Gun Banners: What Happens If We Destroy The NRA?
From Slate:
If James succeeds, the court will direct her to find other groups who could take control of the NRA’s infrastructure, which could restart a national gun rights advocacy group. She would be bound by law to solely consider whether successor groups share the NRA’s values and are free from any taint of corruption. “The groups would have to be absolutely squeaky clean, but they could have really aggressive Second Amendment politics,†West said.
Though the NRA has defined the national gun rights movement for decades, it is by no means the only player on the scene. Rivals have grown in prominence in recent years. And many of the lesser-known groups are in fact much more extreme in their pro-gun stances, and closer to the far-right fringe.
Texas Rep Introduces Constitutional Carry
From Gun Owners of America:
“Earlier today, Rep. Biedermann said: ‘Our Constitution was written to ensure certain rights of all citizens. Everyone has the right to life and to protect that life from harm. No one should have to pay a fee or get permission from the government before being able to do so legally. I look forward to working with my colleagues to restore the rights of all Texans.’
California Facing Lawsuit From Gun Orgs
From The Truth About Guns:
Today, attorneys for plaintiffs including individuals, a Los Angeles firearm and ammunition retailer, Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), National Rifle Association of America (NRA), California Gun Rights Foundation (CGF), and Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC) filed a federal lawsuit challenging state and local policies and enforcement practices that violate Second and Fourteenth Amendment rights. A copy of the lawsuit can be found at www.firearmspolicy.org/brandy.
VA Law Could Ban Gun Parts
From Ammoland:
This passage could potentially ban parts used to repair broken rifles. Banning the transfer of these rifles to anyone other than the government would mean once the rifle breaks, it is useless. If the owner repairs their gun or sells it, they are committing a felony.
Gun rights groups from around the country expressed concern about the passage of HB 961 out of the committee. One of these groups is Gun Owners of America that has been fighting hard alongside VCDL in the Commonwealth to defeat the attack on gun rights. Senior Vice President, Erich Pratt, is dismayed the bill has gotten as far as it has.
GOA Continues Fight Against Bump Stock Ban
From Ammoland:
In particular, one appellate judge was very concerned that, in the future, the “ATF could choose to redefine ‘machine gun’ as including all semiautomatic weapons that can be modified with a device like a bump stock.â€
Of course, this is exactly the point that GOA has made in its briefs to the court. If the ATF can claim that a bump stock can turn an AR-15 into a machine gun, then the same can be said about rubber bands or belt loops.
Pro Gun Laws Continue To Be Attacked
From Bearing Arms:
On today’s Bearing Arms’ Cam & Co. Alan Gottlieb of the Second Amendment Foundation joins the show to talk about the growing threat to firearms preemption laws, which are currently being challenged as part of a coordinated assault by cities and gun control groups around the nation. While these challenges aren’t getting as much attention as Beto O’Rourke’s call for firearms confiscation, Gottlieb says the attacks on preemption pose a real threat to the right to keep and bear arms and shouldn’t be ignored by gun owners, even if they’re not drawing a lot of media attention.
Self Defense Tax
From Gun Owners of America:
Under provisions of the Pittman-Robertson Act (P-R), handguns are taxed at the confiscatory rate of 10 percent and ammunition, rifles and shotguns are taxed at an even more outrageous 11 percent. Enacted in 1937, P-R was originally levied at a rate of 11 percent on rifles, shotguns and all types of ammunition and in 1970, handguns were added and taxed at 10 percent.[1] Many gun owners are unaware they are even paying this tax because it is collected by manufacturers, based on the wholesale price of a firearm or ammunition. Don’t be fooled, it is built into the price you pay for a new firearm or ammunition; the manufacturers are not paying the gun tax, you are.
PA Law Challenged On Due Process
From Bearing Arms:
On July 3, 2019, Gun Owners of America (GOA) and its legal arm, Gun Owners Foundation (GOF) — in cooperation with local gun groups — filed an Amici Curiae brief with the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. The brief is supporting gun owners who had their constitutional right to keep and bear arms violated by Section 302 of the Pennsylvania Mental Health Procedures Act (MHPA).
Oklahoma To Be Next Constitutional Carry State?
From Gun Owners of America:
That whirlwind — Constitutional Carry — would make Oklahoma the 16th state in the country to recognize the right to protect yourself and your family without first getting the government’s permission. This would mean that nearly a third of the fifty states would be “Constitutional Carry†states.
Larry Pratt Is The New Voice Of Gun Owners
The NRA and Wayne LaPierrre have not, in my opinion, made a decent argument in favor of gun ownership. Larry Pratt has filled that void with a strong and clearly defined argument in favor of liberty. Below are some highlights.
