Sheriff Joe Arpaio ready for SB 1070 protests

“The sheriff of the most populous county in Arizona [Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio] says he’s “not going to put up with any civil disobedience” when the state’s new immigration law takes effect.

Arpaio says that if protesters want to block his jail, he’ll put them in it.

The Arizona law, which takes effect Thursday, requires officers enforcing other laws to check a person’s immigration status if they suspect the person is in the country illegally.

He says it’s “a crime to be here illegally and everyone should enforce” the law.

Pressure builds as ruling on Arizona bill SB1070 is just hours away.

“PHOENIX – A ruling on the implementation of SB1070 is expected in just hours.

In an interview on CNN Tuesday, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said she expected the decision at any time, but no later than Wednesday.

It is unclear how Judge Susan Bolton might rule in the multiple court cases filed against implementation of the law.

Brewer spoke openly on CNN about the controversial law, addressing concerns over the possibility of racial profiling. She explained that is not the intent of the law, saying she had similar concerns but is confident officers will not take the responsibility lightly.

SB1070 takes effect Thursday, creating a potentially volatile mix of police, illegal immigrants and thousands of activists, many planning to show up without identification as a show of solidarity.”

Gun Rights Blog Sued for Infringement

From: WorldNetDaily

A popular blog that has kept citizens abreast of how Americans successfully defend themselves from crime by being armed has been suspended while its organizers deal with a copyright infringement claim from a newspaper, the blog itself has announced.

David Burnett said in a statement his Armed Citizen site is closed for now, and its future will depend on what happens in the case.

The site was targeted in a federal court lawsuit filed by Righthaven LLC, which apparently is working on behalf of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

DISCLOSE Act: Warning from The National Association for Gun Rights

Harry Reid

Dear gun rights ally,

The fate of free speech is being debated in the U.S. Senate RIGHT NOW.

Harry Reid’s midnight skulduggery has the DISCLOSE Act on the fast track to passage TOMORROW afternoon.

That’s right; Harry Reid and his anti-gun allies in the Senate are scheduled to shred the First Amendment tomorrow at 2:45pm EST.

And unless the American people stand up and say NO, they will succeed.

Please, call your senators and ask them to vote against and publicly oppose the DISCLOSE Act.

As you know, the DISCLOSE Act was written to protect the anti-gun Establishment in Washington, D.C.

If passed into law, it could silence virtually every state and national conservative organization in the country, including the National Association for Gun Rights and any state level gun rights organization you belong to.

The DISCLOSE Act is a direct attack on your First Amendment right to petition Congress and mention legislation or voting records during the election season.

You and I both know that election season is the best time to hold politicians accountable for their anti-gun votes.

The DISCLOSE Act is designed to silence grassroots activists LIKE YOU and protect the Establishment politicians in Washington.

The DISCLOSE Act will affect every political organization you belong to, on any and every issue.

To make matters even worse, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has joined an unholy cabal of liberal special interests like the Sierra Club, the AARP and countless labor unions.

Together they’ve managed to gain exemptions from the onerous restrictions the DISCLOSE Act would lay on the rest of us.

I strongly encourage you to contact the NRA at 800-672-3888 and demand that they stop the backroom deals and come out strongly in opposition to the DISCLOSE ACT.

In fact, Capitol insiders say that a special relationship between Harry Reid and the NRA may be the driving force behind their exemption.

Reid is facing a very tough re-election race in Nevada and is relying on the NRA to paint him as a pro-gun candidate. If he’s held accountable for his anti-gun votes, he will almost certainly lose.

So making a deal with the NRA while simultaneously silencing all of the pro-gun groups who would take him to task is Harry Reid’s perfect political move.

And it seems to be working. The NRA has all but endorsed him (see the June 2010 issue of the NRA magazine, with flattering pictures and flowery praise of Harry Reid) and he’s scheduled a final vote on DISCLOSE for tomorrow.

We are right in the middle of this battle! Reid’s pulled every trick in the book to ram through the DISCLOSE Act.

But there is a chance we can stop this monstrous violation of our Constitutional Rights — if you ACT right now.

Please, call your senators and ask them to vote against and publicly oppose the DISCLOSE Act.

Tell them that any vote to restrict free-speech will be considered a vote against gun owners.

“HATE SPEECH” is free speech?

