Marines Test New Long Range Radios

The Harris radios Marines carry in Afghanistan, hooked up to the military’s Joint Tactical Radio System, have a range of under 100 miles. Not bad for when you’re patrolling Anbar or Helmand provinces.
Enter the Distributed Tactical Communications System, a brainchild of the futurists and contrarians at the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory. The DTCS, as it’s known, would more than double the reach of the Marines’ connectivity, allowing them to communicate from 250 nautical miles, via satellite. And that’s for starters: The Lab says the system has a 30 percent success rate in tests of 700 miles.
Georgia To Allow Silencers For Hunting
From the AP:
Senate Bill 301 was approved by a vote of 48-5. Sen. John Bulloch, the bill’s sponsor, says allowing hunters to use silencers would keep them from disturbing their neighbors, and removing the ban would not create an unfair advantage for hunters. Hunters would still need a federal permit to possess a silencer.

Micro 7 Rifle Specifics
Yes, the Micro 7 is built on the Remington 700 short-action. The owner’s manual included with the rifle is actually the Rem. 700 manual. The AAC Micro 7 rifle is small and light-weight, hence the Micro moniker.  The barrel is 16 inches long with a 1 in 8 twist for the slower, heavy bullets.  As it is assumed the end user will be employing a silencer, the muzzle is threaded for the normal .30 caliber 5/8-24 TPI. AAC includes a thread protector.
An “X-Mark Pro†adjustable trigger with a two position safety is included as part of the package. The bolt action is fed from a four round magazine with a hinged floorplate.  Atop the action AAC has include a 20 MOA Picatinny scope rail. A black nitride finish is applied to the metal parts.
The barrel and action are bedded into a black synthetic stock. This stock has an adjustable cheek piece and a rubber buttpad. Standard sling studs are located fore and aft. Empty weight is right around 6.5 pounds.

Virginia To Allow Multiple Gun Purchases Per Month

Woman Ordered To Give Up Password

The authorities seized the Toshiba laptop from defendant Ramona Fricosu in 2010 with a court warrant while investigating alleged mortgage fraud. Ruling that the woman’s Fifth Amendment rights against compelled self-incrimination would not be breached, U.S. District Judge Robert Blackburn ordered the woman in January to decrypt the laptop.
Administration Continues To Warn About “anti-government exremists”

These extremists, sometimes known as “sovereign citizens,” believe they can live outside any type of government authority, FBI agents said at a news conference.
Legal convictions of such extremists, mostly for white-collar crimes such as fraud, have increased from 10 in 2009 to 18 each in 2010 and 2011, FBI agents said.
The Executive branch has an obsession with a tiny percentage of the population in the United States that believes they don’t have to follow any rules. The administration continues to point out these people as a serious threat, while denying any correlation between any terrorist attack and Islam. Where are the FBI warnings of Muslims preaching overthrow of the US government?
Sandia Labratories Develops Laser Guided Bullet

The bullet is flanged with four fins for straight flight, like a dart, which are encased in a plastic sabot that falls off as soon as the bullet leaves its smooth-bore barrel. The bullet has internal electromagnetic actuators that correct its flight; it doesn’t need to spin, it stabilizes itself. “The natural body frequency of this bullet is about 30 hertz, so we can make corrections 30 times per second. That means we can overcorrect, so we don’t have to be as precise each time,†Jones said.
India Looking To Buy C-17s
India is looking to replace its aging Russian IL-76s with the more capable C-17 Globemaster. The Globemaster has a larger lift capacity and a short field takeoff ability.

Hasan Trial Delayed

Navy Commits To Renewable Energy
The President mentioned it in the state of the union speech, and the Military Times has reported that the Navy is committing to buy a large amount of renewable energy by 2020.

The Navy will reach its goal by using a variety of alternative financing techniques, including:
• Energy savings performance contracts, where a company pays the upfront investment for energy-efficiency renovations and retrofits in exchange for payments from energy savings over time.
• Enhanced-use leases, where a company gets to develop government land with renewable energy or other projects in exchange for payment or in-kind services such as reduced-rate energy.
• Power purchase agreements, in which a power company constructs an energy system in exchange for fixed payments over a certain number of years.
I can only guess that when the power is actually needed for whatever the Navy needs it for, it will be a cloudy windless day and we will all be praying that we stuck with gasoline or CNG.
Nigeria’s Boko Haram Militants Remain a Regional Threat

The Nigerian militant group Boko Haram conducted a series of bombing attacks and armed assaults Jan. 20 in the northern city of Kano, the capital of Kano state and second-largest city in Nigeria. The attacks, which reportedly included the employment of at least two suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs), targeted a series of police facilities in Kano. These included the regional police headquarters, which directs police operations in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states, as well as the State Security Service office and the Nigerian Immigration Service office. At least 211 people died in the Kano attacks, according to media reports.
The group carried out a second wave of attacks in Bauchi state on Jan. 22, bombing two unoccupied churches in the Bauchi metropolitan area and attacking a police station in the Tafawa Balewa local government area. Militants reportedly also tried to rob a bank in Tafawa Balewa the same day. Though security forces thwarted the robbery attempt, 10 people reportedly died in the clash, including two soldiers and a deputy police superintendent.
In a third attack, Boko Haram militants attacked a police sub-station in Kano on Jan. 24 with small arms and improvised hand grenades. A tally of causalities in the assault, which reportedly lasted some 25 minutes, was not available. This armed assault stands out tactically from the Jan. 20 suicide attacks against police stations in Kano. The operation could have been an attempt to liberate some of the Boko Haram militants the government arrested following the Jan. 20 and Jan. 22 attacks. Read the rest of this entry »
