Shooting Sports Coming Back To High School
From The Reload:
High schoolers are falling in love with competitive clay-target shooting.
“In the beginning of my shooting journey I became hooked because it felt like the first thing I was pretty good at and I felt like I could excel at,” Brendan Birch, a recent high school graduate who competed for the Frederick Stars and Stripes, told The Reload. “What continued to grow my connection to this sport is the friendships and advice received from everyone around me.”
The Stars and Stripes are a clay target club team based in Frederick County who competes statewide in the Maryland Clay Target High School League and nationally in the USA High School Clay Target League. Both leagues are divisions of a broader organization, the USA Clay Target League or USACTL.
Canada Cracks Down On Gun Rights, Crime At New High
From Ammoland:
The Liberal public safety “plan will keep Canadians safe and protect their rights, without resorting to the politics of fear or letting ideology trump evidence in decision-making.” On guns specifically, the Liberal Party asserted that the Conservative government, under then-Prime Minister “Stephen Harper has steadily weakened our gun laws in ways that make Canadians more vulnerable and communities more dangerous. We will take pragmatic action to make it harder for criminals to get, and use, handguns and assault weapons.”
At the end of July, Statistics Canada (StatsCan), a federal government agency, released year-over-year crime data for 2022.
The increase “included higher rates of robbery (+15%), extortion (+39%), homicide (+8%) and level 1 sexual assault (+3%),” and the rate of Level 2 assault involving a weapon or bodily harm has increased every year since 2015. The general Crime Severity Index (which measures changes in the level of severity of overall crime in Canada from year to year, with “more serious offenses hav[ing] a greater impact on changes in the index”) had declined every consecutive year since 2004, dropping from 106.84 (2003) to 66.90 (2014). This downward trend began to reverse in 2015, and, with the exception of the pandemic year of 2020, the annual CSI continues to rise. In another notable milestone, the homicide rate in 2022 reached a level that has not been seen since 1992.
Texas Rallies Around Gun Dealer Targeted By ATF
From Ammoland:
A story published last month revealed that Harris was the latest home-based gun dealer to be targeted by the ATF. Harris and others say the ATF chose to harass and intimidate home-based dealers into voluntarily surrendering their FFLs because they know most lack the financial resources to mount a legal defense and fight back.
“The ATF didn’t follow their own protocols,” Harris said. “Now, they’re making up allegations.”
One of Harris’ longtime customers created a GiveSendGo account, which has raised nearly $20,000, although Harris will likely need much more.
Biden Admin Sends More Arms To Ukraine, Depleting Domestic Stock
From Guns.com:
“This announcement is the Biden Administration’s 44th tranche of equipment to be provided from DoD inventories for Ukraine since August 2021,” noted the Pentagon in a simple release. Besides “over 12 million rounds of small arms ammunition,” the withdrawal includes additional 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds, 120mm tank ammunition, as well as additional munitions for Patriot air defense systems and HIMARS rocket systems.
The running tally sheet of the more than $43 billion in American equipment transferred to Ukraine by the Biden administration since February 2022 includes “more than 300,000,000 rounds of small arms ammunition,” a figure first broached in June.
Hi-Point Yeet Cannon Finally Released
From Guns.com:
Ohio-based Hi-Point Firearms finally ended the long wait for its illusive “Yeet Cannon” pistol when it unveiled the brand-new 9mm YC9 today. This is one of those guns that has been living rent-free in my head for several years now.
Arrival of the YC9 was first expected back in 2019, but Hi-Point continued to work on the gun for years under a veil of secrecy. Now, the newly employee-owned and operated company – as of last year – has YC9s rolling out to distributors’ shelves as I write this review. Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait until the release.
NYT Wants To Blame Increased Shootings On Glock “Switches”
From The New York Times:
These makeshift machine guns — able to inflict indiscriminate carnage in seconds — are helping fuel the national epidemic of gun violence, making shootings increasingly lethal, creating added risks for bystanders and leaving survivors more grievously wounded, according to law enforcement authorities and medical workers.
Defending Schools With Armed Teachers
From Slow Facts:
The solution is obvious, if invisible. The researchers who study school security told us what to do over a decade ago. Murderers stop killing our kids when they face an armed defender. The defender’s response time predicts the body count. The SRO can’t be on the bus before school and on the bus after school, but the bus driver can. The SRO isn’t at the choir practice before school, but the choir director is there. After school, the SRO can’t be at the ball field and in the music room at the same time, but the coaches and band director are certainly there.
Armed defenders are better than the statistics would indicate. The advantage of volunteer school defenders is that they are close to every student all the time. A mass-murderer never knows who is armed and ready to stop him.
How Predators Choose Their Victims
From Psychology Today:
In the field of victimology, one of the central concepts is that of the “risk continuum”—there are degrees of risk for a type of crime based on your career, lifestyle, relationships, movements, and even personality, aspects of which are manifest in your behavior and demeanor. Some factors that make people potential victims are obvious—flashing wads of cash, wearing expensive jewelry, walking alone on back streets. Others are subtler, including posture, walking style, even the ability to read facial expressions.
What To Say After A Defensive Shooting
From The Truth About Guns:
Avoid using the “K word” at all costs. Say as little to the responding officers as possible until you talk to an attorney.
“I’m really shaken up officer. I’ll cooperate fully as soon as my attorney arrives.” Then…shut up. Period.
A Proposal To Save The NRA
From Ammoland:
The NRA needs Directors who are willing to ask tough questions, challenge the status quo, and stand up for the membership. We need Directors with integrity and conviction, not Yes-men and sycophants. We need Directors who understand business and finance, as well as understand and unflinchingly support the core principles of the Second Amendment right to arms.
If you or someone you know fits the bill, you or they are desperately needed right now. We only have until November 7, 2023, to collect about 500 valid signatures from Voting Members of the Association for each person we want nominated. Voting Members are Annual Members who have been members for at least five consecutive years and Life Members. You will need to know your NRA Member ID number as well to complete the form.