“HATE SPEECH” is free speech: The U.S. Supreme Court stated the general rule regarding protected speech in Texas v. Johnson (109 S.Ct. at 2544), when it held: “The government may not prohibit the verbal or nonverbal expression of an idea merely because society finds the idea offensive or disagreeable.”

Federal courts have consistently followed this. Said Virginia federal district judge Claude Hilton: “The First Amendment does not recognize exceptions for bigotry, racism, and religious intolerance or ideas or matters some may deem trivial, vulgar or profane.”

“Upholding the Law is not mistreatment.”

Within nearly every group in the US there is a range of responses to the issue of illegal immigration. Even groups that place a high value on mercy and compassion have differing views. Here’s the opinion of one evangelical:

“President Obama has said that nations “are not defined by our borders.” This is manifestly false. A definable and defensible border is precisely what defines a nation. Any third-grader looking at a globe can tell you where Mexico ends and the United States begins.

We agree that we should treat legal immigrants with compassion, in line with the time-honored precept found in the Old Testament. “You shall love him (i.e. the sojourner) as yourself” (Leviticus 19:34). I submit that America is doing a better job of embodying this precept than any nation on earth.

We naturalize a million immigrants a year, and grant legal entry to another million or so. We have the most generous, open-hearted, open-handed immigration policy on the planet.

In the last year for which figures are available, the U.S. granted citizenship to 230,000 immigrants from Mexico, more than than the next three countries of origin combined. Our borders and our hearts are hardly closed to Mexicans who are willing to play by the rules and knock on the front door rather than sneaking in through the back.

Leviticus 19:33 adds, “When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong.” Some seem to believe that deporting lawbreakers qualifies as mistreatment.

But upholding the law is not mistreatment. We do no wrong to the shoplifter by holding him accountable for his behavior. In fact, enforcing the law is the way government shows compassion for victims of crime. Compassion is misdirected if it is targeted toward lawbreakers rather than victims.

Where is the compassion for the residents of Arizona who are forced to cope with drug smuggling, drug-related violence, human trafficking, home invasions, kidnappings, and $2.7billion in annual costs imposed on them by illegals for education, welfare, law enforcement and health care?

There’s no way around the fact that my evangelical friends want to reward aliens who break the law. They want to guarantee them access to a pathway to citizenship, no matter how vigorously they try to deny it. They want illegal aliens, as a matter of policy, to have the option of choosing a path that will lead to citizenship if they jump through enough hoops.

We should instead deal with the 12-20 million illegals currently in the country through attrition, by making access to any taxpayer-funded resource – whether education, welfare, or health care – contingent upon proof of legal residency.

Enforcing our immigration policy need not break up families. The president sent spouses and children along when he deported the Russian spies, and we can do the same with every illegal alien. We do not want to separate husbands from wives, or children from parents, so our policy should be to repatriate entire families together to preserve family integrity.

If a member of a family has the legal right to remain in the U.S., he of course should be allowed to exercise that right. But then the family itself would be responsible for dissolving the family unit, not the United States.”

Former DOJ attorney blasts DOJ for failing to protect American soldiers’ right to vote

U.S. Department of Justice Building

“In the wake of the Department of Justice’s New Black Panther Party scandal, a second former DOJ attorney has now come forward, blasting the department for failing to protect American soldiers’ right to vote.

What’s even more alarming, the attorney claims, is that despite congressional mandates passed in 2009 to ensure military personnel overseas can participate in elections, the DOJ’s Voting Section is ignoring the new laws and may allow thousands of ballots to slip through the cracks uncounted in November.

… legal complaints, news stories and studies all showed dozens of states failing to give soldiers enough time to vote in the 2008 election – resulting in tens of thousands of soldiers’ mailed ballots that arrived too late to be counted, perhaps enough to swing, for example, Minnesota’s closely contested election of Democrat Senator Al Franken.”

81-year-old man charged with attempted murder for shooting thief – an illegal immigrant thief

Robert Wallace on 9News.

“The Robert Wallace case has all the trademarks of a justice-gone-awry tale.

When Wallace, an 81-year-old Wheat Ridge resident, saw two men trying to steal his trailer this past February, he opened fire, hitting one of the men in the head.

But the person busted in the shooting’s immediate aftermath was Wallace, for attempted murder, while the two suspects in the theft attempt remained free until last week.

