By 1981 home was not a safe place anymore. Street crime had grown to such staggering proportions that Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren E. Burger declared crime had created a “reign of terror†in American cities and called for a federal program to deal with the problem. Many citizens decided not to wait for the federal government to protect them but to take matters into their own hands. There was a surge of applications for handgun licenses as rabbis, housewives, and schoolteachers took target practice at local shooting ranges. One Esquire reader, Chip Elliott, wrote a letter to the magazine telling us why he and his wife both decided to pack a gun. It was published as “Letter from an Angry Reader,†in September 1981.

It’s a little game political media like to play — the Associated Press miraculously ran almost an identical piece on the same day — in which reporters take a hyperbolic backbencher’s comments or a misleading social-media post — in this case, a Facebook post that is “gaining traction†— and use it as a strawman to deceive voters about one of the controversial positions of their favored politician.

As District Attorney in San Francisco, Kamala Harris signed on to an amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court in the Heller case, arguing that “for nearly 70 years courts have consistently sustained criminal firearms laws against Second Amendment challenges by holding that, inter alia, (i) the Second Amendment provides only a militia-related right to bear arms, (ii) the Second Amendment does not apply to legislation passed by state or local governments, and (iii) the restrictions bear a reasonable relationship to protecting public safety and thus do not violate a personal constitutional right.â€

Democrat Platform Is An All Out Attack On Guns

Democrats will enact universal background checks, end online sales of guns and ammunition, close dangerous loopholes that currently allow stalkers and some individuals convicted of assault or battery to buy and possess firearms, and adequately fund the federal background check system. We will close the “Charleston loophole†and prevent individuals who have been convicted of hate crimes from possessing firearms. Democrats will ban the manufacture and sale of assault weapons and high capacity magazines. We will incentivize states to enact licensing requirements for owning firearms and “red flag†laws that allow courts to temporarily remove guns from the possession of those who are a danger to themselves or others. We will pass legislation requiring that guns be safely stored in homes. Right To Self Defense Knows No Bounds

Last Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky, about 300 armed members of the NFAC (Not Fucking Around Coalition), a self-described “black militia” based in Atlanta, had what the Louisville Courier-Journal called “a tense standoff” with about 50 armed Three Percenters, which the paper described as a “far-right…militia.” While the incident, which ended without violence, could be seen as yet another sign that the country is descending into 1968-style chaos, it was also a striking illustration of the Second Amendment’s enduring practical and symbolic importance that scrambled conventional stereotypes about the right to armed self-defense.
How The First and Second Amendments Are Linked

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution didn’t appear out of thin air. In fact, it’s practically plagiarized from the English Bill of Rights. Parliament adopted that in 1689 for one specific reason: to protect the religious freedoms of Puritans and other “low-church†Protestants. They’d been persecuted, legally, by British kings for more than a century. So Parliament included in the bill the proviso that “no Protestant†could be denied the right to carry arms. The link between gun rights and religious freedom was spelled out in the text. (Alas, it left us Catholics out — but that got fixed in the American version, a century later.)
Justice Roberts Is No Friend To Gun Owners

Gun owners have had a pretty good idea that Chief Justice John Roberts is reluctant to take a Second Amendment case for awhile now. First there was the Supreme Court’s mooting of a case dealing with a New York City gun law back in April, denying an opportunity for SCOTUS to once again weigh in on the right to keep and bear arms. That was followed in June by the refusal to hear any of the ten cases dealing with the Second Amendment that the Court had been considering in conference.
