MTV: Gun Control Is Racist

From MTV:

States passed laws forbidding African-Americans from carrying weapons. In South Carolina, slaves — who were “of barbarous, wild savage natures” according to Colony Law — could not have unsupervised access to weapons and could be killed freely, provided the murder wasn’t “wanton.” In Florida, white “citizens patrols” were permitted to search the homes of free African-Americans for guns “and other offensive or improper weapons, and may lawfully seize and take away such arms, weapons, and ammunition.” The message was clear: guns — like the ballot box, marriage, and the right to free assembly — were for white Americans only.

Many resisted, and did so with the very weapons they were forbidden to own. Harriet Tubman rescued more than 300 people from slavery with a gun under her arm. Frederick Douglass wrote in 1854 that a good revolver was critical to staying free: “Every slave hunter who meets a bloody death in his infernal business is an argument in favor of the manhood of our race.”

Gun Prohibitionists Claim Massachusetts Is A Model For The Country

From Boston Globe:

So what makes this state’s gun laws effective? Two elements are key: All gun sales, even those from private sellers, incorporate a federal background check at some stage in the process. Secondly, to purchase a gun, someone must first apply to the local police chief for a renewable license; even if the applicant passes the federal background check, the chief can deny a license if, based on reliable information, he or she deems the applicant a risk to public safety or to themselves.

Rideshare Divers Targeted Because They Are Unarmed

From Bearing Arms:

We’ve been covering the rise in carjackings and other violent crimes committed against Uber and Lyft drivers for some time now, including the story of Cynthia Norman, a Cleveland woman and driver for Lyft who was cut loose by the company because she dared to defend herself against a pair of attackers with her legally owned and lawfully carried firearm.

Both Uber and Lyft have policies that require drivers be unarmed, and most of the folks contracting to drive for the companies abide by those restrictions (though clearly not all of them do). Still, violent criminals don’t seem to care that they’re not supposed to bring a gun along for their ride as well. One of the latest attacks on a rideshare driver took place just a few days ago in Gilbert, Arizona.

Oklahoma Bill Would Ban NICS In Favor Of State System

From Bearing Arms:

“As far as background checks they’re going to look into it if you pass an OSBI background check then I’m pretty sure you don’t have any mental issues you’ll get a more thorough check through the OSBI than you would the NICS system,” said State Rep. David Hardin, (R) OK House District 86.

Maryland Attacks Private Transfers

From Guns.com:

The expanded background check law prohibits a person from transferring a rifle or shotgun to another individual unless a NICS background check had first taken place. Those found guilty of doing so face as much as six months in prison and a $10,000 fine. Few exceptions to the law, such as for police or military service, or for inoperable guns given to a museum, are allowed.

Second Amendment Foundation Produces Ads From Grassroots Donations

From Guns.com:

In recent weeks, cable news networks have seen a noticeable rise in ads defending the Second Amendment and urging viewers to take action. We can thank Alan Gottlieb and the Second Amendment Foundation’s grassroots fundraising and 2A support efforts for these ads. These 60-second ads, aptly titled “Second Amendment, First Responder,” pull no punches in getting their message across. The Second Amendment is under siege, and Gottlieb intends to do everything in his power to let people know what they can do about it.

Rubio Proposes Anti Gun Bill

From The Federalist:

Individuals, the legislation states, do not have to be guilty for the FBI director and the Joint Terrorism Task Force to be alerted when they attempt to purchase or receive a transferred firearm. The U.S. attorney general is also notified and retains the power to stall the process for up to 10 business days and file an emergency petition to halt the gun procedure until a court can rule on it as long as the individual is notified.

They’ll Never Stop Going After Guns

From Reason:

A gun control bill that Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D–Texas) recently introduced gives you an idea of what Democrats might do if they did not have to worry about the Second Amendment. The Sabika Sheikh Firearm Licensing and Registration Act would establish a national database that is supposed to include every gun in the country, make it a felony to own a firearm or ammunition without a license from the Justice Department, ban magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and “ammunition that is 0.50 caliber or greater,” and criminalize possession of a “military-style weapon” without a special license. Violating the bill’s provisions would be punishable by hefty fines and long minimum prison sentences, which Lee ordinarily claims to oppose.

Washington Post Advocates Disarming Americans

From National Review:

The other day, Karen Attiah, Global Opinions editor at the Washington Post, one of the largest and most prestigious newspapers in the world, reasoned that “if America were another country, we would be talking about how post-Civil War America is still in desperate need of a U.N.-sponsored Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) program for white supremacists and segregationists.”

Well, perhaps “reasoned” is an overstatement. The idea, of course, is as preposterous as it is juvenile, but more seriously, it betrays a corrosive illiberalism and warped understanding of American life that’s infected so much of the Left these days.

Black Americans Discover Gun Rights

From New York Daily News:

Today, Black Americans have not lost their interest in owning firearms or joining gun clubs, according to the National African American Gun Association (NAAGA).

Self-defense continues to be a prime motive for gun ownership for many Black Americans, particularly in view of the rise in neighborhood shootings and the increase in officer-involved shootings and police brutality.

We Don’t Punish The Responsible For The Actions Of The Irresponsible

From The Objective Standard:

Granted, some people misuse guns: In 2011 an estimated 11,101 of 15,953 homicides involved a gun, as did 19,766 of 38,285 suicides, as did 851 of 122,777 accidental deaths. But such misuse is not grounds for outlawing guns. Legitimate laws—those that protect individual rights—do not punish law-abiding individuals for the crimes of others, nor do they restrain the psychologically healthy because of the suicidal, nor do they restrain the responsible because of the irresponsible.

Traveling With Guns

From The Truth About Guns:

Interstate transport of firearms in the US is not heavily regulated, and there are protections in place for legal owners to move their weapons across state lines for legal purposes.

The inadequately respected Second Amendment is the foundation of your right to travel with firearms. More clearly, 18 U.S. Code § 926A: ‘Interstate transportation of firearms’ protects someone passing through even states which would not otherwise allow you to possess them, so long as your possession is legal in your destination. (Some states like New Jersey are extremely strict even about meal stops so it is best to plan no stops there at all.)
