By 1981 home was not a safe place anymore. Street crime had grown to such staggering proportions that Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren E. Burger declared crime had created a “reign of terror†in American cities and called for a federal program to deal with the problem. Many citizens decided not to wait for the federal government to protect them but to take matters into their own hands. There was a surge of applications for handgun licenses as rabbis, housewives, and schoolteachers took target practice at local shooting ranges. One Esquire reader, Chip Elliott, wrote a letter to the magazine telling us why he and his wife both decided to pack a gun. It was published as “Letter from an Angry Reader,†in September 1981.

It comes as no surprise to the firearm and ammunition industry that gun ownership, the number of firearms owned by law-abiding Americans or the number of federally licensed firearm retailers were not among the factors listed, despite popular claims by gun control groups.
Gun Ownership As Insurance Against Threats

Owning a gun is like keeping a spare tire in your trunk, a first aid kit at home, or an emergency savings account. We hope never to use them, but we’re glad we have them. None of this indicates paranoia. Carrying a gun is similar to carrying insurance, except it’s better: You actually get to collect the benefits without having to incur serious harm.

If we take the time to look at the raw data provided by the FBI, we find that all rifles, not just “assault-style rifles,†constitute on average 340 homicides per year from 2007 through 2017 (see Figure 1.). When we adjust these numbers to take under-reporting into account, that number rises to an average of 439 per year.
In any given year, for every person murdered with a rifle, there are 15 murdered with handguns, 1.7 with hands or fists, and 1.2 with blunt instruments. In fact, homicides with any sort of rifle represent a mere 3.2 percent of all homicides on average over the past decade.
France Plagued With 100 Knife Attacks A Day

The figures, which come from the National Observatory of Delinquency and Criminal Responses (ONDRP), claim that between 2015 and 2017 there were around 44,000 victims of knife crime each year, or an average of 120 per day.
On average, 118,000 people in France say they were victims of some sort of violent crime involving an attacker who they were not living with such as assaults in public areas, schools, nightclubs, and other venues, Le Figaro reports.

The number of offences has risen by four per cent over the previous year and twenty-seven per cent in five years, the latest statistics available show.
Gun Control Ad Uses False Stats

That number includes young adults as well as minors, and it includes suicides as well as homicides.
Career Criminals The Problem Not Guns

William Ray Tolliver has at least 44 prior arrests and 20 convictions, for offenses including unlawful possession of a firearm, theft, malicious mischief, and assault.
Marquise Latrelle Tolbert has over 20 arrests, with 15 convictions, including for robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, discharging a firearm in a public place, theft, and harassment.
Both men were arrested in 2018 for drive-by shooting and weapons violations but appear not to have served time in prison. Police believe they are both members of a local gang.