The contrast between an elderly man defending his property, Gran Torino-style, against the actions of an illegal alien — and then being prosecuted for his actions — could hardly be more stark.”

The First Amendment takes a hit to placate Muslims? 4 Arrested in Dearbornistan, Michigan for talking to Muslims about Christianity.

Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, Michigan. "The center is a symbol of the sharp growth and advancement of our Muslim community," - Sayed Hassan Al-Qazwini, the spiritual leader of the Center

The four were passing out leaflets about Christianity in Dearborn, which has a large Muslim population. One of the missionaries was engaging in peaceful conversation with several Muslim youths, while the other three were videotaping the dialogue before they were all arrested on June 18.

Since their activities were carried out peacefully, State Representative Tom McMillin believes the missionaries were falsely arrested.

“This is the first step in a series of steps that the city of Dearborn is taking to placate the large Moslem population that they have there, and they don’t mind stepping on the constitutional rights of Christians to do that,” [McMillin said]

All four…plead not guilty today. They are represented by Robert Muise of the Thomas More Law Center, who points to the Constitution.

“If people are offended by the fact that they were preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to Muslims and trying to convert Muslims — well, guess what, we have a First Amendment,” Muise points out. “This is a free society. It’s not a police state.”

Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Law Center (TMLC): the missionaries’ free-speech rights were violated…no criminal laws were broken.

http://www.onenewsnow.com/Legal/Default.aspx?id=1083036

The point of sharing this story is not to disparage Muslims – but to point out that there is a valuable lesson that Muslims in the US could learn.  Maybe where you come from it’s OK to intimidate and threaten people into silence, so they are afraid to say anything that might upset or “insult” you. Here in the United States people are allowed to speak freely, even if we disagree with them.

That’s kind of important to us.

If you are here to genuinely become a part of our society, and are willing to respect our values, live by our laws in real peace, real tolerance, then you are welcome here – even if we totally disagree with your theology.

If you are here to dominate and intimidate – and you are teaching your children to do the same – then we have a problem. If you want to teach submission to Allah, that’s fine. If you are going to teach that America is evil and must be thrown down and replaced with a caliphate run according to Sharia law, then we have a problem.

Do not take advantage of our hospitality and openness. Do not mistake generosity for weakness. You came here as guests, do not be rude to your hosts. You think you have a better way? Fine, talk about it. Share your views. But don’t intimidate or bully people who disagree with you.

If you want to have an Arab Festival, share your culture, fine. But you don’t get to bully or stifle people who disagree with you. What am I talking about? This video is an example of the kind of disrespect and rudeness that offends US, the citizens of the United States. You came into OUR home and treated OUR people in a disrespectful, insulting, bullying manner:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEPod-hxD7g

Oh, and by the way, this is not me expressing “hate” or “intolerance”, this is me saying, “If you are going to live in a civilized society, you need to behave in a civilized fashion.” If that is too difficult, if it offends your religious views, then please, go somewhere else – maybe to a place where others have those same religious views that clearly are very important to you. It will be a lot less stressful for you and quieter here for us.

Sayed Hassan Al-Qazwini, “the spiritual leader” of the Center in Dearborn, said that a major goal of the new mosque will be to reach out to non-Muslims, to educate people about Islam. “There are many misconceptions existing in the minds of non-Muslims in this country about Islam, unfortunately.”

http://www.jafariyanews.com/2k5_news/may/15michigan_islamiccentre.htm

I would suggest there are also many misconceptions existing in the minds of Muslims in this country about Christianity, as well – but you will never break free from those misconceptions if you are unwilling to listen and discuss ideas with people who don’t agree with you.

Oh, yeah, and if Islam really is a religion of Peace and Tolerance – show us. Demonstrate that for us in the way you interact with us. (A good place to start might be for the Muslim leadership in Dearborn to encourage authorities to release these 4 people – or you could really impress us and invite them to share their beliefs at the Islamic Center. Now that would be an impressive display of tolerance.)

Also, the concern expressed here is not because Christians were insulted or treated unfairly – it is concern that the Constitution is being ignored and disrespected.

many British citizens are saying that the police are so worried about Muslim violence they are backing off enforcement of the country's laws.

You know how upset you feel when you think your Prophet (PBUH) has been treated with disrespect? Well, we get kind of bent out of shape when it looks like the Constitutional rights of our citizens get treated with disrespect – even when they are Christians. If it turns out that these 4 people were arrested because they exercised their right to freely express their views and it “upset” someone, then we have a problem.

