Mother Jones Asks Why NRA Isn’t Coming To The Defense Of “Peaceful” Protesters
Surely these actions by law enforcement officers are what NRA head Wayne LaPierre warned about when he wrote in a 1995 fundraising letter that a recently signed assault weapons ban would give “jack-booted government thugs more power to take away our constitutional rights, break in our doors, destroy our property, and even injure or kill us,†right? After all, that was the NRA’s biggest fear during the Obama administration, when the group turned the former president into a liberal bogeyman, incessantly fundraising on the notion that his administration would ban all firearms. And even before that, the group capitalized off of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, making misleading claims that the New Orleans mayor had declared martial law and that police were disarming law-abiding gun owners to help crack down on looters. So surely the nation’s oldest gun rights organization, which has a sordid history of stoking fear among its base that Big Government is going to come and take away rights, would have a lot to say about these current instances of police crackdowns on peaceful protesters, right?
Journalist Tim Pool Shows How Hard It Is To Get A Gun In NJ
From Bearing Arms:
Pool spoke with conservative talk show host Steven Crowder about his experiences.
In short, Tim had quite a time trying to get a gun. I mean, when the police tell you to go to a website that doesn’t even exist, it’s beyond ridiculous. The problem is, what Pool encountered is too common even if he were the only person to ever run into such a thing. He’s not, though.
New Jersey is a very anti-gun state, perhaps one of the most anti-gun there is. It’s not California, but not for lack of trying. All of those laws are meant to keep guns out of people’s hands.
Racism And Gun Control
From The Epoch Times:
How do you stop a lynch mob? With a Winchester repeating rifle. That was the advice of Ida B. Wells, the great journalist who led the fight against lynching. To frustrate her work, a new form of gun control was introduced.
COVID And Riots Have Stopped Gun Control
From Reason:
For fans of legal restrictions on self-defense rights, 2020 is a disaster. It provides continuing evidence that to push gun control proposals is to advocate that the likes of Derek Chauvin—the Minneapolis cop who killed George Floyd—should be armed, while the communities they terrorize should be helpless. It is also to insist that when police fail at their supposedly core task of protecting the public, people should be deprived of the means for defending themselves. As many Americans lose faith in law enforcement and do what’s necessary to shield lives and property, it’s unlikely that they’ll be an enthusiastic audience for future disarmament schemes that would make those of us who don’t work for government even more vulnerable to those who do.
Writer Complains About Police Tyranny Then Completely Misinterprets Second Amendment
From National Review:
There’s no historical evidence to suggest that the Second Amendment was “created to ensure Southern slaveowners the right to maintain & arm slave patrols to put down insurrections amongst the enslaved,†even if southerners subsequently used guns for their nefarious purposes. As Charles Cooke has noted, “That neo-Nazis are protected by the First Amendment does not indict the First Amendment, just as that criminals are protected by the Fifth does not call that bulwark into general question.â€
Lots Of New Female Gun Owners
From The Truth About Guns:
Retailers noted that these new customers were spending $595 on an average sale and that 40 percent of first-time gun buyers in the first four months of 2020 were female. The main purchase driver among the group was personal protection, followed by target shooting and hunting. Also of note was that 25 percent of first-time buyers had already taken some form of firearms safety course and 63 percent inquired about taking a firearms safety course in the near future.
Washington Post Says SCOTUS Shouldn’t Take Any More Second Amendment Cases, Everything’s OK
From The Truth About Guns:
Since Heller, there has been virtually no disagreement among lower courts about how to apply these principles. Appeals courts have established a working consensus on how to evaluate gun measures, carefully following the Supreme Court’s guidance. When there is no disagreement among circuit courts, the Supreme Court typically declines to step in.
Gun Rights Are For Black People Too
From Colorlines:
Every human being has value. With that value comes a God-given right to defend oneself. Black people are not exempt. We must increasingly pursue all means available to protect our person and our families. We must also work to elect leaders who understand and support this. Gun ownership may not solve everything, but it will give us a fighting chance. Like the tools in a toolbox, each one has a distinct and designated purpose. No one tool will work for every situation or problem. But you can get a heck of a lot farther when you have options. Gun ownership is no different.
NY Clerk Shoots Attacker In Defense And Charged With Illegal Possession
From The Truth About Guns:
There’s only one problem. The un-named 34-year-old clerk didn’t have a permit to carry a gun. That’s because he lives in a city that only issues concealed carry permits to those who are wealthy or well-connected. So while this was yet another successful defensive gun use, it wasn’t a legal one.
The clerk has been arrested and charged with criminal possession of a firearm.
“Ghost Guns” Can’t Be Controlled
From Bearing Arms:
It’s easy for someone writing to say that the ATF should regulate “ghost guns,†but the problem is that there’s no practical way to do it. Sure, the ATF could redefine at what point a receiver becomes a firearm, but that will likely push people to build guns complying with the new rules. It wouldn’t actually stop anyone.
Anti-Gun Op-Ed Makes All The Wrong Arguments
From The Quad-City Times:
Anyone conversant with the English language would recognize this as the rationale for not infringing the right of the people to keep and bear arms.
With the rationale gone — states now maintain a National Guard for which weapons are supplied — it would seem the ground on which the amendment stands has caved. I’m surprised the Supreme Court’s “originalists” haven’t noticed this. They might also examine the argument for the amendment in the first place.
Lockdown Has Changed Minds On Guns
From The Washington Free Beacon:
Scott Kane went 38 years without ever touching a gun. That streak would have continued had it not been for the coronavirus. In March, fearful of the harassment his wife and child experienced over their Asian ancestry, Kane found himself in a California gun shop. His March 11 purchase of a 9mm would have been the end of the story, were it not for a political standoff over shutdown orders and background checks. Now Kane, a former supporter of gun-control measures and AR-15 bans, is frustrated by the arduous process that has denied his family a sense of security. The pandemic has made the soft-spoken software engineer an unlikely Second Amendment supporter.
