Older Americans Denied Ability to Enlist

The House of Representatives voted down a resolution that would have allowed citizens who exceed the military’s age limit to enlist, even when they pass the physical.

From Military Times:

Broun, a 66-year-old Navy Reserve doctor, said the legal limit blocking enlistment for anyone over the age of 42 “seems to be an arbitrary policy” in an era when many older people are in excellent physical condition.

“There are people who want to serve and are physically fit,” he said. “There are some 20-year-olds who cannot run a mile.”

Off Duty Gamers

OffDutyGamers.com is a gaming site specifically targeted at military veterans. Here is how they think of themselves in their own words:

This site is for all the active duty military and prior service veterans who enjoy video games and the associated hardware but are easily annoyed with throngs of civilian ‘experts’ who seem to know more about the ‘military’ portion of today’s games than an experienced member of the military. This site is about delivering all the same news, reviews and sense of community coupled with our collective bond of service and unique point of view. This site is primarily for veterans, by veterans and aims to support our community.

The site reviews military games and is a meetup for military personnel who want to play online with other services members.

Why Surrender Is Never an Option

The Phases of Surrender

The first phase of surrender is failing to be armed, trained and committed to fight.  We are prepared to surrender when we are unprepared to resist.
The second phase of surrender is failing to be alert.  You must see trouble coming in order to have time to respond.  The warning may be less than one second but it will be there and it must be recognized and acted upon immediately.
The Third phase of surrender is giving up your weapons.
The last phase of surrender is up to the monsters who have taken control of your life and perhaps the lives of your loved ones.  The last phase of surrender is out of your hands.

Liquid Body Armor

From Guns.com:

The next generation of body armor might be liquid.  Both BAE Systems and the Army Research Laboratories along with the University of Delaware are working on turning shear-thickening fluids (STF) into body armor.  The concept of using the non-Newtonian fluids as a means to enhance armor while staying flexible at other times is not new but actually putting it into action is a separate and more difficult problem.

Afghanistan and the Long War

From STRATFOR:

By George Friedman

The war in Afghanistan has been under way for more than 10 years. It has not been the only war fought during this time; for seven of those years another, larger war was waged in Iraq, and smaller conflicts were under way in a number of other countries as well. But the Afghanistan War is still the longest large-scale, multi-divisional war fought in American history. An American soldier’s killing of 16 Afghan civilians, including nine children, on March 11 represents only a moment in this long war, but it is an important moment.

In the course of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, military strategists in the United States developed the concept of the long war. The theory was presented in many ways, but its core argument was this: The defeat of Taliban forces and the Iraqi resistance would take a long time, but success would not end the war because Islamist terrorism and its supporters would be a constantly shifting threat, both in the places and in the ways they would operate. Therefore, since it was essential to defeat terrorism, the United States was now engaging in a long war whose end was distant and course unknown. Read the rest of this entry »

Gear Set Up Tips for Plate Carriers

Brian Hartman and Sean Hendickson from Progressive FORCE Concepts talk a little about where you should locate magazine pouches on your plate carrier kit. One potentially life saving tip is to position your pistol magazine pouches on your belt in the same way you’d wear them without your carrier. This means you’ll be consistent in locating your pistol mags under stress rather than hunting for where you located them on your vest.

Secretive SEALs Moonlight as Movie Stars, With Navy’s Blessing

From: Danger Room

“It was done by real dudes so it actually looks real and in a lot of cases is real,” writes Danger Room pal Jim “Uncle Jimbo” Hanson, a retired Army Special Forces Weapons non-commissioned officer, who got an early peek at the film and loved it. “One of the best examples is when a couple of fast boats come to exfil them from a hostage rescue and the boat guys light up some bad guys and their pick up trucks with miniguns. Almost too beautiful for words.”

Clerk knocks out robber, makes him clean up his own blood.

“Mostafa Kamel Hendi, armed with what was later identified as a pellet gun, attempted to rob the We Buy Gold shop in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The store clerk, Derek Mothershead, punched him in the nose and knocked him out. While waiting for police to arrive, Mothershead handed Hendi a roll of paper towels and made him clean the floor of his own blood.”