To be clear: it’s not a Christian thing, it’s a Constitution thing. If you have trouble with that…maybe you’d be more comfortable in a country that is run by Sharia Law. And please, don’t waste our time whining about “religious bigotry”. This is the country that even allowed Scientology and followers of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Touched by His Noodly Appendage, a parody of The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo

Go ahead and follow your cherished beliefs – but play nice and don’t be rude or violent and show the courtesy of respecting our most deeply held values – one of them is the of freedom of expression without fear or threat of violence.

And one last thing: if you’re going to be staying on here in the United States, please do us all a favor and develop a sense of humor and somehow get a thicker skin. All this righteous indignation is getting tiresome. Every little thing offends you deeply and sparks an angry mob seething with outrage.

If the Lutherans and Baptists were like this we’d have riots every day over pot luck dinners gone wrong and deacons with hurt feelings.

“How dare you baptize by sprinkling!”

BOOM!

“How dare you baptize by dunking!”

Boom BOOM!

Supreme Court: Americans have right to own a gun for self-defense anywhere they live

Otis McDonald said he joined a federal lawsuit to challenge Chicago's 28-year-old handgun ban because he wants a handgun at home to protect himself from gangs.

“WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court held Monday that Americans have the right to own a gun for self-defense anywhere they live, expanding the conservative court’s embrace of gun rights since John Roberts became Chief Justice.

By a 5-4 vote, the justices cast doubt on handgun bans in the Chicago area, but signaled that some limitations on the Constitution’s “right to keep and bear arms” could survive legal challenges.”

Elena Kagan: tried to hamper military recruiting at Harvard

Some of the toughest questions Elena Kagan will face in her Supreme Court confirmation hearings this coming week will focus on her actions during the military recruiting controversy while she was dean of Harvard Law School.

In 2004, Kagan barred military recruiters from using the law school’s office of career services to meet with students interested in military service.

To many Americans – including those with family and friends on overseas deployments – any effort to restrict military recruitment endangers US service members and the country.

“The Army was stonewalled at Harvard. Phone calls and emails went unanswered,” an Army recruiter said in a March 2005 memo. “The [career services director] refused to inform students that we were coming to recruit and the [career services director] refused to collect resumes or provide any other assistance.”

Is Chicago trying to stifle right-to-carry ‘town hall meetings’?

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley

Kurt Hofmann, St. Louis Gun Rights Examiner:
“Back in April, I wrote about Illinois Carry’s announcement of a series of “town hall meetings” throughout the state, to educate the public about defensive handgun carry. Since then, those meetings have started the process of building public support for armed self-defense.

Perhaps they’re making a difference–attitudes certainly seem to be changing. That’s why gun rights advocates were really looking forward to having such a meeting right in Chicago itself, and why it’s so unfortunate that a planned south-side Chicago meeting for June 30th has suddenly been thrown into limbo. From the Chicago Reader:

Gerald Vernon says he did everything he should have to obtain a permit to hold a meeting at the Tuley Park field house on the south side…and walked away thinking he’d reserved a meeting room for the evening of June 30. The group that would be convening was Illinois Carry, an organization advocating for the right to bear concealed firearms.

But on Wednesday, a week before the scheduled date of the event, he got a call telling him his permit had been revoked.

The event has apparently been canceled–with no explanation.”

Many legislators aim to copy Arizona immigration law

“BOISE — Arizona’s sweeping new immigration law doesn’t even take effect until next month, but lawmakers in nearly 20 other states are already clamoring to follow in its footsteps.

Gubernatorial candidates in Florida and Minnesota are singing the law’s praises, as are some lawmakers in other states far from the Mexico border such as Idaho and Nebraska. But states also are watching legal challenges to the new law, and whether boycotts over it will harm Arizona’s economy.

“If the feds won’t do it, states are saying, ‘We’re going to have to do it,'” said Idaho state Sen. Monty Pearce.”

Guns Prevent Crime

John Stossel wrote a good article at Reason.com on how guns prevent crimes and save lives.

In Canada and Britain, both with tough gun-control laws, almost half of all burglaries occur when residents are home. But in the United States, where many households contain guns, only 13 percent of burglaries happen when someone is at home.
