MTV: Gun Control Is Racist
From MTV:
States passed laws forbidding African-Americans from carrying weapons. In South Carolina, slaves — who were “of barbarous, wild savage natures” according to Colony Law — could not have unsupervised access to weapons and could be killed freely, provided the murder wasn’t “wanton.†In Florida, white “citizens patrols†were permitted to search the homes of free African-Americans for guns “and other offensive or improper weapons, and may lawfully seize and take away such arms, weapons, and ammunition.†The message was clear: guns — like the ballot box, marriage, and the right to free assembly — were for white Americans only.
Many resisted, and did so with the very weapons they were forbidden to own. Harriet Tubman rescued more than 300 people from slavery with a gun under her arm. Frederick Douglass wrote in 1854 that a good revolver was critical to staying free: “Every slave hunter who meets a bloody death in his infernal business is an argument in favor of the manhood of our race.”
Increase In Attacks On Asian Americans
From Bearing Arms:
Amidst a rise in attacks on Asian-Americans in cities like San Francisco and Oakland, a growing number of members of the community are choosing to protect themselves and others with a firearm. In a lengthy account, the Washington Post details how the attacks are impacting Asian-Americans and prompting them to think carefully about how best to stay safe while the violence continues to grow.
Gun Prohibitionists Claim Massachusetts Is A Model For The Country
From Boston Globe:
So what makes this state’s gun laws effective? Two elements are key: All gun sales, even those from private sellers, incorporate a federal background check at some stage in the process. Secondly, to purchase a gun, someone must first apply to the local police chief for a renewable license; even if the applicant passes the federal background check, the chief can deny a license if, based on reliable information, he or she deems the applicant a risk to public safety or to themselves.
Rideshare Divers Targeted Because They Are Unarmed
From Bearing Arms:
We’ve been covering the rise in carjackings and other violent crimes committed against Uber and Lyft drivers for some time now, including the story of Cynthia Norman, a Cleveland woman and driver for Lyft who was cut loose by the company because she dared to defend herself against a pair of attackers with her legally owned and lawfully carried firearm.
Both Uber and Lyft have policies that require drivers be unarmed, and most of the folks contracting to drive for the companies abide by those restrictions (though clearly not all of them do). Still, violent criminals don’t seem to care that they’re not supposed to bring a gun along for their ride as well. One of the latest attacks on a rideshare driver took place just a few days ago in Gilbert, Arizona.
Killer Mike On Blacks Embracing Self Defense
From Colorlines:
In fact, following Arbery’s death, I issued a statement urging Black people and people of color to take seriously their Second Amendment rights. I was urging people who look like me to take seriously shooting, training, and the protection of our rights. I put this statement out because the police cannot always get to you on time, and the world is not a just place. I also released these remarks because we cannot assume that everyone who wears a police uniform is just and fair. The high number of people killed by police (1,099 people were killed by police in 2019) proves my point.
DIY Gun Bans Are Dead On Arrival
From Reason:
The problem with imposing legal restrictions intended to stop a practice that is designed to evade legal restrictions is that you were outflanked before you even started. That’s the challenge for President Joe Biden and lawmakers around the country as they consider limits on “ghost guns”—homemade guns that are created, owned, and used off the government’s radar. Do-it-yourself manufacturing has always hobbled authorities’ ability to control things they don’t like, and the modern ghost gun movement specifically evolved to put personal armaments beyond the reach of the state.
Canadian Gun Law Would Ban Airsoft/BB Guns
From Toronto Sun:
Canadian airsoft enthusiasts are concerned the redefinition of replica firearms under Bill C-21 — the Federal Liberals’ new firearms legislation — could make their air-powered pellet guns prohibited weapons.
“It looks like it’s doomsday for us at this point,†said Frank Chong, owner of Toronto Airsoft, Canada’s largest airsoft retailer.
Minority Of Americans Want More Gun Laws
From Bearing Arms:
Gallup’s headline about their new survey focuses on the fact that a majority of Americans say they’re dissatisfied with our current gun laws, but that doesn’t mean that every one of those respondents wants more gun control. 56% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the status quo, compared to 42% expressing satisfaction, but when Gallup dug a little deeper and asked why folks were dissatisfied, they found out that quite a few of those respondents want to see some or all gun control laws repealed.
Washington Court Rules Safe Storage Law Violates Preemption Law
From Ammoland:
A Washington State Appeals Court panel has unanimously held that a so-called “safe storage†ordinance adopted by the City of Edmonds and challenged by the Second Amendment Foundation, National Rifle Association and three private citizens violates the state’s 36-year-old model preemption law.
Maryland Attacks Private Transfers
From Guns.com:
The expanded background check law prohibits a person from transferring a rifle or shotgun to another individual unless a NICS background check had first taken place. Those found guilty of doing so face as much as six months in prison and a $10,000 fine. Few exceptions to the law, such as for police or military service, or for inoperable guns given to a museum, are allowed.
Second Amendment Foundation Produces Ads From Grassroots Donations
From Guns.com:
In recent weeks, cable news networks have seen a noticeable rise in ads defending the Second Amendment and urging viewers to take action. We can thank Alan Gottlieb and the Second Amendment Foundation’s grassroots fundraising and 2A support efforts for these ads. These 60-second ads, aptly titled “Second Amendment, First Responder,†pull no punches in getting their message across. The Second Amendment is under siege, and Gottlieb intends to do everything in his power to let people know what they can do about it.
Rubio Proposes Anti Gun Bill
From The Federalist:
Individuals, the legislation states, do not have to be guilty for the FBI director and the Joint Terrorism Task Force to be alerted when they attempt to purchase or receive a transferred firearm. The U.S. attorney general is also notified and retains the power to stall the process for up to 10 business days and file an emergency petition to halt the gun procedure until a court can rule on it as long as the individual is notified.
The Reason For The Militia
From American Greatness:
In an obscure but important footnote to the first volume of the Gulag Archipelago, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wonders what would have become of the Soviet terror if the citizens of Russia had armed themselves with hammers, axes, pokers—anything—so that arresting officers of the NKVD would have had to worry whether they would survive each night. The most powerful tyranny in the world could not have stood up against such action. Instead, tens of millions of Russians submitted meekly to the state, one by one. Why?
They’ll Never Stop Going After Guns
From Reason:
A gun control bill that Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D–Texas) recently introduced gives you an idea of what Democrats might do if they did not have to worry about the Second Amendment. The Sabika Sheikh Firearm Licensing and Registration Act would establish a national database that is supposed to include every gun in the country, make it a felony to own a firearm or ammunition without a license from the Justice Department, ban magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and “ammunition that is 0.50 caliber or greater,” and criminalize possession of a “military-style weapon” without a special license. Violating the bill’s provisions would be punishable by hefty fines and long minimum prison sentences, which Lee ordinarily claims to oppose.
