Who Do Gun Laws Punish?
From The Objective Standard:
Granted, some people misuse guns: In 2011 an estimated 11,101 of 15,953 homicides involved a gun, as did 19,766 of 38,285 suicides, as did 851 of 122,777 accidental deaths. But such misuse is not grounds for outlawing guns. Legitimate laws—those that protect individual rights—do not punish law-abiding individuals for the crimes of others, nor do they restrain the psychologically healthy because of the suicidal, nor do they restrain the responsible because of the irresponsible.
Constitutional Carry Bill In Ohio
From Guns.com:
The measure, HB 178, eliminates the state’s concealed weapons license requirement and codifies the right of a person who is 21 or older and not otherwise prohibited from possessing a firearm to carry a handgun without first getting a CWL. The bill won the 7-4 approval of the House Federalism Committee this week.
NZ Puts Collectible Guns On Confiscation List
From Guns.com:
Several vintage rifles from yesteryear — some out of production for nearly a century– are on the list including the Remington Model 8, Winchester 1907, the M1 Garand, and various examples of the French MAS series. Rare Heckler & Koch wooden-stocked sporting rifles, like the HK 630 and HK 770, have likewise been targeted for destruction. Have a Mossberg 500 with a 6-shell tube? It’s on the list alongside the Beretta A300 and Benelli Super Nova.
New Zealand’s Council of Licensed Firearms Owners, or COLFO, a pro-gun group, has warned they may seek legal action. The group has stated that the proposed compensation for those forced to hand over their firearms to the government may be a sour deal for many.
Self-selection In The Gun Debate
From The Truth About Guns:
The biggest reason we don’t have an astronomical rate of gun deaths is simple: people generally choose the best option for their own circumstances without orders from the nanny state. This “self-selectionâ€Â contradicts the idea that we need to be micro-managed for our own safety.
As a result of self-selection, much of what the anti-gun lobby claims they want to accomplish has already been done individually by the people themselves at zero cost. No tax money expended, no freedoms restricted, no need for state-mandated mental health exams.years.
Gay Community Has Many Reasons To Be Pro Gun
From The Washington Post:
I don’t understand why the LGBTQ community is so hostile toward the Second Amendment. I’d like to ask my fellow gays to take a moment and consider this issue through a different lens. I long for the day when the gay community will galvanize its significant political might and work toward making practical changes that would let gays better protect themselves when laws don’t.
NZ Cop Admits Registration Necessary To Get Guns
From Bearing Arms:
Chris Cahill, with the country’s Police Association, said it’s not clear if this year’s budgeted funding for the buy-back would be adequate because New Zealand (like America) does not have an official gun registry.
“We really have no idea how many of these firearms are out there in New Zealand,†Cahill told the Herald. “Which really points to how bad our firearms legislation has been, that we have let this get out of control.â€
Handgun License Requirement Is Backdoor Registration
From Guns.com:
The legislation, backed by Dems in both the House and Senate, would encourage more states to adopt licensing schemes like Connecticut’s handgun purchasing law, which requires a special renewable permit to purchase any revolver or pistol. Dubbed the Handgun Purchaser Licensing Act, the bill was introduced by U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland and Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy of Connecticut along with U.S. Reps. Jahana Hayes, D-Conn and Jamie Raskin, D-Md.
AR Sales Increase Ahead of Washington Gun Law
From The Truth About Guns:
We’ve talked about Washington’s Initiative 1639 before. It puts a host of new restrictions on gun owners, including requiring a permanent waiver of their HIPAA rights before buying a handgun or semi-automatic rifle.
Ahead of this, Washingtonians are buying up everything they can get their hands on. It will be interesting to watch Washington going forward, as this is in many ways an unprecedented restriction. A number of lawsuits are already winding their way through the courts. This will be worth watching.
Easy To Get A Gun In Australia
From Bearing Arms:
How did the accused Darwin gunman, parolee Ben Hoffmann, get his hands on a shotgun and allegedly kill four people?
Likely with relative ease — according to the public health professor behind the world’s largest catalogue of evidence on gun violence, firearm law and gun control.
Bill Introduced To Sue Gun Manufacturers
From Bearing Arms:
The Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act aims to repeal federal protections blocking firearm and ammunition manufacturers, dealers and trade groups from most civil lawsuits when a firearm is used unlawfully or in a crime.
Your Safety Is More Important Than The Rules
From Bearing Arms:
“She said, ‘This guy’s going to come back and shoot the place up,’ †Jason Nixon said. He encouraged his wife to hide a pistol in her purse and take it to work — she had training and knew how to use it — but she didn’t want to break city policy forbidding employees from bringing weapons to work.
NY’s Insane Gun Laws
From Bearing Arms:
A 64-year-old Deerfield homeowner was charged with illegal firearm possession and arrested after he used a gun he’d inherited from his deceased father to kill two repeat burglars. Then upon his release from a jail a couple of days later, he found himself homeless because his house had been condemned.
Pennsylvania Strengthens 2nd/4th Amendments
From National Review:
Unless a police officer has prior knowledge that a specific individual is not permitted to carry a concealed firearm, and absent articulable facts supporting reasonable suspicion that a firearm is being used or intended to be used in a criminal manner, there simply is no justification for the conclusion that the mere possession of a firearm, where it lawfully may be carried, is alone suggestive of criminal activity.
Trump Considering Suppressor Ban
From Bearing Arms:
President Donald Trump said he’ll “seriously look†at banning gun silencers after last week’s mass shooting in Virginia.
“Well, I’d like to think about it,†Trump said in an interview with Piers Morgan on ITV’s Good Morning Britain. “I’m going to seriously look at it.â€
Biden Promotes Old “Assault Ban” Idea
From NRA-ILA:
This week the campaign website for presidential hopeful Joe Biden published what it called an “Education … Plan for Educators, Students, and Our Future.†Among its agenda items was to “[d]efeat the National Rifle Association†by “championing legislation to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines – bans [Biden] authored in 1994.†In other words, Biden would reprise a law that was widely recognized (including among gun control advocates) as a failure and the cause of his party losing control of Congress in 1994.
