached inside, and the first shot was clear of the muzzle and into the torso of one of the attackers before she even pulled the weapon clear of the purse. Four more shots followed shortly and, in the end, one of the attackers was dead and the second was hospitalized facing a murder rap for having participated in a felony in which someone died.
Smith, in an exclusive interview with WND, explained she comes from a family that believes in self-reliance and courage.
“I choose to carry a concealed firearm, because even though I am immensely grateful for the protection from our police departments, I realize they’re not God, so they can’t be everywhere at once.
“Deadly situations can happen in the blink of an eye,” she said. “If you are not proactive … you are a vulnerable target.”
Smith, an Endowment member of the National Rifle Association, said she’s carried a gun for almost half a decade, but never dreamed she’d be in a situation where she’d have to use it to defend her life. But she’s glad the training she’s had over the years kicked in at a time when it saved her from injury, or possibly much worse.
“Ironically, I thought I was really prepared,” she told WND. “I remember that night and saw my life flash before my eyes. Darreon Carter, the man who was attempting to rape me, had me pinned down to my couch, with a knife at my throat. I knew I didn’t have access to my gun. I thought to myself, I really need to have a firearm for my home, and directly on my person.”

David Jayquon Jakes of Smoaks, armed robbery suspect
“…At that time, a silver-colored sedan pulled up occupied by three individuals and a male subject, later identified as David Jayquon Jakes, 19, exited the back seat and pointed a large caliber handgun at one of the women.
The victims said Jakes was covering his face with a cloth of some type and started ordering her as he referred to her as “pretty lady.” At that time, the woman’s son-in-law stood up from behind his vehicle and she ran to her daughter as they took cover.
Her son-in-law was armed and drew his weapon and ordered them to leave several times. As Jakes turned and pointed his large caliber weapon, the son-in-law fired several rounds striking Jakes who then fell to the ground and dropped his weapon.
The two subjects in the suspect vehicle helped the wounded Jakes back into their vehicle and fired several rounds back at the victim and then drove away.
A short time later, the Colleton Regional Hospital staff notified the Sheriff’s Office that they just had an individual come in to their emergency room with several gun shot wounds.”

“The man who shot him recently returned from the Middle East as an Army Specialist and has a concealed weapons permit to carry his weapon.
Sheriff George Malone said he will not be charged since he acted in self-defense.”

In Canada and Britain, both with tough gun-control laws, almost half of all burglaries occur when residents are home. But in the United States, where many households contain guns, only 13 percent of burglaries happen when someone is at home.

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force.
If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that’s it.
In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.
When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.
The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single gay guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.
There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we’d be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger’s potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat–it has no validity when most of a mugger’s potential marks are armed.
People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that’s the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.
Then there’s the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don’t constitute lethal force watch too much TV, where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst. The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level.
The gun is the only weapon that’s as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn’t work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn’t both lethal and easily employable.
When I carry a gun, I don’t do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I’m looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don’t carry it because I’m afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn’t limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force.
It removes force from the equation…and that’s why carrying a gun is a civilized act.
