How The First and Second Amendments Are Linked

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution didn’t appear out of thin air. In fact, it’s practically plagiarized from the English Bill of Rights. Parliament adopted that in 1689 for one specific reason: to protect the religious freedoms of Puritans and other “low-church†Protestants. They’d been persecuted, legally, by British kings for more than a century. So Parliament included in the bill the proviso that “no Protestant†could be denied the right to carry arms. The link between gun rights and religious freedom was spelled out in the text. (Alas, it left us Catholics out — but that got fixed in the American version, a century later.)
Justice Roberts Is No Friend To Gun Owners

Gun owners have had a pretty good idea that Chief Justice John Roberts is reluctant to take a Second Amendment case for awhile now. First there was the Supreme Court’s mooting of a case dealing with a New York City gun law back in April, denying an opportunity for SCOTUS to once again weigh in on the right to keep and bear arms. That was followed in June by the refusal to hear any of the ten cases dealing with the Second Amendment that the Court had been considering in conference.
NY Bill: Making Your Own Gun Is Illegal

The measure would define a “ghost gun†under state law as any firearm that isn’t serialized and registered, with no provision for grandfathering of guns already in circulation. Currently, federal law allows anyone legally able to possess a firearm to build one for their personal use.

Police Refuse To Protect Democrat Convention

More than 100 police agencies are withdrawing from agreements to send personnel to bolster security at next month’s Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee, in part because they’re concerned about a recent directive ordering police in the city to stop using tear gas to control crowds.
First Fatal Shooting At Protest In Austin

A man who admitted to fatally shooting an armed Black Lives Matter protester in Austin on Saturday night was taken into custody and then released pending further investigation, the Texas city’s police chief said.
Chief Brian Manley said detectives assigned to the homicide unit detained the man and interviewed him after he called 911 shortly after the shooting. The man said he had shot someone who approached his vehicle during the demonstration and pointed a weapon at him.
Czech Republic Endorses Armed Self Defense As A Human Right

The Czech Republic continues to be at the forefront of the battle for gun rights in Europe. On July 13, the Czech government announced that it endorsed a plan to enshrine the right of individuals to use a firearm to defend themselves and others in the central European nation’s constitution. The move comes three years after another pro-gun constitutional amendment passed the Czech Chamber of Deputies (the lower house of the Czech Parliament) but failed to receive final approval.Â
Last September, 35 members of the Czech Senate introduced legislation to amend the Czech Constitution’s Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms. The proposal would alter the charter to include language that roughly translates to the following, “The right to defend one’s life or another’s life and weapons is guaranteed under the conditions laid down by law.â€

Poll Says Americans Oppose Weapon/Magazine Bans

What does this mean for the perennial debate over banning semiautomatic rifles like MSRs? According to the survey results, a majority of voters in these states oppose a so-called “assault weapon†ban, which would outlaw the popular MSRs based solely on the cosmetic features of the firearm. Nearly two-thirds of the respondents acknowledge that a ban on MSRs would not be effective for reducing crime in their communities.
Anti-Gunners Want More Laws, Less Enforcement

Until just a few months ago, gun control groups would likely have cheered the president’s decision. After all, more federal law enforcement resources means more opportunities to enforce federal gun laws. Since the start of the “defund police†movement, however, gun control advocates have found themselves in the increasingly awkward position of advocating for more gun laws to be put on the books, while downplaying the idea of actually enforcing them.
Group Publishes List Of Anti-Gun Businesses
The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms has launched a public campaign alerting gun owners about businesses and their CEOs who push for increased gun control and prohibition, identifying the culprits.
The “Don’t Feed the Gun Prohibitionists†project has developed a dynamic list of businesses and CEOs who have been pushing for new legislation designed to impair the rights of law-abiding firearms owners. The list may be found at www.ccrkba.org/antigunbusinesses.
Media Continue To Lie About Guns

With the possible exception of religion, there is no issue in American political life that is as poorly covered as guns. At RealClearPolitics, John Lott reports that legacy media outlets often quite literally allow anti–Second Amendment activists to write their news stories on gun policy. Politico hasn’t quite done that today, but . . . well, I’m not sure having reporters dutifully repackaging Everytown USA press releases is any better.
