Biden Cracks Down On Ammo Imports During A Shortage

On Friday, August 20th, Joe Biden signed an executive order blocking the importation of all Russian-made firearms and ammo. The move was ostensibly made to punish the Russians for the imprisonment and attempted murder of dissident Alexey Navalny.
So in the middle of a foreign policy debacle in Afghanistan, Biden has decided to sanctionÂ
Russia America’s gun owners in response to a Russian opposition party figure coming down with an acute case of nerve agent poisoning. This violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention — which occurred a year ago — apparently wasn’t serious enough, though, for the Biden administration to want to stand in the way of Russian gas exports by a Putin friend and former Stasi agent.
The Ammo Shortage Could Last Another 2 Years

As store shelves lie barren and prices for the most popular ammunition hover at two, three, or even five times their pre-pandemic levels, manufacturers said they are still scrambling to bring enough product to market. They said they are still working through several years’ worth of orders that have already been placed.
“On certain products, we are certainly seeing backlogs that stretch out two years and beyond,†Brett Flaugher, president of Winchester Ammunition, told The Reload. “For those who shoot 9mm and 5.56 ammunition, which are both in high demand, it’s very uncertain how long it will be before people will consistently have ammunition readily available.â€
Remington Ammo Back To Full Production

Dems Continue Assault On Guns With Online Ammo Bill

First, it would institute a program to require ammo dealers to obtain a license to sell their products to consumers. Current federal law only requires a license for those engaged in importing or manufacturing ammunition, not to sell, purchase, or possess. This would inevitably have the effect of trimming the number of legal vendors to the marketplace.
Next, Coleman’s bill would require face-to-face transfers of ammunition from licensed dealers to consumers, which is a departure from the common practice today of gun owners searching for deals through online sites such as Guns.com to fill their ammo needs. This would be further enhanced by a ban on shipping ammo to anyone without a license.
5.7 Has Been Standardized By NATO

The FN-designed 5.7×28 mm caliber has been officially standardized by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Its development began in the late 1980s when, “Jean-Paul Denis and Marc Neuforge, designers at FN Herstal, started from scratch to design a new cartridge and then a platform to launch it,†according to Dave Campbell’s story for American Rifleman.
Fenix Ammunition Takes A Stand Against Selling To Police

Fenix Ammunition shared a Penalty Notice from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Twitter the other day. Apparently a police officer “was dispatched†to their business in November of 2020. What prompted this dispatch is unclear. The police officer, Matthew Chaylaszek, reported seeing a sign on the door that read “We do not wear masks, make your own decisions.†Chaylaszek says he entered the shop and saw the owner, Justin Nazaroff, unmasked and helping a customer. Now, come January, they’ve been fined $1,000 by the State of Michigan for the mask violation. As a result, Fenix Ammunition has suspended ammo sales to law enforcement agencies.

Winchester debuted their 6.8 Western chambering in conjunction with partner Browning’s launch of multiple bolt-action rifles ready to send these rounds after animals like Elk and Mule Deer. Both the Winchester Model 70 and XPR lines of bolt-action rifles are already being chambered for the zippy new round.
Vista Outdoors Has Billion Dollar Ammo Backlog

“We currently have over a year’s worth of orders for ammunition in excess of $1 billion,†CEO Chis Metz said during the Nov. 5 call, calling the backlog “unprecedented.â€
“With demand far outstripping supply and inventory levels in the channel at all-time lows, we see strong demand continuing, and this metric informs our viewpoint of what a recovery or normalization could look like,†he continued.
Ammo Company Has $80 Million Backorder

Scottsdale-based ammunition company Ammo Incorporated is facing an $80.1 million order backlog amid record demand for ammunition.
“We just bought 2.8 million dollars worth of machinery and equipment last week to increase our production and increase our volume,” Wagenhals said.
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the year has already seen a boom in gun purchases, up 95% in the first half of 2020 compared to the same time period of 2019.

“First time buyers are buying .38 special revolvers and 9mm pistols,†said Wallace. “We’ll get a shipment in one day and the entire stock of what we put out in one day will be gone in one day.â€
Wallace said a shipment of a hundred guns will be gone on the same day. He told Jose manufacturers are running 24 hours a day to keep up with demand.

Why Ammo Makers Aren’t Increasing Production

They don’t want to get burned like in 2016, when sales surged to record levels only to implode on Election Day. Sales then were driven by fears of gun control fueled by mass shootings, but those fears evaporated with the election of President Trump, a Republican endorsed by the National Rifle Association. Gun sales plunged immediately after his election, resulting in layoffs and sliding stocks for Sturm, Ruger and Smith & Wesson.
Gun Dealer On Buying Guns and Ammo

Demand is still outstripping supply on many different fronts on firearms and ammunition. Vendors have flat out told dealers that there’s nothing to ship and they should expect shelves for a while. Larger dealers get filled first, smaller dealers get the short end of the stick since they are, well, smaller accounts.
We’re seeing $500-650/thousand on 9mm FMJ 115gr online among the dealers that have anything left. Even Palmetto State Armory is picked clean on 9mm as of this writing, save for some defensive ammo at about $40 for a 20-round box.
