Emily Miller on Starbucks and Guns

From The Washington Times:

To be fair, Starbucks got dragged into this debate and never wanted to take a stand either way on the laws on the right to bear arms. Both the pro- and anti-Second Amendment groups have used the popular chain as a front line in the battle over gun control.

China’s Tyranny a Result of Gun Control

A former Chinese national discusses the issue in National Review Online:

Citizens were not allowed to have any guns or they would be put into prison, or worse. Chinese people were helpless when they needed to defend themselves. I grew up with fear, like millions of other children — fear that the police would pound on our doors at night and take my loved ones away, fear that bad guys would come to rob us. Sometimes I could not sleep from hearing the screaming people outside.

When it came to dealing with the Chinese government and police brutality, there was nothing we could do. They had guns, while law-abiding citizens did not.

Self Defense For Women

From the Loadout Room:

Knowledge and preparation are the two keys to protecting yourself from sexual violence.   The violence can come from a friend, stranger or  a twisted mix of both as the problem of date-rape continues to grow.

California Is Coming For Your Guns

The anti-gun bigots in the state of California continue to propose ludicrous laws that will make it harder for citizens to exercise their rights.

From Reason.com:

The piece detailed the California’s Department of Justice’s APPs (Armed and Prohibited Persons) program that sends armed agents to the doors of Californians “who at one time purchased firearms legally, but have since run afoul of the law.” It’s a first-in-the-nation program by which state officials cross-reference government crime databases. An agent might show up at the door of a person who legally purchased a gun, but was later deemed mentally ill or was convicted of domestic violence.

Mexico and the Arms Trade

From Free Republic:

It wasn’t sporadic.  It was continuous throughout the city.  For a country that bans guns I thought, how in the world did they get their hands on all these full-auto weapons?  Clearly what sounded like M16 fire was prolific along with 7.62 x 39 AK autos with a smattering of smaller caliber full-autos, most likely 9mm.  Gun fire can be heard in most American cities on New Years, but I’ve never heard full-auto weapons being fired, at least not in the San Diego area.

The next day I went into work and sat down with a trusted senior Mexican manager.  I looked at him and said, “I thought guns were illegal in Mexico.”  He chuckled and said, “So you stayed in town last night?”  As the conversation progressed, it became clear that guns are as common in Mexico as tamales at Christmas.  Everyone he knows, including himself, own at least one gun.  And, it matters not whether it’s a semi-auto or fully automatic, they’re all illegal, so why stop with semi-autos?  Though clearly illegal in the states in most instances, a lot of Mexicans have more firepower in terms of military weapons than we can only dream of owning here.

This article first appeared in 2009. The author describes how no one in Mexico is unarmed despite it being illegal to own a gun larger than .22.

Women Deciding To Arm Themselves

From ABC News:

Nationwide gun ownership is at an all time high and now a record 23 percent of women say they own a gun, according to Gallup polls. The surprising spike has spawned a cottage industry from pink assault rifles to bling-ed out revolvers, like the one tweeted by Kim Kardashian.

Minimum Age For Conceled Carry Is Not 21 In Every State

I was surprised to see this map from Dustin’s Gun blog that shows a state-by-state comparison of the minimum age for a concealed carry permit. A few states allow 16 year-olds to carry but I disagree with that low age. I do think the minimum age should be no greater than 18 when those same people are allowed to vote and fight in the military.

Two Intruders Shot Dead In Houston

From Tea Party Economist:

This is the kind of welcome that should greet all such intruders in America, every time. It should greet all such intruders, all over the world, every time. If there were more greetings like this, there would be fewer intruders like this.

Illinois Legislature Overrides Veto, Approves Concealed Carry

From the AP:

Both chambers of the Legislature voted to override changes Gov. Pat Quinn made to the bill they approved more than a month ago. Even some critics of the law argued it was better to approve something rather than risk the courts allowing virtually unregulated concealed weapons in Chicago, which has endured severe gun violence in recent months.

Mounties Confiscate Canadians’ Guns

The Mounties went into homes evacuated due to flooding and took people’s guns.

From NationalPost.com:

“We just want to make sure that all of those things are in a spot that we control, simply because of what they are,” said Sgt. Brian Topham. “People have a significant amount of money invested in firearms … so we put them in a place that we control and that they’re safe.”
