Apple’s Lip Service To Freedom
Posted by Brian in News, Threat Watch on 11/Jul/2018 13:01
From Wired:
In the months since, Wardle has worked on and off to deconstruct that emoji mystery. What he found—and helped Apple fix—wasn’t the targeted hacking of his friend’s iPhone. Instead, it was an unintentional bug in a very intentional censorship feature, one that Apple includes in every iPhone in the world in an apparent attempt to placate the Chinese government. “Basically, Apple added some code to iOS with the goal that phones in China wouldn’t display a Taiwanese flag,” Wardle says, “and there was a bug in that code.”

Under the agreement, which resolved a suit filed by the two groups in 2015, Americans may “access, discuss, use, reproduce or otherwise benefit from the technical data” that the government had previously ordered Defense Distributed to cease distributing.

CA Registration Data Breach
Posted by Brian in Law, News, Threat Watch on 9/Jul/2018 12:40
From NRA-ILA:
Possibly even more concerning with DOJ’s online registration system were the reports of the system’s improper disclosure of personal information to other users. There have been confirmed reports of individuals attempting to register their firearms who were improperly given access to the account information associated with another individual, due to a complete breakdown of CA DOJ’s registration application system. In some cases, the system allowed users to see all the personal information (including home address, telephone number, email, and Driver’s License number) for another user and all the information that user had submitted for registering their firearms as “assault weaponsâ€â€”including the firearms make/model/serial number and all of the photos and attachments to the user’s registration application.

SAS Soldier vs Taliban
Posted by Brian in News, Threat Watch on 5/Jul/2018 07:00
From The Daily Wire:
The mission had only been partially successful because the base was destroyed, but the SAS were after a “high-value target†and he had escaped into the tunnels. It was pretty clear none of the Afghan commandos was going to go in after him so he volunteered. There wasn’t enough room to use a long-barreled weapon so the Brit used his Glock 9mm pistol and grabbed a claw hammer. He couldn’t see the Taliban but he could hear and smell them. He shot three of them dead one after the other but then his pistol jammed. He fought two more in the dark where the tunnel opened into a larger room that was partially lit by a candle. After he killed those two, he was attacked by another but killed him almost instantly with a single blow.
Court: Impossible Doesn’t Mean Unconstitutional
From NRA-ILA:
The majority of the court went further, though, and eliminated the possibility that its own rule could be applied to make the law inoperative in this or any other case: “Neither the text nor the purpose of the Act contemplates that a showing of impossibility can excuse compliance with the statutory requirement once the statute goes into effect,†adding that Section 3531 did “not authorize courts to independently carve out exceptions for impossibility†once the certification had been made.
The State of Concealed Carry Reciprocity
From The Truth About Guns:
One of the most hotly debated issues on the Second Amendment is over the right to carry firearms outside the home.  Today, each of the 50 states as well as the District of Columbia authorizes ordinary citizens to carry a handgun in most public places under one of the following three regimes:
- Constitutional Carry: 12 states
- Shall-Issue permit: 30 states and DC
- May-Issue permit: 8 states
Supreme Court Continues To Ignore Second Amendment Cases
Posted by Brian in Law, News, Threat Watch on 2/Jul/2018 13:29
From Reason:
Ten years ago this week, the Supreme Court for the first time explicitly recognized that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to armed self-defense. Since then the Court has revisited the subject only twice, while it has heard about 45 cases involving the Fourth Amendment and about 60 involving the First.
